    Lu Guang isn’t surprised by the figure that undoes his blindfold— Vein’s voice and the sound of his killing are imprinted into his mind, unmistakable. Blood and bodies are scattered across the concrete floor. The fluorescents of the warehouse’s light are too-sharp too-quick. Vein’s hair is a bright scarlet tied in a braid down his neck; his eyes are a wild-eyed brightness as he begins to say something.

    He can’t hear the words. There’s sounds overlapping it, timelines mixing together in his brain. There’s Cheng Xiaoshi with a bullet hole in his chest, smiling at him.

    When Lu Guang vomits over the floor, it’s heaving and uncontrollable, as if a memory is forcing itself out his throat. Vein dodges the mess in a single, fluid step and looks at him.
