Summary
Bruce is a mess when Tim first shows up. He's ruthless and relentless. Certainly not the Batman that Tim knows. So, Tim decides to step in. He'll become Robin. He won't replace Jason. That's something he knows he'll never be able to do. But he'll fulfill the need for a Robin.
Tim knows he's nothing more than a placeholder. Still, he wishes that Batman would accept him. He wishes Bruce would accept him. He can dream. He does dream. But he always wakes up. And he wakes up to a Batman that wants his son back.
Or: Tim fulfills the need for a Robin and takes the brunt of Batman at his worse. Later down the line, Bruce wonders if he'll ever be able to fix the damage he's done to Timothy Drake.

Dick jumps when Jason shouts. He's heard Jason yell before. But never in his life has Dick heard Jason yell like this.
"Firm. Firm? You think Bruce needs to be more firm with him? You have no fucking idea what you're talking about. He was. He was too firm. And now, now Tim's leg is fucked up and probably so many other things. There is a reason he doesn't train with us. There's a reason he doesn't go on patrol anymore. He's not ready. I don't know if he'll ever be ready."

Tim is five years old when he drowns in his parents' pool. He dies quietly, waiting for parents who love him, but will never be there, to realise that something is wrong. They never show up, and he sinks into oblivion.
When he wakes up and claws his way out of the water, the sun has set, and the lights of his house are on. He is cold and wet and his lungs burn.
But most of all, Tim is alone.
