Two years after Vecna finally met his end, the Party moves onto College. Trauma-bonding has it's positives, and all six members of their party stick together through the transition.
Now, how did he get here, Will Byers wonders. Never in his life would he imagine walking into his and Mike’s shared apartment with his best friend in the lap of another person.
At first, Will just assumed that Mike and his hookup came back to the apartment for the first time ever, and the girl liked having scrawny boys in her lap. He’s not one to assume, okay?! Just because he’s gay, doesn’t mean he can judge heterosexuals!
He would have brushed it off and snuck back out the door, but as he turned to leave- their cat meowed loudly and rubbed against his legs, disrupting Mike and his chair.
Will looked up, prepared to introduce himself to the girl and apologize to his best friend, when there was definitely not a girl there.
In fact- the opposite of a girl was bracing Mike firmly around his thighs and waist. A bulky brunet glared at him from underneath the curly-haired boy, clearly unhappy at being disturbed.

Mike Wheeler and Will Byers have spent years orbiting each other, close enough to feel everything, too scared to say anything. When a mix-up at school causes Will's sketchbook and Mike's journal to get swapped, each boy suddenly holds something deeply personal: pages filled with late-night thoughts, half-finished confessions, and words they never meant the other to see.
Will finds writings about himself in Mike's margins, pieces of stories where the hero always has brown eyes, and a running list titled "Things I Should Tell Will Someday." Mike discovers drawings of him hidden between landscapes, quiet entries about missing home, and a note that Will wrote but never delivered: "I wish you knew how much you matter to me."
Both boys panic, do they pretend nothing happened? Return the books untouched? Confront the truth? But the more they read, the more they realize the feelings they've been burying aren't one-sided.

He disappeared after the fire, never to be seen again. I think…” Eddie hesitated, swallowing. “I think he followed his lover not long after.”
Steve looked back up at the careful brushstrokes and meticulous detail, his heart plummeting down deep and his eyes welling up against his will, unable to stop thinking of the despair the painter must have felt, the despair Steve himself felt that the painter thought there was no way forward after such a loss.
“Oh, sweetheart.” Eddie whispered to him, gently thumbing away at the tears on Steve’s cheeks. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you.”
Steve shook his head, eyes down and tried his best to fight off the urge to throw himself into the arms of this stranger who he had just met, this man who he felt an inexplicable and borderline compulsive need to be closer to, to hold tight to him and be assured that he was alive and well.

The thing was wrecked at the edges, with a missing keypad and the wire completely torn. Looking at it in his mother’s hands, Mike could see the odd shape of the wire, bent at uncanny angles where it should have been a smooth rope of curls. Because his teeth had sunk into the chewy plastic.

Sometimes… you just need someone to go to for other things. He’s still your best friend, Wheeler.”
