Chapter 1: In Which We Arrive at the Tower, and There's a Little 'Mix-Up'
Chapter Text
“Why don’t you two losers calm down a bit.”’
“But MJ it’s the Avengers Tower.”
“And it’s still the main headquarters of SI! Rand Is nice and all, but they don’t do anything like—”
Peter felt his spidey-sense go off a second before a pen flew across the bus aisle and hit him in the back of his head.
“You still talking about how you know Danny Rand from your internship at that shithole of a law firm? Do you honestly think that a billionaire would hire people like that to do his business?”
“The lawyers from that shithole of a law firm beat your dad’s ass in court last month after he wrongfully arrested three men.” MJ replied “And they took down Fisk, twice.”
Flash opened his mouth just in time for his response to be drowned out by the cheers of Mr. Harrington’s senior Chemistry class as they pulled up to the Tower.
In a different universe Peter Parker might have been freaking out at the thought of being outed as Spider-Man or as Tony Starks mentee while on the trip. But here, in this one, the thought hadn’t even crossed his mind Yeah, he had worked with the Stark several times before, but that was while in the mask. He had also only met the man after Matt had taught him to sound like he gargled gravel for breakfast, and after Jessica had pulled him aside to show him how to change his voice without ‘sounding like an idiot’ so, he was pretty confidant that no one would be able to connect the random high-school kid on tour to Spider-Man.
Mr. Harrinton began lecturing the class on being on their best behavior (a glance at Flash), with no sneaking off (a pointed look at Peter) and being respectful of the Towers rules. As soon as he finished, everyone rushed off the bus, blatantly ignoring the cries of to walk in single file. They came to a stop in front of the tower, everyone craning their necks to see the massive Avengers logo at the top. For the first time the buzzing of excitement died down as the class stared, starstruck look on each person’s face.
“Well come on guys! We don’t have time to gawk. You’re here to see the inside today!!”
Shit. Peter knew that voice. Sure enough, when his head to the man speaking, he saw familiar blonde hair and a plastered-on smile.
“My name is Clint and I’ll be your tour guide today. You guys are Midtown, right? I’m not about to take some group of random teenagers into SI headquarters and the Avengers Tower, am I?” He got a few laughs and exited ‘yeses’ as the class turned to him. They don’t know. Of course, they don’t know, Clint and Natasha are spies. The media only got their codenames to put in the papers.
Peter Parker shouldn’t know either. After all, its Spider-Man who pulls Hawkeye out of dumpsters every few months. He should stop trying to figure out why Hawkeye of all people is their tour guide because Peter has never gone on missions with the SI employee, Clint. Whatever his reason is to pretend to be a tour guide, Barton is a trained spy. Peter needs to stop staring at the tour guide as if he’s seen a ghost and act like a normal teenager on a school trip.
He tears his eyes away from clint and stares at his shoes, then realizes with a blush that he should be looking at Clint, and listening to the rules.
“. . . so those are your general guidelines, I will repeat myself before entering any labs, but for now I will pass these badges off to your teacher to hand out. Then we will stop loitering out here and get to the cool stuff inside!”
As Mr. Harrington called out names Clint began to talk again.
“So, remember guys, always keep your badges visible at all times. The Tower’s AI can use the code programed into them to tell that you’re allowed, but security won’t be very Happy if they see you without one.”
Peter was handed his badge, just a simple looking plastic square with TOUR written in bold beside his school photo. He clipped it on as he followed Clint through the doors and over to various metal detectors.
“Now if you would get into a single file line, each of you will get a small container to put your phones and other personal items in. Everything will be locked up and returned to you at the end of the day.” He smiled at the grumbles, “Yes, yes, you need to leave your phones. What a horror.
“After you’ve done all that, swipe your badge at the metal detector, and go through to the other side. Anyone with hearing aids like me, or other medical devices made from metal can follow me to an alternate screening zone to make sure we don’t set off any alarms.”
Naturally, Flash pushed to the front of the lines and rushed through, turning red as the alarm went off because he forgot to swipe his card first. Peter shared a smile with MJ before turning back to put his backpack into his container. He made a mental to thank Matt for talking him out of wearing his suit under his clothes all the time, or in his bag, especially since Melvin made it with metal webbing on the knuckles.
Once it was Peter’s turn to go up to the security guards by the metal detectors, most of his class had passed through and were waiting one the other side. One of the guards gave him a blank stare as she explained how his details would pop up on the screen by the detector after he swiped his card.
But before he could do that, something different filled the screen. Something red and blue. Something telling the guards to direct Spider-Man to the Avengers conference room A for the meeting going on with the Defenders.
Chapter 2: In Which We Get Matt's POV, and Peter Learns the Meaning of Irony
Summary:
Thank you all so much for your comments and kudos! I had no idea that so many people would like my little mindworm
This might be a tad anticlimactic for the cliffhanger on the last chapter, but it's all setting up for a really exiting ending. I hope you like it!!

Chapter Text
“Mr. Stark, Spider-Man has entered the tower and will be up momentarily.”
Matt startled at Jarvis’s voice, Then felt his heart beat faster and heard as his heartrate climbed alongside the rest of the Defenders’ when he heard the rest of the message.
“Spider-Man? Didn’t you guys say that he couldn’t get off work?”
“He couldn’t.” A sinking feeling made its way into Matt's gut. They shouldn’t have come here. He shouldn’t have let Danny talk them into accepting the invite to the Tower. They were going to turn it down anyways – The Defenders weren’t a team, just a group of people with common interest – but when Peter mentioned that his class would being touring on the same day – Shit. Just shit. A joke wasn’t worth Peter’s identity.
“Hey you sure it’s Spidey and not just some cosplayer?” Danny’s voice was cool and collected, with hardly a hint of his fast beating heart.
“Jarvis wouldn’t mix up any fakes,” Tony scoffed, “With you masked hero types he analyzes your walking and speech patterns, as well other mannerisms to conclude who you are without needing to see your face—and before you ask, unless one of you walks into my tower without your mask Jarvis won’t be able to tell who you are.”
Matt tilted his head towards Jess, seething at what Stark had just said, while wondering what they could do now.
“Though you know that if we’re going to make our work together official, we will need—”
“Apologies Sir. It appears that there has been a mix up. Spider-Man is not in the Tower.”
“Then who the hell is?”
“A Peter Parker. He is the same height and build as Spider-Man, and has a similar walking pattern. My systems picked up n this before scanning his face, and jumped to the wrong conclusions.”
Relief flooded Matt as he listened to Stark complain to the AI about thinking some random high-schooler was Spider-Man. Then Jess turned her head to Captain Rogers.
“The four of us are here as promised,” she grumbled, “If the rest of your team would show up so that we can get this over with, it would be much appreciated.”
“If we could just wait a few more minutes for Agent Romanov—”
“Is Barton not coming?”
“No, he has other priorities at the moment.”
The Captain’s heart fluttered at that. Interesting.
—
Peter’s face remained flushed as he followed his class to the elevator and up to the R&D intern labs. He barely heard Clint explaining where they were going and the rules they would need to follow. Ned kept shooting him concerned looks that he hardly noticed. After they had filed into the lab, a woman introduced herself as Dr. Clayton, the department head. She explained a bit about what they did, then started talking about a contest that had been set up for them. Peter tried to listen to her, but the adrenaline and embarrassment from being outed as Spider-Man was still there.
The security guards had been quick to laugh it off and fix the ‘glitch’, but Peter hadn’t known that JARVIS could recognize him without the suit. He had thought that the AI just knew what his mask looked like, or let him in because he was with one of the Avengers. It was now that he began to realize he that he didn’t understand how JARVIS worked. Before he thought it was cool of Stark to design an AI butler, but now he found it terrifying. What else did he know about Peter and the Defenders?
On top of that, Peter had no clue how Hawkeye was reacting. Sure, the man had acted like it was a funny mix-up, then waved everyone into the elevators. But Peter wasn’t Matt. He didn’t constantly have everyone’s heart beats and their various bodies reactions in his ears. His hearing and all round awareness only cranked up if he was really focusing or having sensory overload. He had frozen in the moment and didn’t pay attention to see if Clint the tour guide’s reaction matched up with the way the spy would try to hide his body’s reaction. Now he didn’t know if he had just lost his secret identity and his stomach was churning. Hawkeye was one of the good guys, but he was still on government payroll and—
There was a hand on his shoulder. Peter stiffened and fought the urge to punch Clint; doing that wouldn’t help his case.
“Hey kid, relax. We aren’t going to go make you fight aliens with the Avengers because you walk like Spider-Man.” There was truth in his words. “Now go join your friends and try to figure out how it works. And remember Spider-Boy, if you don’t win this contest, I will be very disappointed in you.”
Clint gave him a push over to the table that Ned and MJ sat at with Flash. One look at the project and Peter used up all his willpower to not bang his head on the table. Spider-Man’s webshooters. They had to try reverse engineer Spider-Man’s webshooters. Of course, his Parker Luck™ had led to him being put in a group with Flash Fucking Thompson and having to pretend that he hadn’t made the thing that they were trying to figure out. He knew everything there was to know about how they worked. He knew because he jumped off buildings while his life depended on them.
“I know this sounds hard man, but at least we aren’t in the group doing physics of the Iron Fist punching Luke Cage.” Ned must have seen the look on his face and tried to find an excuse for it.
“Pfft,” Flash interrupted “It won’t be that hard. I know everything there is to know about Spider-Man.”
‘Really?” asked MJ, “Did you get the chance to ask how his webshooters worked when he hijacked your car two years ago?”
“Hey! I was helping Spider-Man. I doubt any of you pathetic losers could have done anything for him.”
The irony of Flash’s words wasn’t lost on Peter, but they had a job to do and he had already missed enough of the instructions thanks to zoning out.
“It doesn’t matter who helped him. We just need to figure out how these might work. These videos show that he just presses a button on his palm and the webs come out. That means they could work like…” Peter tried his best to dumb down how the shooters worked, as well as leaving out all the fine tuning. Then Flash interrupted him and grabbed the tablet out of his hands.
"No one put you in charge Penis. You might have been mistaken for Spidey at security, but I’m the one who knows the most about him. There is no way his webshooters work like that. I can’t get this wrong because of you, not if Spider-Man is going to see my work.”
“What? Why would Spider-Man. . .” Peter trailed off, confused because no one had said anything about this to him, and surely one of the Defenders would have told him about it. Unless of course they planned on embarrassing him in front of everyone, but then why would Flash know about it?
“Dr. Clayton said that some higher-ups who know about this sort of thing and people in the building for a conference might come and judge us.” explained Ned, “Everyone thinks that it’ll be the Avengers and Defenders since all the projects are on their weapons or powers, and because when JARVIS thought you were Spidey, he tried to send you up to a conference room. How cool is that! Do you think Captain America would sign my shirt?”
Perfect. Great. To think that he had been exited about visiting SI, and how he thought he wouldn’t see anyone he knew in the mask because they wouldn’t come down to the labs his class was touring. Could this trip go wrong in any other way?
Notes:
I wrote the first half while listening to the How To Train Your Dragon Soundtrack and the second half in a tree 10/10 would recommend
I know that the Clint thing seems sort of random right now, but just stick around and you'll see why he's there
Chapter 3: In Which I Give you only Part of A Chapter
Summary:
So I didn't want to leave you all hanging for the next few months so here's the beginning of the 3rd chapter. It's not edited at all so please forgive any mistakes or randomness
Notes:
This is not edited at all. It still has my notes on how I need to clean it up. I do not fix grammar or spelling until the whole chapter is finished, so enjoy that awful spelling and double letters
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
Before you read this and die from my unedited bad grammar, sentence structure, and spelling, I would like to tell you that if you are dying to know where this story is going and don't care about reading the fic as much as consuming the story, I can help you. Just message me on tumblr at https://swamp--goblin--swamp.tumblr.com/ and I'll send you the outline.
The outline for this story is fairly detailed, so you can still enjoy the story.
Standing in the back corner with your head hidden under a large hoodie is a great way to blend in to the backdrop and be forggtton. It is especially effective when everyone else in the room is being loud and clamouring for attention. It is not at all effectve against someone who uses your heartbeat and and smell to NOPE SMELLING IS WEIRD CUT THAT OUT to identify you, or someone who is gspecifically looking for YOU.
Thankfull, no one wanted to blow Peter's cover after what had happened earlier, so the Defenders seemingly ignored him, seeming lydidn't know he was there. Seemingly. ADD SOMETHING ABOUT SNIDE REMARKS UNDER BREATH BECAUSE SUPER HEARING
Danny was upfront smiling with Captain Rogers. Stark signed with a blase attidude. Doctor Banner stood wide eyed as he was mobbed by teenagers with questions about his work, and praises for various papers he had written. Jess, unlike Luke, refused to listen to anything directed at her. She stood to the side with Matt. Despite the hornslooking ridiculous in the liht, Daredevil's reputation preceded hi. Anyone who looked like they might aproach him had the words die in their throats.
"Alright everybody, calm down. There will be time for questions Later." DR. Clayton's Voice Rang ot.
