It is someone his type, it turns out - not that he would ever admit that to Toshiya. The man, with his bleached, tousled hair and dark, swirling tattoos, reminds him of the myriad dalliances he's had with bar patrons in the past - though he's promised himself recently not to mix work and pleasure.
What sets this customer apart isn't his appearance, though - it's the fact that his nose is buried in a book.
Die blinks. He's worked at the bar long enough to know the kind of patron it attracts: someone who's looking for cheap beer, loud music, or a lover to entertain for the night. He's never seen someone choose the seat next to the speakers and read.

Before Die can disappear inside the building, however, Kyo calls out his name. "Wait," he adds, fumbling with his lapel. After a moment, he flips one of his buttons to Die like a coin. Die catches it without thinking, hissing as the pin pricks his palm. He stares down at it. Six swords, and a bead of blood welling up beneath them.
"Maybe I'll see you around sometime," Kyo says.
Breathing deep, Die says, "I'd like that."

Summary
Die stepped over the familiar threshold into the comfortably dim establishment, breathing in the scents of spice and incense and old, weathered pages. Tall shelves stood on either side of him, lined haphazardly with jars and bottles, crystals and talismans, but Die passed them by without really looking, moving through the almost maze-like aisles until he reached the front counter.
There, he stopped dead, because standing at the counter was not the shop-owner, his friend, but a total stranger—perhaps the only unfamiliar thing in the shop.
