The waitress let out a deep breath, washing Vash in stale gum and coffee creamer. “You’re gonna have to order something if you’re sittin’ here.”
Vash sat up straighter and finally pulled himself out of the weird stretch he was in. “I don’t have any money,” he admitted, looking at her with big green eyes that could pay all his bills if the world was just. The waitress, meanwhile, was neck-deep into a nine hour shift.
There was the gentle creak of wood when Vash came up the steps, and the smell of gunpowder and metal and something else that always came with men like him; men who stole everything in a room without committing a single crime and men who ripped upheaval across every civilization they touched, not a drop of blood spilled. Cricketsong was at his back and a warm breeze squeezed past him and into the library, twinning around the shelves and rustling papers like excited children at the end of summer.
