“Most favorite?” Colin whips back to see her in exaggerated disbelief. “Pray tell, are there others who rejoice in your favoritism?”
None. Not now, not ever, she thinks. Only the two boys in front of her are most favored in her heart’s mind.
Still, she cannot help her deviousness peeking through when she nonchalantly replies—
“A woman has her secrets.”
Turns out, Penelope can also be humorous and cheeky in the small hours of the night.
“Well played, Mrs. Bridgerton. I will never be able to say no to you, will I?”
“Thought you’d be used to that by now.” She retorts with a grin, unabashedly self-satisfied with her win.

Penelope’s heart tenses in quick defense but she promptly realizes his tone isn't accusatory or pointed, but rather even toned. It’s a vague question, one she wasn’t expecting out of his mouth tonight, but one she had expected to receive again for some time, at least since the night before their wedding.

“Mr Bridgerton? Colin?”
He almost did not recognise her. She looked very different — pretty red curls bobbed fashionably; cheeks and lips stained with a little rouge; a day dress in a lovely mauve colour that made her eyes seem bluer, somehow — but it was her scent that threw him off. Now that he thought about it, he could not quite recall what Penelope Featherington actually smelled like (he had not seen her in years, after all). She was so often at Bridgerton House that all he could summon was the same lilac smell that his mother and his siblings bore, but of course there must be other notes he was forgetting.
Still, he was fairly certain she had never smelled like this: vetiver and geranium, sharp and green and floral.
Not a bad smell by any means — just not Penelope’s. Even though he could not recall her scent, he knew certainly this was not it. She must be wearing perfume. It befuddled him so much that he realised he had been staring at her silently for a lot longer than was polite, especially for an old family friend he had not seen in ages.

Summary
Violet Bridgerton has had enough of her three eldest sons refusing to engage with the marriage mart. She has seen her daughters Daphne and Francesca married in the last four seasons but she wants more grandchildren and she wants them now.
And so, in the week before the whole family and ton are due to descend on Aubrey Hall for the annual Hearts and Flowers Ball, Lady Violet has invited a select group of eligible ladies to the Hall to participate in a series of challenges where the ultimate prize is up for grabs: marriage to one of the three oldest Bridgerton brothers. Penelope Featherington is on her fourth year on the mart with no prospects.

Whistledown exists, Colin didn’t make any foolish declarations in the Featherington gardens, Penelope and Eloise are grand. Prudence is still unmarried. This started out as a purely crack fic but I accidentally kept adding plot and making myself cry. There is still quite a lot of crack though. If you crave period accuracy, sorry. I researched some bits with fervour and then hugged an anachronism or two for the giggles.
