Summary
The town of Warsaw lies in the most remote part of northern Scotland at the coldest and farthest point from the familiar world possible. It boasts of a population in the hundreds supported by little: a grocery, a bar, a smattering of houses. Teetering on the edge of this town, held above the rocky cliffs, is a lighthouse which is home to its keeper, Kieren Walker, a solitary man few of the locals know. They whisper about him among themselves, saying that he hates company, that he's an outlaw, that he's just plain weird. Despite this chatter, every night the beacon hums to life and casts an orange glow across the choppy waters of the bay. Every day the man can be seen working inside it to keep it running. And every dawn he can be found slumped over a pint at the bar, fending off memories of a past that haunts him.

“So, hey,” he says. “What the fuck are you doing here?”
Patrick stares down into the bottom of his highball glass with a wry twist of the lips.
“Friend of mine’s getting married,” he says, and makes no effort at all to hide the bitterness. He lets it seep right through everything like red wine on white carpet, like the smell of sex on fresh sheets. “Figured I’d come pay my respects.”
“That’s for funerals.”
“I know what I said.”
