Ragh Barkrock had what you could consider an interesting spring break, which was in part thanks to the whole "accidentally stumbling into a conspiracy that almost killed his mom, getting possessed to kill his friends, and helping reform a corrupted goddex" thing. But also, he was accidentally a little forward with his feelings about two of his best friends, and he hasn't had the time to really confront that until now. And what better time to confront your feelings than while watching them spar each other?

If Maxwell hadn’t noticed the strange, small mark on the deed to the MacLeod farm, if he hadn’t gotten his brother to help convince the staff to take the Zephyr instead of one of the Karakamachi blimps, if he hadn’t managed to make a connection with Olethra—
Well. He certainly wouldn’t be here right now, feeling the cold air gust against his face as the Zephyr rides through the skies, headed for the junkheap land of Scrapsylvania. He wouldn’t be feeling his heart pulse with an unfettered panic, his nerves constantly on edge the longer he stays away from the safety and certainty of the ground below. He wouldn’t be caught in the strange struggle of meeting his idols — of Daisuke Bucklesby, first and foremost, and from the route they’re headed to, perhaps the others as well.
But Maxwell also thinks that if he hadn’t managed to do all of those things… well, maybe he wouldn’t really be living at all.

Fabian pauses to look up at Goldenhoard, stopped in time. The balloon arch behind them is maybe a little trite, but it’s also maybe a little sweet. He’s never been to a school dance before, homeschooled as he was on his father's ship, and a part of him wonders if this is supposed to be a shared experience every high schooler has.
“It’s too bad we aren’t here to actually enjoy prom,” Fabian says. “Didn’t even have the time to dance or anything.”
“Do you… want to dance?” Gorgug asks, hesitantly.
Near the end of freshman year, in the shadow of a dragon paused mid-battle thanks to some miraculous chronomancy, Fabian and Gorgug slow dance at prom.
It still takes the better part of a decade for them to start dating.

Kristen remains frozen, arms held out in front of her loosely. She looks like she wants to dig—her fingertips move, nervously twitching—but she doesn’t touch the earth. She doesn’t even blink as the words wash over her.
