Summary
“Yes, George had been her best friend. But John Pruitt was always the man whom Mildred recalled with romantic love, passion, with the agonizing yearning that came with having a soulmate it was forbidden to touch. George had viewed her nude body, as had John, but it was only John who had seen straight into her naked soul in ways that George had never been privy to.
Though only Mildred Gunning had ever seen John’s beautiful unclothed body. His own soul stripped bare, fervent and frangible before her.”
Alternatively: What if Mildred and John had more time to reflect on their lives together before the events of the Easter vigil?

Summary
“God will forgive our trespasses. We are only human, after all. Every impulse that we strive to strangle broods in the mind and poisons us.”
It was a familiar line, but you could not place it. “That is definitely not a Bible verse.”
“In other words, the only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. Resist it, and your soul grows sick with longing for the things it has forbidden to itself.”
A lightbulb flashed in your mind. “You’re taking moral guidance from Oscar Wilde, of all people?”
“He suggested we should seek out everything morality forces us to renounce in order to observe what we think and feel about it.”

Summary
In truth, as the days went by, Mildred thought of her husband less and less and of Father Pruitt more and more. It wasn’t that she didn’t love George, she was just becoming increasingly aware that maybe she didn’t love him in the right way - not the way she was beginning to fall in love with John.
