Summary
John Bender was wearing her earring.
There he was, right down the hall, surrounded by friends in varying states of delinquency. Very much not squatting behind the school, where they liked to kill time and light matches. Very much not getting high out the back exit, where Vice Principal Richard Vernon liked to stack whatever busted-up chairs could no longer fit in the basement. His friends looked on edge, out of place, given wide berths by everyone who passed. He alone was unbothered. Casual. Hands in his pockets, talking shit, kicking lockers. Not that she’d ever noticed — she hadn’t even known his name before Saturday. As far as she had ever been concerned, he was just one of the burners. The worst of them. The nameless boy with dark eyes and a mouth so filthy he could have spit mud.
And really, the nameless boy with dark eyes and a filthy mouth looked no different than usual. Except, of course, for the tiny diamond glittering in his left ear.

Summary
She and Jacob were whispering conspiratorially to each other, their heads bowed, and it was driving me insane. How could I have felt such a powerful claim over some stranger who, up until an hour ago, I wouldn’t have given two shits about? How was it that everyone around me continued to exist, completely oblivious to the universe condensing itself into the gaze of a thin, somber girl?
I felt angry, helpless, like the tide: always fighting to draw away from the sand, always fated to crash back against the shore. Over and over and over.
