These statues were made by the Kingdom of Benin, in what is now Nigeria, through the lost-wax casting method--out of brass, though they're famously known as bronzes. They were largely stolen by colonial powers and many are still in foreign hands. They are the likenesses of the kings and queens of Benin, dating from between 1550 to 1750.
