Chapter Text

There was a series of knocks on the front door interrupting the early morning in the apartment shared by Oikawa Tooru and Kazahana Yukimi.

As much as the dark-haired girl wanted to snuggle into her blankets more, the knocks kept coming until she groaned in aggravation, and unconsciously hitting the person sleeping beside her hours prior. It was her first year in university and she needed all the sleep she could get but the person trying to break in wouldn’t let her. Taking the nearest piece of clothing she could find on the floor and a clean pair of underwear, Yukimi went out of her room with only a too-large shirt covering her figure. Padding towards the front door, she didn’t forget glaring at the door of the other room in the apartment. It was a miracle that Oikawa didn’t wake up from the incessant knocking.

Cursing slightly, Yukimi opened the door while balancing herself from the ache of her hips and legs.

On the other side of the door was a girl, paling at the sight of Yukimi. The girl was on the verge of tears and the caramel-eyed beauty peeked outside the doorway to see if the girl might have lost herself in the complex. Her doubts vanished when the girl wailed, perfect appearance shattering in an instant, “I knew it! He was cheating on me!”

Yukimi leaned back, mouth parting in shock. Who was cheating on her? “Excuse me? I think you got the wrong apartment.” She looked back for some help but it looked like her brother had no plans of waking up. Of course, Oikawa had to practice yesterday so now he’s out like a light.

The girl shook her head rapidly. “No, no, no. This is the right apartment. Oikawa-kun told me that he lived in this apartment complex and he even brought me here once.” The girl swiveled her head towards Yukimi, her tear-stained eyes becoming icy as she raked her gaze over the dark-haired girl. She took in how Yukimi only wore a large shirt that could’ve been Oikawa’s, hair messy that it looked like someone weaved their fingers through it, and neck adorned with marks that looked perfect on her skin. Not to mention that Yukimi looked so pretty for early morning and the girl felt a bubble of distaste brewing in her gut. She scrunched her face, feigning disgust, “What are you doing in his apartment, you bitch?”

“What?” Yukimi incredulously asked. “What did you just call me?” She stepped forward, face to face with the unknown girl. “Me? One of the owners of this apartment and you’re asking what am I doing in Tooru’s place. If you’re his girlfriend, you should at least ask if he’s living with a rela—“

“Kimi-chan?” Oikawa yawned, stretching his arms out before sleepily scratching his torso. In actuality, he was woken up by the knocks but he chose not to mind them since he needed some sleep after a long day of volleyball practice. He opened one of his eyes as he stopped in the middle of the living room, freezing at the sight of Yukimi narrowing her eyes at him with a girl he was sure he broke up with a month ago. “Uh, what is going on here? Mio-chan, what are you doing here? I thought we broke things off last month. How did you get here?”

“Oikawa-kun!” The girl, Mio, cried out before glaring at a perplexed Yukimi. “Is this girl the reason why we broke up? You were cheating on me and you chose her in the end?” Yukimi tried to calm her down with a hand but Mio slapped it away from her. “Don’t touch me, bitch!”

“Hey!” Oikawa shouted, making his way towards the two people in the doorway. “Don’t call Kimi-chan that.” He gently pushed Yukimi inside the room, planting himself between the two girls. At the action, Mio’s tears once again appeared. It was the first time she saw Oikawa this angry. Who was that girl he was protecting? For Oikawa though, the last straw was his ex-girlfriend badmouthing Yukimi. The brown-haired boy flashed a faux smile the sent shivers down the girl outside of their apartment. “Mio-chan, why don’t we settle things in the living room.”

Yukimi was now in the kitchen, eyeing the girl sitting comfortably on their couch as she started preparing breakfast. She pretended that Mio wasn’t glaring at her and turned around to the refrigerator to get the vegetables and eggs. While she was immersed in making the mushroom soup, she felt someone stop beside her. Without looking up from cutting the green onions for the soup, she murmured, “Tooru, she doesn’t know that you’ve been living with me for four months now?”

Oikawa sighed, pouring two glasses of water. “No. She never asked, to begin with.”

Yukimi pursed her lips. “She just accused me of being your other woman.”

The brown-haired man sighed again, more stressed than the last. “I know.”

“Do you know how surprised I was?”

“I know.”

“You need to tell her I’m your sister or this gets worse than it already is.”

“I will. That smells amazing, Kimi-chan. I’m excited about breakfast.” Oikawa ruffled Yukimi’s hair affectionately before returning to the living room with the glasses of water. “Here, Mio-chan, I suggest drinking off that anger.”

The dark-haired girl rolled her eyes, focusing her attention on cutting the carrot, green onions, and ginger in front of her. She vaguely remembered Oikawa mentioning a girlfriend the first few weeks they moved to Tokyo. Her brother suggested that before going overseas to pursue volleyball as a career, he will be staying with Yukimi to make her feel less lonely, and that meant that he was going to live his life to the fullest in his last months in Japan. That included trying out dating again. After a very heartfelt break-up in high school, Oikawa started dating someone again the moment they moved. For the second time, Yukimi had no idea who this person her brother was dating. He told her that the girl was the same age as them and that she could be in the same university as Yukimi. It’s not that Yukimi cared too much but she wanted to make sure Oikawa is in good hands, supported by someone other than his family and friends.

Yukimi feigned nonchalance while mixing the fried rice, listening to every word Oikawa and his ex were exchanging.

“Even if I have nothing to explain because we’ve broken up.” There was that sigh again. “Mio-chan, that girl who opened the door is family.”

“So now you’ve gone off and married her?!”

Yukimi nearly dropped her ladle.

“What—?”

“This is why I should’ve listened to my best friend! You are no good for me!”

“Wait, wait. Kimi-chan is my step-sister. What are you even talking about?!”

Mio scoffed, throwing her hands in the air. “You’re just using that as an excuse. This is what men always say. If a girl is found in their apartment, they claim her as their sister or long-lost relative when in fact, they were railing her throughout the night. Great, didn’t know you were one of those bastards, Oikawa-kun.”

Yukimi blanched, seeing the expression of disgust on Oikawa even though she wasn’t facing the living room. There was a thud on one of the armchairs, probably the brown-haired boy plopping his form on top of the cushions to gain some sanity. She could envision him rubbing his temples like those times when he didn’t like the serves he was practicing. She once again heard her brother’s voice, “For fuck’s sake, Mio-chan. First of all, that’s disgusting because I wouldn’t dare do that to Kimi-chan. After all, as I told you, she’s my sister! Second, if I did that, not only will our Moms — yes, Mio-chan, Moms, they married each other for your information — disown me, her boyfriend and best friends will hunt me down. And let me tell you, Kimi-chan’s friends are not some people you’d mess around with.”

“So you’re not related then? Are you in love with your step-sister or what?”

The silence that followed was so thick that Yukimi had to peek over her shoulder to check if Oikawa didn’t lose his last shred of patience. Then, Oikawa muttered along the lines of, “I’d choose Kimi-chan over you any day if that’s the case,” before raising his voice to stop Mio from interrupting him, “and that’s because she doesn’t barge in her ex’s apartment so early in the morning. Do I have to remind you that you were the one who broke up with me?”

“That’s because you’ve become so distant lately!”

“I’ve been practicing!”

“Oh, you and your volleyball again!”

“This is why it’s better why we broke up. I have to thank you for doing it first because this relationship is beyond saving!”

Once the mushroom soup was done, Yukimi immediately turned off the stove before making way to the living room with only her shirt and apron on. Now she was worried because the two were on the verge of fighting and it could ruin the first hours of the morning. “Guys, I forgot to mention—,” she tried to tell them but they continued shouting against each other. “Hey, can you two calm down?” Right when she was about to step over to the couches; a warm pair of arms wrapped around her, a face nuzzling on the crook of her neck and lips tenderly brushing over one of the marks he painted on her. She could feel him smile against her skin and the bare, toned torso pressed on her back, making her heart pound. Yukimi turned around and her caramel hues tangled with the alluring gold she fell in love with. “Tetsu?”

“Good morning, Hana,” Kuroo murmured on her skin, swaying the two of them lightly. “You weren’t there when I woke up. I wanted to see you first thing in the morning but you’re already gone.” He pouted adorably. “I wanted another round before breakfast.”

Oh, how Yukimi wanted to relish in the comforts her boyfriend gave her but the abrupt stop in the argument in the living room and the two pairs of eyes on her made her freeze. “Uhm, Tetsu, you might want to open your eyes, baby.”

“Hmm?” Kuroo lazily followed his girlfriend’s instructions and was met with a slack-jawed girl and a relieved Oikawa. “Who the fuck is that? Oi, Oika’a-san, is this your girlfriend?”

“I think you might need a shirt, too.”

Kuroo looked down on Yukimi, trailing his eyes over the apron and the familiar shirt she donned, just reaching the middle of her thighs. A half-smile lit his face. “You stole it from me. You already stole my heart and now, my sweaters and shirts. What are you going to steal next time? My last name?”

“Okay, lovebirds!” Oikawa called, clapping his hands to catch the attention of the couple. “Thank you for saving me. And Mio-chan, can you do me the favor of going home so that we can enjoy our breakfast in peace? Kimi-chan’s cooking is waiting and I don’t want that to spoil.” The brown-haired man waited for the girl’s response with wary eyes, her face still locked on the couple, more specifically on the shirtless man doting on Yukimi. “I know Kuro-chan has an amazing body but I need you to go home.” Silence answered his plea so Oikawa had no choice but to check if Mio was still functioning after seeing a naked chest. “Mio-chan?” He reached out a hand but the girl stepped back with a flinch.

“You had a threesome?!”

Kuroo’s loud cackle rang through from the moment Mio said those words to when she went home after an explanation from Yukimi until the three of them sat for breakfast. Oikawa wanted to bury himself under the ground, face so red that it rivaled the cherry tomatoes in the salad plate. He groaned when Kuroo couldn’t stop laughing, with the black-haired man leaning on his girlfriend to steady him. Oikawa was sitting in front of the couple and that only made it worse because every time Kuroo opened his eyes to calm down, he would crack up again until Yukimi couldn’t help but chuckle along at the situation. Throughout Kuroo’s laughing fit, the dark-haired girl did the job of giving the two their share of the fried rice and mushroom soup.

“Can you please stop laughing?” Kuroo’s laugh became louder, making Oikawa grit his teeth. “Kimi-chan! Your boyfriend is still laughing at me!” Oikawa whined, his voice cracking.

Yukimi shook her head, placing a slice of Spam on each plate. “Tetsurou, Tooru is getting uncomfortable. I think that’s enough laughing for the morning.”

“What?” Oikawa sputtered. “So he’s going to continue making fun of me in the afternoon?! Oh, come on, Kimi-chan!”

The dark-haired girl rolled her eyes with a smile as Kuroo snickered, the latter wiping his tears from laughing too hard. “I’m not making fun of you, Oika’a-san. It’s just that your ex was too funny. A threesome?” He laughed again, only calming down when Yukimi placed a gentle hand on his arm. “Who thinks that? You’re attractive and all, Oika’a-san, but the assumption of your ex was just gold. I wouldn’t even think of doing that with Hana by my side.” Kuroo wrapped an arm around Yukimi’s waist, the girl smiling before taking a spoonful of fried rice. “Besides this is pure comedy at its peak.”

“No, don’t say what I think you’re going to say,” Oikawa murmured, spoon in hand and face scrunched in disgust.

“I won’t let you live past this.”

Oikawa turned to the dark-haired girl peacefully eating her breakfast. “Kimi-chan!” The girl looked up with cheeks stuffed with lettuce and fried rice, making the two men laugh. Kuroo even wiped the corner of her lips free of rice grains. “You need to find another boyfriend. Preferably one that wouldn’t provoke me!”

Yukimi gulped down, sipping her coffee before replying, “I’m sorry, Tooru, you’re going to deal with Tetsu a lot because I have no plans of finding another partner.”

“Nice try, Oika’a-san.”

“Shut up, you rooster-haired bastard!”

“Hey, Hana, this tastes amazing!”

“Stop ignoring me!”

“It’s a good thing Mio-san woke me up to whip these up for you guys.”

“Not you, too, Kimi-chan!”
