Summary
Bucky is... free. Or at least, he's free enough to know that there's a life outside of Hydra. His body is free, able to roam the cities that he finds himself in and warm his hands by their fires.
His mind is not. The flashbacks follow him wherever he goes, whispering in his ears and gripping his lungs with the control that they'd had in the moment they'd taken place.
Then the Hydra agents start appearing, eager to take back their prized asset. They're living reminders of the life he's trying to run from, and they're just as desperate as him to succeed. The Winter Soldier is their most effective weapon, after all, and it wouldn't do to simply let it run wild after decades of meticulous conditioning.
It's hard to adjust to a life of normalcy when his past keeps showing up at his front door.
The soldier with blond hair who turns up only makes it worse.

“No,” Her voice was firm. “No, Tony. You act like a bad person so people won’t feel so guilty for treating you like shit. That doesn’t make you a bad person. That just makes you a human.”

Chapt 4 actually goated fic
I love "What If?" Stuff like this, and it's written absolutely beautifully. Each chapter is pretty long so major respect to the author. Also the different sections are laid out beautifully.
