Luna squirms when arriving at school on Monday. With the college fair now exposed and everything, it isn’t surprising that their grade is directed into the gymnasium for an announcement, but that’s the last thing on her mind. She’s more focused on the fact that one of her best friends might as well hate her.
There is also the crushing weight of what Alexy said about Lysander. She doesn’t know if it’s true or if he just said it for the sake of stirring the pot, but she has been feeling nauseous all morning.
She doesn’t know where to go from here, so she might as well head to the gym to find Rosalya.
She’s already there in the big crowd of their classmates and others, and Luna tries to dart through the people without paying any mind to Lysander and Castiel, who are quietly chatting close to the doors, or Armin and Alexy, who are standing together, or Kim and Nathaniel, who are standing just far apart enough not to attract any attention.
“There you are!” Rosalya says when Luna finally finds her way to her. “I almost thought I’d never see you again after the carnival!”
“Yeah, I’m sorry about that,” she mumbles, fiddling with her sleeves. “I guess I’m more of a lightweight than I thought.”
“Oh, that’s gonna be fixed! That college fair night at the hotel is going to be crazy!” Rosalya beams. “I already talked to Castiel and he said we could throw a little party.”
“...Really? Rosa—”
“We don’t get chances like this every day, Luna!”
“...Lately it kind of feels like we do.”
“Well… yeah, maybe, but shouldn’t we have the most fun we can have while we’re still young and pretty?” she asks. “One day you’re going to be old and married to Lysander or Armin and think ‘damn, why didn’t I get wasted that one night after the college fair?’ and then you’re going to be super sad.”
Luna can’t help but giggle despite the ache deep in her chest. The teachers then walk to the front of the gym and ask for everyone’s attention.
“We have an exciting announcement for all of you,” the principal starts with a proud smile. “Next week, all of you will be travelling to a higher education fair at the capital to talk to representatives from different universities.”
Excited chatter spreads throughout the crowd, but the principal soon clears her throat and it goes quiet. “You will stay in a hotel for one night. We require three things for this to happen. One: if you are still under eighteen, your parents must sign this permission slip that allows you to come to the university fair and stay in a hotel under our supervision. Two: you must form groups of four that will decide who you are sharing a room with. Same-sex groups only. Three: you must behave.”
The chatter bursts back into life like a wildfire, and Luna lets out a secret breath of relief. This means Alexy won’t be able to get into their room. Maybe that’s for the best: just girl talk for one night.
“If all is clear, please plan your groups and report them to Mr. Boris by the end of the day.”
A wrist grabs Luna’s and she quickly meets Rosalya’s alarmed eyes. “They can’t seriously make us exclude Alexy, can they? What if we asked for a special permission?”
“On the account of what?”
“Of him not being interested in girls, obviously!” Rosalya nudges Luna to make her look towards Alexy in the crowd, standing beside Armin with a small frown on his face. “Look at him. Would he hurt a fly?”
He hurt Luna, though. Maybe she hurt him too, but what’s that saying about turning the other cheek?
Well, maybe they’re both bad people.
“Maybe we should just… ask Kim and Violette? Weren’t they planning on sharing a room?”
“Well, I guess. It doesn’t matter that much, anyway. We’ll be partying all night!” Rosalya cheers, and Luna quickly covers her mouth so as not to attract attention from the teachers.
“Let’s just go find Kim and Violette, yeah?” Luna asks with a nervous chuckle.

“Hey, mom. Dad,” Luna starts as she slips into the living room. It feels like she hasn’t talked to them in ages, having been too busy with silly crushes and stupid fights with her best friend. “I need you to sign this permission slip.”
Her dad looks up from his newspaper. “Another orienteering race coming up?”
“Nope. A college fair this time around,” she explains and hands the paper to him.
“Oh, you’re growing up so fast,” Luna’s mom says with a sigh. “Soon you’ll be off and you’ll never talk to us again!”
“It’s not going to be like that!” Luna insists. “It’s still a whole semester and summer away, and besides, I don’t even know what I’m going to study yet.”
“In that case, this fair better be enlightening,” her dad mumbles while reading the paper over. “It’s going to be in a different city?”
“Yeah. We’ll spend the night at a hotel.”
“Oh, that’s exciting!” her mom chirps before growing serious. “Who are you sharing a room with?”
“It better be with just girls,” her dad mumbles.
“It will be! With Rosa, Kim and Violette,” Luna insists. With a sudden boost of courage, she continues, “And even if it was with a boy, don’t you trust me?”
Her mom laughs before saying, “I just know that I was your age once too. Hormones are all over the place at that time.”
“Well, it’s a good thing I don’t have a crush right now,” she chuckles despite the fact that her feelings are more muddied than ever at the moment. “So, will you sign it?”
“Yeah. It’s going to be good for you, the fair,” her dad says and signs the slip. As he hands it back to Luna, he gives her a pointed look. “There’s always time for romance later, you know.”
“I know, I know!” she groans.
“But wasn’t that Lysander nice? He visited once with your other friends, right?” her mom asks, and something crawls under Luna’s skin.
“Lysander’s just a friend, mom!”
Her dad says, “That’s for the best.”
“What about Armin, then? Oh, or Alexy? You’re close with him, right?”
“Okay, enough! I’m not Alexy’s type, anyway. I thought you didn’t want me to focus on romance right now!”
“I’m just saying… love can be a wonderful thing,” Luna’s mom says with a smile. “If you ever come across it, savour it. Even if it’s not right at this moment.”
With a sigh, Luna turns to go back to her room. “I will!” she calls after her before closing the door and just standing there by the entrance of her room.
If what Alexy said is true, things with Lysander are over. That’s fine, as she isn’t in love with him or anything. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt, though.
It burns in her chest, but she should consider herself lucky. She has another choice. Not a second choice. Just another one. However, maybe Luna should first get over her feelings for Lysander. Just to be rational. Just to be safe.
She’d hate for Armin to get hurt because he doesn’t think she values him.
God, why did she have to fall for two guys at once? Why couldn’t she focus on her studies or something? Why is it always romance? Luna doesn’t want to become Lucy, as much as she values that friend of hers.
But who knows what will happen at the college fair? They’ll be away from home, so things are bound to be a bit different.
Luna just hopes that things will go okay. She just hopes that no one will get hurt.
