That should have been that. Bonnet was the boss’s son, which made him Ed’s boss as well, and he should have listened to this little boss’s request. Instead, he stepped forward again, and again, until he was standing right next to the tree that Bonnet leaned on.
From this vantage point, he could see a crumpled batch of stems by Bonnet’s feet. Only a few white petals were still attached.
