He'd told Gina to be at his at midday, and he knew she wouldn't be late. If anything, she'd arrive early, ever punctual and prepared.
Ricky raced through the shower, almost slipping on the bathroom tiles in the process, and 'cleaned' his room faster than he thought was possible. He threw on the cleanest pair of jeans that he could find, and a hoodie of his that he knew Gina loved. (She'd likely end up going home in it.)
At eleven fifty-five, the doorbell rang. Within seconds, he was at the door.

Hearing the words, it felt like giving up. It felt like the moment the world grew cold and still around him, his body sinking to a place where the midday sun could not reach. His mother tried to reach for him, as he stood hastily from his chair.

His bedroom door was soon slammed behind him, the key turned firmly in the lock. Colin let the bed take the weight of his bones, wishing that it could take the weight of his broken heart. He laid there in pieces for the entire night. As his cheeks grew damp with tears, he thought of the life that he gambled away and the future he had lost because he waited too long.
