Bucky:

Bucky: how did you know?

Bucky: I thought was being so subtle

Sam: there was the time you got really annoyed at me for wanting to tell you how I felt about you before kissing you

Sam: that was one of my first big clues

Sam: after that the evidence really started coming in

Bucky: can't get anything by you

Sam: depends on how you're distracting me

Bucky: good point

Bucky: can you talk?

Sam: give me a few minutes

Bucky: I also just wanted to say thanks

Bucky: for what you said

Sam: I wondered if you'd circle back to that after we hung up

Sam: love how you have no shame when you're talking about what you want to do next time I'm in your bed but "thanks" is too much to manage

Bucky: well, then I'm talking about things I know you want

Bucky: there's not a whole lot of anxiety around how you'll react if I say I want to do it again

Sam: you're ridiculous

Sam: you're welcome, though.

Sam: I feel like that's not all you want to say, but I'm not taking you off the hook. say it or it's not getting discussed.

Bucky: I hate you

Bucky: did you mean to say say that I was someone you loved very much in your post?

Sam: wow, record time. nice job.

Bucky: I hate you

Sam: honestly, I didn't really process my word choice until after I'd posted it. it's obviously true, and you know it's true, but no, that's not a conversation I was really intending to start on top of everything else going on.

Bucky: okay

Sam: while we're on the subject, though, don't wait on me to start it - that's a conversation that you get to start.

Bucky: that's kind of you

Sam: you're the one who gets anxiety about stuff like this. I can't do the worrying about how you'll respond thing, I hate having to try to judge that

Sam: you know that

Bucky: that's fair

Bucky: sorry

Sam: not trying to make you feel bad, buck

Sam: just letting you know

Sam: do you want me to change the subject?

Bucky: yes please

Sam: okay, so I've been wondering all day - what's with the wolf??

Bucky: what wolf?

Sam: shuri's reply to you had a rainbow and a wolf

Bucky: oh

Bucky: well, I told you

Bucky: you were joking that I came out of wakanda white panther and I told you it was white wolf

Sam: sorry, I guess I forgot to follow up on that

Sam: must've gotten distracted, don't remember what by

Sam: probably something minor and unimportant

Bucky: yeah, yeah

Sam: I'm following up now, so what does that mean?

Bucky: it's just what the wakandans call me

Bucky: white wolf

Sam: really?

Bucky: yes

Bucky: that's what ayo called me

Sam: I didn't notice

Sam: why "white wolf"?

Bucky: you'd have to ask them

Sam: you're the one I'm dating, I'm asking you

Bucky: I don't know

Bucky: they just do

Bucky: I like it, though. it's nice to have a fun name that's not "the winter soldier" or "captain america's sidekick" or whatever.

Sam: yeah, I can see that

Sam: thanks

Bucky: yeah

Sam: yeah?

Bucky: you're not insecure about how I feel about you, right?

Bucky: I mean, you don't need reassurance or anything?

Sam: no, bucky, I don't need reassurance

Sam: I am very secure

Bucky: okay

Bucky: good

Bucky: I'm going to try to go to sleep, sleep well

Sam: you too

Sam: you're sure you're okay?

Bucky: yeah

Bucky: are you?

Sam: other than being annoyed by reporters, yes

Sam: get some sleep or I'll come make you sleep
Bucky: I don't think that's quite the threat you think it is

Sam: yeah, I kind of realized that after I'd said it

Notes:

sam refusing to take bucky off the hook even when he knows what bucky's going to say makes a return! (this is actually a thing I really try to make a point of - especially since sam is a lot more intuitive and confident in his ability to read a situation than bucky is, I think it's really important to have him drawing consistent boundaries around communication so he doesn't end up doing a disproportionate amount of the emotional labor, because that's a really easy dynamic to fall into and can become very problematic in a hurry.)

nyc thing:

  • nyc has five boroughs; bucky (and steve) are from brooklyn, and peter is from queens. sam referring to peter by his borough is kind of a really lowkey +callback to endgame, where steve called peter "queens" when he threw mjolnir to him.
