“I can’t lose you,” he whispered.
Charlie froze.
“I can’t.” Nick was crying again, hot tears running down his cheeks. “If something had happened to you tonight - if I was too late-” his voice teetered off into a pained whine, physically unable to finish his sentence.
“Nick,” Charlie breathed, a heartbroken expression on his face. “You didn’t lose me.”
Nick shook his head. “But I almost did. And I can’t - I won’t go through life without you. I love you far too much to do it on my own.”
Charlie’s breath caught as he stared at Nick with wide eyes.
“I love you,” Nick repeated, his voice hardly above a whisper. It was the first time that he’d ever said it out loud. Unable to keep it a secret anymore, not when it had been so close to Nick and Charlie becoming just Nick. “And I know I’ve waited too long to say it and I've ruined everything. I don’t expect anything from you, I just - I need you to know. My life has been so much better since you’ve been in it. You’re my favourite person, Charlie.”
“How - how long?” Charlie choked out. He was looking at Nick like he had two heads. “Nick, please. How long?”

The physical part was easy. Whatever it was, whatever force that his family was tapped into, it was hungry. And it liked flesh and blood and bone and all those other little pieces that made humans humans, but not in a particularly scary way. It wasn’t like George was still using his baby teeth for anything else, anyway. And for most things, that was all it took. A small pearly tooth or two, tucked into a pile of dirt or a few drops of blood from a needle pricking his fingers, and they bloomed into a musty black flower that twisted around his wrist when he reached out to touch its petals. It left stains, like oil, on his fingers, and it only lived as long as it took for whatever he asked for to be fulfilled. A small sacrifice, for a tiny bit of good fortune or protection.

It was strange, really. Charlie hadn’t known Nick for long, and yet, whenever he saw Nick come into the library he felt drawn to him. He remembered the first time that he noticed Nick in the library, situated on what would become his regular couch. At first, Charlie didn’t think much of it, obviously students would make use of the library as a quiet study space, and Nick was no exception. But somewhere along the way, Charlie found himself going out of his way to sneak looks more often than not.
Charlie couldn’t help but notice him.
The way that his fringe would flop into his eyes as he scribbled away at his notes, or how his nose would scrunch up when he was working his way through a difficult passage of text. Or how the corner of his mouth would tilt up in a grin when he started greeting Charlie on his way in. Maybe he imagined it, but it seemed like every time Charlie responded with his own grin and quiet, “hi,” that Nick’s eyes would brighten.
