It is odd, to think of the time before — mostly due to the fact that before has blended together with after so thoroughly that Miles catches himself thinking through past events on the presumption that they had been then where they are now. Perhaps it is because his memory is worse than Miles allows himself to admit. Perhaps it is because, in some unspoken, unacknowledged way, they had been.
