“I suppose today is as good a day as any to bring it up—what your plan is, I mean.”
“Currently? Finish baking John’s cake.” Sherlock answered flatly. He knew, of course, what Mycroft was implying—he’d had the good graces not to bring it up for the past three years, but apparently that kindness had been spent.
“You know that’s not what I mean, Sherlock.” He said gravely. A touch of heartbreak in his voice that hit dead center in Sherlock’s chest. A shared pain, a twisted sort of companionship.
“When he dies, Sherlock.” Mycroft breathed, as if the words stung on the way out. They wounded Sherlock anyway, that was for sure. “Fifty years if we’re—if you’re—lucky. What then?”
Sherlock sighed tightly, trying to pretend he wasn’t being gutted; like he wasn’t bleeding his heart out over the counter, the sugar, the flour…
“I don’t know.”
