Summary
"She's none of your concern anymore, 'Nessa," Galinda says sweetly, and Fiyero reaches for the gimpy straw hat they found when going through Elphie's old room, to hide his scowl at her facade.
"She is my sister—"
"Did you know she was in the Emerald City when you visited. Hiding in the shadows, becoming a fighter of her own, surviving off scraps, or did you stop trying to look for her when you're great-grandfather wisps in your ear of being The Eminent Thropp." It's harsh, and Fiyero lets out a whistle at the scathing remark.
Nessa's face burns at the slight, but she takes a deep breath, showing restraint. "What happened to her? Answer me that at the very least?"
"Death." They say in trade, and Fiyero's hand starts to twitch at the itch beginning to build up on his neck and on the back of his head.
OR
The three buffoons stay in Munchkinland for a bit, and Galinda and Fiyero find out why in-laws suck.

Summary
Galinda chose friends who were a rung below her on the ladder of life and men who were bland and unthreatening; Fiyero had never maintained any relationship for any appreciable length of time, nor a commitment of any sort; and Elphaba - Elphaba had never let herself feel much, not least hope in the goodness of others. And yet here at Shiz, they were inexorably bound to one another, they just didn't know it yet.

Summary
Glinda feels as if she’s died several deaths by now: a piece of her died so that a different Glinda could be born, could be brave and good in a way that the dead part of her never could. She herself lives on, but she has long since killed and buried the Galinda and the Glinda of her youth. This is, of course, metaphorical.
It’s not quite as metaphorical for Fiyero.
(Five times they talk about death and one time all three decide to live in the moment.)
