When a seemingly-rehabilitated Dr. Quinzel opens an upscale retreat for couples in crisis, Batman needs to investigate. An undercover mission as Bruce Wayne and partner should do the trick. Unfortunately, his first choice for the mission is unavailable. As is his second. And his third. And -
“What’s more important?” Dick challenges. “Your considerations - or the lives of the people who may be endangered by a delay in getting the truth about Happy Acres?”
Bruce opens his mouth, and then closes it again. He knows the answer to that. He believes the answer to that. He just - he can’t even form the thought. Logically he knows what Dick is suggesting, but it won’t even compute. He has spent too long preventing his mind from ever considering Dick and romance at the same time.
Dick, who doesn’t have Bruce’s feelings, also doesn’t have Bruce’s difficulties. “That’s what I thought,” he says. Despite his victory, he somehow sounds weary. “So get over yourself, and hand me the damn pocket square. I’m your date tonight, and you’d better start getting used to it.”

"So, uh…” he waves a hand vaguely. “Who’s the lucky lady? Or gent?”Bruce stares at him. “What.”
Dick’s little laugh and aborted hand-rubbing-the-back-of-his-head motion are telltale signs of anxiety. “The romantic partner, Bruce. The one you have staying over tonight?”
“The romantic - did Alfred tell you?” Bruce hadn’t mentioned this particular mission to Dick, for very good and logical reasons. Reasons so good and so logical that he had had no need to enumerate them to himself at any time. He had merely discarded the idea of telling Dick anything without even needing to think about it, and then forgotten it entirely. Of course, this had been a carefully considered and rational decision, like all of Batman’s decisions, and so there is no reason for Alfred to have mentioned anything, either.

They move in glorious unison, the years of practice fighting crime together translating now into precision and grace on the dance floor. In his impassioned speech to Bruce upstairs, Dick had invoked the perfection of their vigilante partnership, but that isn’t the whole story, is it? Robin may indeed be Batman’s perfect partner; he could hardly be otherwise, having shaped himself into that form over years. But they’ve never tried to find out what Dick Grayson and Bruce Wayne are like now that Robin has grown up into Nightwing. Their official relationship of guardian and ward had been undermined from the moment Dick had put on the Robin suit, but they’d never redefined that, either. Not that Dick hadn’t wanted to. Desperately. But before Bruce could see Dick as an equal, he’d had to make Batman see Nightwing as one, and the process of breaking away as a vigilante had been so fraught that he’d only just started to feel like he could start to make progress on un-breaking the relationship between Dick Grayson and Bruce Wayne. -
