Summary

All dwarves are assumed to be Male until they get married where their actual gender is determined by what they bring to the marriage.
Husbands teach children all the basic life skills: cooking, cleaning, weapons training, basic metalworking, reading, writing, math, ect.
Wives provide for the children: toys, weapons, home, food, apprenticeships, money, social/political connections, ect.
Obviously there is some overlap, especially if one is weak in one area or another. Like, you don't want your husband to teach your kids how to cook if he burns water.
Bofur gets married and Surprise! He's a female.
