Summary
Todd could feel his heartbeat in his head. He'd always been sort of outwardly nervous, terrible at hiding it, concealing it, pushing it down. He knew Neil and the others must have noticed and cursed himself for not being more subtle. They didn't seem too bad—a little confrontational for Todd's taste—but not rude, not going out of their way to exclude him. They still made him nervous, though. They knew of Jeffrey's excellence and could see plain as day that Todd was far from being like his brother.

Todd's life was spent up until Welton in hand-me-downs, a collection of clothing passed down from Jeffery, a hapless reminder of his inadequacy in his parents' eyes. Consequently, it was unusual for him to wear clothing that smelled like him; it was always Jeffery's cheap spray or his father's pricey cologne wafting around him like the warm hugs he wasn't used to receiving.
