Phoenix Blight was nothing more than a slippery pickpocket, quick and annoying, but just that, a simple target, an easy mission. At least that was Miles Edgesword needed to believe.
Then why was he able to escape from his grasp every single time, people wondered? How was this simple thief able to outsmart the commander himself?
Well, that had a simple answer, really.

A one-shot I wrote inspired by a phrase that wouldn't leave my head - "We inherit the sins of our fathers."; and my realization of how well it fits into Miles Edgeworth; both as a father and as a son.

What kind of Idiot shoots themselves light years into space to escape their problems?
Well, one Phoenix Wright.
---Phoenix Wright is 24 years old when he signs the final line of paperwork, agrees to ship himself off to another planet, lightyears away. He’s grown up hearing about the planet, of course, its mystery capturing the hearts and minds of people around him; it had always felt like a distant fancy, something he could dream about but would never act on.
After all, he had everything he could ever want right here on Earth, right? He’d graduated top of his class, with glowing recommendations and a promising career in xenobiology to look forward to, a loving partner to settle down with - it’d seemed perfect. And for a few months of graduate school, it had been. He’d clawed his way through his degree, struggling to keep a roof over his head and make time to study.
But it was just Phoenix’s luck that once he had found some semblance of balance in his life, things would come crashing right back down on his head once again.
5 years later, Phoenix is still 24 when he takes his first steps on Pandora.

“What the hell was that incantation you spat earlier?” Miles asks.
Phoenix’s lips twitch.
“Limp Bizkit,” he answers. And then he adds, desperate, “Please say it. Please, Miles. For me.”
Miles cringes. But, behold, he parts his lips and delivers a beautiful, beautiful:
“Limp biscuit.”
And the laugh this provides Phoenix carries him all the way into the royal blue sky that stretches across the afternoon, where Truce calls him up and he can finally give her the news. Calm, clinical:
“I’m stuck in the land of shit and honey with Miles Edgeworth. Hold down the fort for me.”

(In Florida for a legal conference, Phoenix and Miles find their flight home cancelled courtesy of a hurricane churning through the panhandle, and thus decide to take a little road trip.)

Summary
After years of legal complications, it's finally time for the reading of Manfred von Karma's final will and testament. In need of some moral support, Edgeworth requests that Phoenix supply his 'consultation services' and accompany him to the von Karma family estate in Germany (despite having been disbarred for two years and just about zero knowledge of inheritance law).
Sure, Phoenix had been expecting to deal with the ensemble of judgey relatives (not literally, thank god), jetlag, crushing homesickness for his daughter, and even von Karma's tragic interior design choices. A whole murder case, however? That he hadn't accounted for. (Which, in retrospect, may have been a bit of an oversight because he and Edgeworth really do seem to be magnets for this kind of thing...)

Summary
Miles never knew his mom. It was always just him and his father, as far back as he could remember. No old photos of his dad with his mom, no wedding photos, nothing. And that was okay. He knew some kids only had one parent. His friend Larry only had his mom, and he never knew his dad. It was normal for them. Miles loved his dad, and he wouldn't have it any other way.
There was a reason there weren’t any photos of a nuclear family in their home. Gregory just didn’t know how to tell him yet. He was almost 10, he was sure he’d understand. It’s not like anything would change if he knew. It was just… difficult to explain to a child. Hell, it was hard to explain to adults. Lord knows how difficult it was to get the doctors to listen to him.
