When in 1684 Lady Jean Cochrane married John Graham, then 7th Laird of Claverhouse, her Convenanter family were Presbyterian rebels and he one of the King's Sheriffs in Scotland. By 1689, after the overthrow of King James VII, he was a Jacobite rebel and she had fortified his house at Glen Ogilvie against King William's armies in Scotland. Rebellion divided clan and family, set HIghland Scot against Lowland Scot, and echoes to this day in the empty glens and military roads of Scotland. But, loyal and loving, through joys and sorrows, Lady Jean's companion Mistress Darklis Ruthven was by her side.
