Lucy conceded, softening. “Yeah, I know. And I love you for being the sarcastic weirdo Beethoven freak you are. But I also want to see you get out there and experience this city. Like, did you know that there’s a jazz bar in Midtown that’s also a library! There’s a flower shop in Soho that turns into a fortune teller’s booth by night! There’s a record shop three blocks away that has a sleepy cat that lies in between the Rock and Indie section. There’s a whole world out there, Schroeder!”

"You know how the two of you get; it's like lighting up a cannister of greek fire to stop an exploding building. No, I'll talk to her."

“It’s just that I think that it’s impossible for posh boys like you and working class people like me to be friends,” she said, feeling the need to explain.
Lockwood turned his dark eyes to her and Lucy fought to keep her own eyes on the road ahead. Just a few more blocks, she chanted like a mantra. “And why is that?”
“Something always gets in the way, whether you notice it or not. And most of the time, people like you don’t notice it. It’s these simple gestures and comments that always remind you of how different you are. It’ll be some random discussion over how to split the check, or an invitation to somewhere that you can’t in a million years afford. It never seems to matter to posh people, but it does to me.”
“So you don’t think we can be friends?” Asked Lockwood, a furrow in his brow, his head tilted at an adorable angle.

“What?” I frowned.
“That’s your name, is it? What a lovely name. It feels right,” Lockwood smiled softly at me and he reached out and took my hand.
I could feel my face flaming, as George and Flo looked on in bewilderment.
“Right. Well. Thank you,” I offered back, a little awkwardly.
Lockwood leaned in toward me, to do god knows what. He tucked a lock of hair behind my ear.
My heart was hammering in my chest, my mouth was as dry as the Sahara, as his face came even closer to mine.
What the hell was he doing?
George and Flo’s eyes were on stalks. I felt like we were all holding a collective breath.

Summary
