His eyes flick back to Derek flipping through Slaughterhouse-Five. He used to have more prominent calluses on his palms, but they softened a bit thanks to a jasmine-scented hand cream Penelope gifted him. Yet something else catches his eye. There’s a small scar underneath his right middle knuckle. It’s usually not even notable, but sometimes he’ll be close enough to see the faint mark. He wonders how it got there in the first place. Derek's had it ever since Spencer joined the BAU, and it’s far too small to be from an unsub’s knife. Was it from a scab he couldn’t stop picking years ago?
Part of him wants to reach out and touch it. The same part that itches to cover Derek’s hand and twin their fingers together on the plane after a strenuous case. It longs to grip his hand tightly but not to the point of discomfort—just to be grounding enough to say we’re here, we’re here, we’re here.
For every academic article he’s read, he’s not sure what to do with how much he craves that.
Or, a bookstore visit tips Spencer’s feelings about Derek a little further off their axis.

He barely even thinks about that night—Sam’s hands all over him, his mouth doing the things it did to Bucky’s body, the way he looks when he comes. Hardly ever does he think about it. He’s fine. He’s been fine.
He convinces himself very thoroughly of this for a very long time until his work tablet beeps one afternoon in the middle of him watching Days of Our Lives, season 99, episode 5901, in yesterday’s pajamas, halfway to the bottom of a Cheetos bag.
