Summary
Leaves and sticks crunched beneath Mike and Will’s shoes as they walked—both in uncomfortable silence for a pair of supposedly “best friends.” Given that they had been in forced proximity for over a year, you’d expect that they would take the chance to rebuild their bond, but it seemed that the avoidance continued on.
Though this time, it wasn’t Mike avoiding Will. Will was avoiding Mike. And this didn’t go unnoticed by Mike.
What also didn’t go unnoticed were Will’s eyes being on Lucas more than they were on Mike.

Then Mike slides his hand, gripping the back of Will’s neck by straightening his fingers and pressing his palm down onto the skin. Will swallows, lowering his head. Their foreheads nearly touch. The warmth of Mike’s hand grants him a sensory relief he could barely process.
Mike swiftly slips an arm under Will’s and pulls him close, the other hand that rested on Will’s neck glides up through his soft hair, bringing his head to his chest. “I’m sorry it always has to be you, Will.”
“You’ve been through so much. But I’m going to fix this. I’ll make you feel safe, okay?”
Will doesn’t even realize he’s crying until he feels the wetness of the fabric on Mike’s shirt where his cheek is pressed. He sniffles, laughing breathlessly through his tears, and nods his head into Mike’s shoulder, tightening the embrace for a little longer.
