Summary
By circumstances entirely beyond her control, Dorothy Gale lands in Oz. She's told she's killed a wicked witch. She has magical shoes on her feet that she cannot remove. Her only hope of returning home is to walk for many miles along a yellow brick road, a simple instruction if not incredibly vague. Nothing is fine, but Dorothy straightens her shoulders and pretends for a moment that this is just a normal day with normal happenstances.
She is alone until she meets the Scarecrow. He is her first friend in Oz. She cherishes him all the more for that.

"Dorothy was very talkative and told Fiyero all about Kansas. He was glad to just listen, he wasn’t sure what he would tell her about if she asked. Dorothy seemed to latch onto Fiyero (or “Scarecrow” as she liked to call him), never wanting to be more than a couple feet away from him at any time. Fiyero didn’t mind, he also quite liked the girl.
What Fiyero did mind however was Dorothy’s dog."
