“Have you considered the possibility that Neil has chosen you, but believes you have not chosen him?” Renee says. "Have you ever explicitly told him what you want?”
“Neil knows what I want,” Andrew snaps. This is not Andrew’s fault.
“How do you know?”
Because Neil always knows. He is as fluent in Andrew’s micro-expressions as he is in German and French. He knows which head tilts mean “go on” and which ones mean “shut up.” Without ever asking, he learned what it meant to see Andrew wearing double layers of long sleeves, or taking multiple showers in a day, and learned to hand Andrew the car keys.
That has always been the most terrifying thing about Neil — his patience to wait, watch, listen, learn. The prospect that if Neil were given enough time, there would be no part of Andrew that was just Andrew’s anymore.
“He has to know,” Andrew says.
“Does he?” Renee says. “Have you ever known Neil to assume that he is wanted?”
Five times Neil tells someone that he and Andrew aren’t dating, and one time Andrew uses his words to set the record straight.

“You said it’s shit.”
“I did.” Andrew agrees.
“You said it isn’t a permanent fix.”
“It’s not.”
Andrew reaches through the window, plucks the tree shaped air freshener off the rearview mirror, holds it to his nose. Neil waits, knows that it lost its scent months ago. He isn’t sure why he’s held on to it, just knows he likes the look of it dangling while he drives. It’s another identifiable feature to his car, another way to know Neil Josten drove this Subaru.
His mother would have hit him before throwing it away.
Andrew places the scentless piece of cardboard back in its spot with a delicacy that indicates understanding. A gentleness that makes Neil wonder if Andrew Minyard, with his family and his fancy sports car and his leather jacket, is also learning how to be a real person.
“I can fix it.” Andrew says, and for the first time since he came upon Neil and his unresponsive engine, he looks away.
“You can fix it,” Neil echoes, a question and a statement in one.
“Yes.” Andrew replies.

Neil’s car breaks down. Cue the cute blonde with a knowledge of cars, a cool leather jacket, and a long term crush on the helpless redhead. -

“Neither of you are subtle,” Aaron groans. “The whole school is waiting for you to bang already.”
“I don’t want to bang him, Aaron,” Andrew snaps. “I want to take him on dates and hold his stupid hand and then bang him. Longterm. Monogamously. I want to be his boyfriend, I want him to be my boyfriend. I want to one day be Mr. Andrew Minyard-Dobson-Josten.”

Andrew Minyard hates his job. Andrew especially hates the pretty boy with stupid auburn hair and stupid blue eyes that comes into the library every day.
