Summary
It is sometimes difficult to tell the difference between a good idea and one that has been considered so thoroughly it has become like the divot in the marble steps of an old building: treacherous in its well-worn, unassuming way. This may be, if not the sibling, then certainly the cousin of compulsion, an idea with its jagged edges erased under the relentless consideration of the thinker like a stone at the bottom of a river worn smooth. A stone can, of course, break a glass window regardless of its shape.
“I require your assistance in the conduction of an experiment,” was all Laszlo needed to say to John over the ’phone. John’s voice sounded metallic and far-away when he consented to come to 17th Street despite the lateness of the hour. So Laszlo waited, uncharacteristically nervous, in the front parlor, pacing between the settee and the fireplace, turning over and over again the idea in his head until it seemed not just logical but inexorable, the obvious solution to the present conundrum.

Summary
Laszlo was the first to speak up again.
“I haven’t been myself lately.”
John swallowed.
“I know,” he said softly. “You aren’t nearly as good at hiding things as you think.”
Laszlo made a low noise that might’ve been a chuckle, though John didn’t know what he’d found amusing.
“Perhaps. Though if I’m being quite honest, you wouldn’t know the half of it, my friend.”
A snowfall prevents John from travelling home late at night; Laszlo offers him someplace warm.

“A bath?” Zuko says, squinting at the full tub.
Sokka rolls his eyes again. “Yeah, clearly, a bath. You’re all stressy. We’ve got a few hours before anyone gets back, so I figured you could relax a bit.”
“It’s not even noon.”
“Your point?”
“It’s too early for a bath.”
“Bullshit. It’s a holiday and we’re on vacation. Day baths are a luxury, just enjoy it. Look, I’ve got some tea and some of those fancy salts you like on the side.”
Zuko opens his mouth but Sokka says quickly, “Yes, unscented. There will be no rashes on our vacation. Your phone’s here, too.”
Seemingly out of viable arguments, Zuko snaps his mouth shut and settles for glaring at the water as if it has personally offended him. Sokka gives him a moment, trying to suppress the grin tugging at the corners of his mouth, then nudges Zuko forward with a hand on the small of his back.
“Zuko?”
“Hmm?”
“Get in the goddamn tub.”

Summary
Zuko doesn’t have time to deal with pressure for an arranged marriage, especially since he isn’t even sure he likes women that way. (A realisation that has absolutely nothing to do with Ambassador Sokka - shut up, Suki.) Katara and Aang have broken up again, and the Northern Water Tribe are pushing for a match between the North and South.
Which leads Zuko and Katara to develop a genius, foolproof, only slightly drunken plan: they can pretend to date for the length of Katara’s stay in the palace, giving them both a brief reprieve from political pressures on their love lives.
