“My dream?” Xie Lian fidgeted with his fingers, trying to not melt under the watchful gaze of San Lang. “I think since I was a kid, all I wanted to do was save others. Or help, if not save.” He tried to meet San Lang’s eyes. “I know I don’t really have a plan for how I’m going to do this, but… I want to try. I want to help people.”
The lecture hall was silent. Not even a whisper. All Xie Lian could hear in his ears was his pounding heartbeat, all he could feel was his nervous, sweat-slicked hands. This was embarrassing, being so vulnerable.
Yet San Lang grinned so big and said so softly as if Xie Lian was the only one supposed to hear, “What a wonderful dream.”
In which a lost, lonely boy finds solace in an unexpected and loving mentor.
