Only Sphinx had ever been allowed down in the room below the basement – and she’d made it clear: nobody else was to enter. At first, she went for just a few nights a week, carrying an assortment of odd things. One night a fish, another a bottle, another time a loaf of bread. She’d often vanish for hours at a time, then reappear, muttering under her breath, eyes glossy and unfocused. But hours turned into days, then weeks, then months. Her bed upstairs had gathered dust. Her chest had been emptied out. Whatever she was doing deep underground, she had committed to wholly, and without explanation. Everyone had assumed she’d moved in permanently, that she found something worth staying down there for...
...but what if whatever was down there wasn't worth it at all?
Friends go missing, parasites multiply every day, and reaching the moon seems nigh impossible as the timer slowly ticks to zero.
