Wings of Time

Summary:

What if you had a chance to fix everything you have done?

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

What if life gave you another chance to fix things?

This thought was on Winter’s mind since Qibli and Anemone teleported him to the Ice Kingdom on the battle between the IceWings and the NightWings.

What if something allowed someone to fix the mistakes they made in the past?

Winter often thought of these things even after Snowfall reinstated him as prince of the IceWing kingdom. He walked within the Ice Kingdom halls to check where he was in the circle, and when he was looking, his jaw dropped. The wall where the circle listings were someone destroyed it. He went to the nearest dragon, who was a soldier.

“Who destroyed the gift of order?” Winter asked.

“Queen Snowfall,” the IceWing soldier said.

Winter was very confused, so he assumed that Queen Snowfall was trying to change how the Ice Kingdom worked.

Queen Snowfall let Winter stay here as long as he liked, but he wanted to go back to Sanctuary to see what the remaining Pantalans were doing.

Plus, he wanted to try to get some scavengers to live there without fear of being eaten.

“Hi, Winter!” a voice came from behind him.

Winter turned around and found Mink looking at him.

“Princess Mink, I have never seen you in a long time,” Winter said.

“Winter, please. Don’t call me a princess when you are my cousin,” Mink said. “I still love it when you call me just Mink.”

“Okay, just Mink,” Winter told her. He realized what he said, and memories of Qibli surfaced in his mind.

“Hey!” Mink pouted. “You’re playing with me!”

“Sorry, a friend used to do that to me,” Winter said.

“Ooh! Who is that friend? Is it a NightWing?” Mink asked.

Moonwatcher came to his mind. “No, he is a SandWing. I am sure you saw him before.”

“Where?” Mink asked.

“He was with Queen Thorn when Snowfall was in meetings,” Winter said.

“Oh!? Him?” Mink asked.

“Yes,” Winter said.

“Where is he?” Mink asked.

“Flying to another continent,” Winter said.

“He’s stopping evil?” Mink asked. “Awesome!”

“That’s Qibli, alright,” Winter said with a smile.

“Mink! Where are you?” came the voice of Snowfall.

“Coming!” Mink called. “Bye, Winter! It was nice seeing you again.”

Winter waved to Mink as she turned around and ran.

Winter smiled and walked towards the wall where the gift of order was.

He touched one of the rocks which contained the seventh circle, where he supposedly was, but the words were gone.

He then found another object - a glowing rock.

That wasn’t glowing when he first saw the broken wall. He proceeded to touch it until he disappeared without a trace.

Chapter 3: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

Moon stood awkwardly under her mother. She fit perfectly under her mother’s wing as if that spot had been shaped by the universe just for her. Like a sign: This is where you should be. Stay here for always.

But she wanted to find Qibli. After the whole Pantala and the Othermind fiasco, Qibli and Moonwatcher wanted a break from prophecies. But Moon woke up as a four-year-old dragonet again and somehow was with her mother again, not that she could complain about it. It was the day she came to Jade Mountain Academy.

They’d found a spot under a tree where they could watch the main arrival area for the school, which perhaps hadn’t been the best idea, as now Moon was fairly sure she’d seen about a thousand different kinds of dragons, all of them entirely too loud. At least she could control her powers by now. She shied away from as two MudWings galloped past her, shouting and laughing, and she dismissed their thoughts with raindrops.

“Mom, I can take care of myself,” Moon said. “I think I can go through this school year without complications.”

“Are you sure?” Secretkeeper looked at her. “You were very scared last night.”

“Mom! I am very sure! Can you see that I am okay?” Moon said.

Secretkeeper sighed. “I’ll visit,” her mother promised. “You’ll see me all the time. And you’ll make friends here, I’m sure you will.” Well, I hope you will, my weird little diamond.

“I’m not a weird little diamond,” Moon protested.

Secretkeeper crouched and put her face right in front of Moon’s. “You need to stop doing that, remember?” she whispered. “If you only hear it in your head, don’t respond. No one can know about your curse. Everybody thinks NightWings don’t have powers anymore — they won’t know what to do with you if they find out.” And how will you make friends that way , her mind worried, if you keep guessing their thoughts and making them uncomfortable? “Or they might not believe you, and then they’ll hate you for lying. So don’t let them find out, all right?”

“I know,” Moon answered. “Stay secret. Stay hidden. Stay safe.” All the years of pretending to have mind-reading powers had made the NightWings truly fear the idea of any dragon reading their minds. But she was prepared. She didn’t know how she winded up in the past, but she was going to make up for all the mistakes she had done.

“Oh, look,” Secretkeeper said obliviously, her eyes lighting up. She pointed to the sky, where blue and green wings were sailing down toward them. “SeaWings! Do you see the one with the ropes of pearls? I think that their queen!”

“Queen Coral,” Moon recited. One thing she could do — that didn’t involve being stared at by other dragons or accidentally saying the wrong thing — was study, and so she’d done a lot of that to prepare for Jade Mountain Academy.

“Those two must be her daughters since she never lets them out of her sight. I don’t know who the other one is.”

She recognized two of them: Anemone and Turtle. Although, she assumed that the younger one was Auklet, whom Turtle and Anemone talked about a few times.

A deep blue SeaWing came barreling out of the entrance cave as the other’s wings landed. “You came!” she called happily. Her wings flared out and wrapped around Anemone. Auklet, who had to be less than a year old, bounced around their hug, yelping and trying to get in. She was attached to the queen by a long harness, which kept getting tangled under her talons and tripping her.

“I’m not so sure about this,” Queen Coral said in a rumbly voice. She was the same shade of blue as the SeaWing who was now being tackled by the little dragonet, Tsunami.

The famous SeaWing princess from the prophecy had been in the rainforest for a while, but Moon hadn’t met her before Tsunami left to work on getting the Jade Mountain Academy ready. She had often seen her in Jade Mountain Academy, and she even traveled with her and Qibli to Pantala.

“It’ll be great,” Tsunami promised the queen. “I’ll take care of Anemone, I promise.” She grinned at her sister.

“Me too, me too!” yelled Auklet. “I want to go to school, too!” She pounced on her harness and wrestled it to the ground, growling at it.

“You are much too young,” Coral said sternly. She tugged the little princess upright. “I can’t risk anything happening to you, especially while anemone is this far away.”

“Maybe next year, Auklet,” Tsunami said. The little dragon beamed hopefully. The queen frowned at Tsunami. “And I’m only letting this happen because Anemone has been badgering me about it every day since she got your message about the school. But you can come home anytime, you understand? If you feel threatened, or lonely, or overworked, or tired —”

“I’ll be fine,” Anemone said, wriggling away from her mother’s hug.

“Who’s this?” Tsunami asked, turning to Turtle, who sat behind Queen Coral with a patient expression on his face.

“This is one of your brothers,” Queen Coral said. “He heard about this and wanted to come, too. Which one are you again?”

“Turtle,” he said, shooting Tsunami a friendly smile.

“One of my brothers?” Tsunami echoed. “I didn’t realize — I mean, I guess I knew the male eggs were surviving every time your female eggs were destroyed by the Orca statue — but I didn’t even think about having brothers.”

“There are about thirty of us,” Turtle said with a shrug.

“THIRTY?” Tsunami shouted. “I have THIRTY BROTHERS?”

“Well, thirty-two,” he said. His gaze caught Moon watching, and he amusingly wrinkled his snout and smiled.

Wait, he never smiled at me before, Moon realized. Did Turtle time travel with me?

“Why didn’t you mention this before?” Tsunami demanded, whipping towards her mother.

“Who cares about them?” Coral asked. “They can’t inherit the throne.”

Turtle still had that humming silence that confused her. But she didn’t want to think about it.

Tsunami rolled her eyes. “Well, I’m happy to meet you, Turtle,” she said. “And I’m glad you’re joining our school so I can get to know you better.”

“I want to see everything before I leave,” said Queen Coral. Moon caught twin threads of annoyance from Tsunami and Anemone, but Tsunami just nodded.“Of course. Come inside.”

As the SeaWings disappeared into the cave, Turtle looked back at Moon more time, and Moon suddenly had a dizzy, tilting feeling that the mountain was sliding down toward her. Darkness flashed before her eyes, and then a strange image, in bits and pieces like a puzzle whirling together.

An arena. And a SkyWing pinning Turtle to the sand as the green dragon writhed in pain. Then it was gone, and when she blinked, so was the SeaWing family.

Chapter 4: Chapter 2

Chapter Text

Moon shivered. What was that?

When she came, the image was of Turtle pinning Anemone down. But now some SkyWing was pinning Turtle down. She looked familiar, but she couldn’t pinpoint where she saw this SkyWing. Was the future going to change since she and Turtle were here?

Lucky us.

“Wow. A real queen,” Secretkeeper said. “I’ve never seen one before.”

“You see Queen Glory all the time,” Moon pointed out, only half listening.

“Queen Glory is barely older than you are,” Secretkeeper answered. “I mean a real queen, someone who’s ruled her tribe for years and years.”

Many of the NightWings harbored bitter thoughts about having a RainWing for their queen now, but she never thought her mother was one of the grumblers.

“All right,” her mother said, suddenly and briskly. “That’s enough hiding in shadows and ‘observing.’ Time for you to go find your cave.”

“Alright, see you, mom,” Moon said.

Remember, Secretkeeper: Be strong. Just turn and fly away. “I love you, and I will see you soon.”

Secretkeeper took a step back, averting her face, and Moon glimpsed a thought track her mother had been carefully burying: Oh, I hope this is the right thing. What am I doing? How do I know if this will be good for her?

“Keep your curse hidden, and you’ll be fine. Act normal, no matter what happens. And write to me soon! Good-bye!”

A moment later, Secretkeeper was just a dark shape winging away through the threadbare clouds.

That was enough for that. She had to go inside to find Qibli. She shook back her wings, waited for a moment when all was quiet on the landing ledge and darted forward into the yawning mouth of the entrance cave.

“Hello!” a voice accosted her loudly, while Moon’s eyes were still adjusting to the dimmer light inside. “Welcome to the Great Hall of Jade Mountain! Let me guess — you’re Moonwatcher, aren’t you? I’m tremendously good at guessing. In fact, one might even say I’m mysteriously good at it.” The welcoming dragon, whose scales were midnight black, lowered her voice. “Almost as though I’m ... reading your mind , eh?”

If Moon never knew Fatespeaker would be here, she would have gapped at her in shock.

“Just kidding,” said the older NightWing. “MAAAAYBE. I’m Fatespeaker. I’m not a teacher like the others; I’m just helping wherever I can. Here’s your welcome scroll and your map.” She thrust two scrolls into Moon’s talons. “Hey, look, you have silver scales next to your eyes just like I do! Yours are bigger and sparklier, though. It is Moonwatcher, right?”

“Yeah, that’s me,” Moon told her. “Just call me Moon.”

The enormous entrance cave looked as though it could fit four hundred dragons comfortably, with room for more to soar overhead. Sunlight poured in, illuminating the craggy walls and rippled ceiling, where cascades of golden-brown stalactites hung down, some of them reaching all the way to the floor to form twisted columns.

Hanging against the back wall was a huge bronze gong with three flying dragons carved into it. A banner woven of green vines had been strung from one massive stalactite to another in the center of the cave, with letters spelled out in giant purple-and-white flowers: Welcome, students!

Two tunnel openings yawned along the left wall of the cave; two more on the right. Next to each one, a map was posted showing where the tunnels went. The whole cave was busy with bustling dragons: families saying good-bye, friends saying hello, a few dragons carrying around prey or scrolls.

“Moon, Moon, Moon,” Fatespeaker muttered, rolling a scroll between her claws on the floor and scanning it closely. “Ah, here you are. Second tunnel on the left, fifth cave on the right.” She flicked her tail and grinned at Moon.“You’re going to love your clawmates.”

“Ooh, here come some IceWings!” Fatespeaker suddenly cried. “Want to stick around and meet them?”

Moonwatcher looked to the IceWings to see if Winter was among them. To her disappointment, he wasn’t there nor was Icicle. Weird. Did the both of them time travel too, or did Turtle tell Winter something and Icicle came along?

“N-no thanks,” Moon stammered. She hurried to the second tunnel on the left, and as she turned into it, she heard a whoosh of wings and felt a cold chill sweep through the cave. She peeked back around the corner and saw Changbai, Alba, and Ermine pace inside, frowning. No, she definitely did not want to meet them now.

Moon knew where her cave would be. So she just went through by memory.

Soon the tight tunnel straightened out, and Moon could see small cave openings all along either side. This must be the corridor of sleeping caves; she could sense that some of them had two or three dragonets inside already. Each cave she passed seemed to be bristling with chatter and wings and claws and spiky thoughts that clamored for space in her head.

Father said they have a library. I’m going to learn to read! Oh, I hope I’m not the only one who can’t read yet. That would be so embarrassing.

What do they eat up in the mountains? We’d better get seagulls sometimes. And soon. Gosh, I’m hungry. Would anyone be mad at me if I went looking for seagulls?

I wonder where the prophecy dragonets are. I wonder if they’ll notice me!

So cold here. I miss the desert.

Do they really expect me to share a cave with a RainWing?

Moon dismissed these thoughts thinking about raindrops. That certainly helps a lot.

Moon opened her eyes again and fixed her gaze on the fifth cave. She squeezed past a pair of chatting SandWings who were taking up most of the tunnel, and one of them stared at her intently with his obsidian-black eyes.

Moonwatcher! flashed through his head. Can you hear me? I can’t find Winter anywhere . Oh, wait, what if she wasn’t from the past like me? This would be very embarrassing.

I confirmed his thoughts by smiling at him and waving my wing.

I finally found Qibli, Moon thought.

If you know what I am talking about, lift both your wings.

Moon raised both her wings.

Qibli’s eyes widened. And he smiled, but he didn’t come to Moon immediately. He spoke to his fellow SandWings, and then he came to Moon.

“Moon!” Qibli said. He then forced Moon into an embrace. “Thank the moons I am not alone in this!”

“Yeah,” Moon said. As Qibli let go of Moon, Moon said, “I think Turtle came from the past too.”

“Great!” Qibli said. “I hope Winter also came from the past. If not, then that would be embarrassing.”

Moon agreed with Qibli. If that was true, then Winter and Icicle were probably looking for Hailstorm and freeing Hope - Foeslayer - from her cage.

“Alright, you probably have to talk to your SandWing buddies by now, so I’ll go to my sleeping cave,” Moon said.

“Alright, see you,” Qibli said. And they embraced one last time before Moon went to her cave.

The sleeping cave was just as it was when she first came in.

I was tidy and clean. The doorway made up one wall, and a sleeping spot had been arranged along each of the other three walls. One of these was a bare rock ledge, another was a pile of rainforest leaves and mosses, and the third was a woven green hammock ingeniously suspended from the roof.

There were also five mahogany scroll racks arranged around the cave, about the height of her foreleg, each polished until they were as smooth as her scales. There was an empty one next to each bed and one on either side of the door.

Moon slid her welcome scroll and her map scroll into one of the empty racks.

Surprisingly, she never heard Carnelian’s voice, she just only heard Pike’s voice nearby.

Oh, come on. I need to protect Princess Anemone, why did they put me with these dragons ?

Then came him .

Aha, there you are.

Moon ignored this one.

I am talking to you.

In all her time here, she forgot that out of all dragons, he would come back.

Moonwatcher, I am talking to you. Why won’t you say hello?

“Shut up. Shut up. Shut up,” Moon told herself.

That is no way to address a voice in your head, young dragonet.

Moon slid him off with raindrops.

Since he was here, she and her friends had to figure out a different way to defeat him before he would find Mission Peacemaker … as she would call it in her mind for now.

She was about to run to Turtle until Carnelian and Kinkajou suddenly came to the doorway together.

“Oh, my gosh. I am so sorry,” Kinkajou said. “I didn’t even see you there!” Will she ever forgive her?

Huh? Moon thought. That was different. Is Kinkajou from the future too? Is Carnelian from the future too? She didn’t ask me to forgive her. She thought of either me or Carnelian forgiving each other.

“It’s alright,” Moon said. “I was just gonna see someone.”

Oh, mission abort. She’s not from the future. Wait, I shouldn’t be thinking this.

“You too?” Moon asked Kinkajou.

“Carnelian!” Kinkajou cried out. “I told you!”

Carnelian was in shock. The pain. If only I did listen to Moon.

“I’m sorry,” Carnelian said.

“What?” Moon asked. “Why?”

“I didn’t listen to you when you warned me about the explosion,” Carnelian said. “I-”

“No, Carnelian,” Moon interrupted. “I should have been more convincing… Wait, Kinkajou did you-”

“I told her about your powers,” Kinkajou said.

“Yeah, she told me,” Carnelian said.

“That’s why you were apologetic,” Moon observed.

“Now, where were you going?” Kinkajou asked.

“To Turtle,” Moon said. “I think he came from the future too.”

“Do you know who else came from the future?” Carnelian asked.

“Qibli,” Moon said. “Also, Winter and Icicle are gone, so either of them could have come from the future as well.”

“Well, what are we waiting for?” Kinkajou asked. “Let’s go to Turtle.”

Shoutout:

Nobody (yet).

Chapter 5: Chapter 3

Chapter Text

“What brings you here?” Turtle asked the four of them.

“Do you have the bowl?” Qibli asked Turtle.

After Moon, Kinkajou, and Carnelian went out of their cave, they went to Qibli and told him their situation, and he happily came along.

“My bowl?” Turtle asked.

“You have a bowl?” Umber asked. He was in the room too, cuddling Turtle.

Turtle reached inside his pouch and got his bowl.

“What does that do?” Carnelian asked.

Turtle slapped his forehead. “Do you know about the explosion ?”

“It hurt,” Carnelian said.

“Alright,” Turtle said. He pulled his bracelet off his arm. Moon was bombarded with Turtle’s thoughts.

Who else could have come from the future?

When Turtle put the armband on the bowl, he said, “Twice as much, please?”

The armband multiplied into two.

“Woah!” Carnelian and Umber said.

But saying this, Carnelian slit her eyes.

“You never told me you were an animus,” Carnelian hissed.

“Neither did you tell me,” Umber said. “We could have stopped Sora from killing…”

Umber looked at Carnelian with a shameful expression. Carnelian widened her eyes.

“I’m sorry,” Umber said.

“I swear I will-”

“No,” Moon said. “It was my fault for not convincing Carnelian correctly.”

Carnelian sighed. She put her anger aside for this one moment.

“You could have pulled me out,” Carnelian said. “Also, you don’t have to apologize for my stubbornness.”

“You were too heavy,” Moon said.

“Did… you just call me FAT?!” Carnelian said.

“N-No! You’re just bigger than me!” Moon defended.

“She meant, like, you’re built stinger and huger than us, not in a fat way. Just, like, uh, older and taller than us. NOT LIKE AN OLD LADY THO-”

“What she said,” Moon interrupted what Kinkajou had to say.

“Guys,” Turtle interrupted. “We have to get these armbands to those who need them.”

Just like that, everyone got one, including Moon.

“Thanks,” Moon said. “I don’t have to worry about Darkstalker anymore, but I think I’ll have to get used to not reading minds anymore.”

“Wait, so who do you think also came from the future?” Qibli asked. “Because either Icicle or Winter probably did - or even both of them.”

“I have no idea,” Turtle said.

“Well, then,” Qibli said. “We have to use codewords to know-”

Qibli thought of something.

“Right, my grandfather is probably looking through the mirror,” Qibli said.

“What mirror?” Turtle asked.

“Turtle? Can you enchant something to bring the obsidian mirror here?” Qibli asked.

“Why?” Turtle asked.

“Just do it,” Qibli said.

“Fine,” Turtle said. He picked up a pebble. “I enchant this pebble to bring whatever the wielder says to bring.”

“Try it,” Turtle said, giving the pebble to Qibli.

“The obsidian mirror, in Vulture’s possession,” Qibli said.

Just like that, the obsidian mirror appeared in Qibli’s hands.

“Sweet!” Kinkajou said. Kinkajou got the pebble from Qibli’s hand.

“A pineapple!”

And a pineapple appeared on Kinkajou’s hands.

Kinkajou got Turtle’s bowl.

“Twice as much, please?” Kinkajou said.

Then after Kinkajou multiplied the pineapples four times, the room had around sixteen pineapples.

“What do you think you are going to do with that?” Moon asked.

“Shove them on Chameleon’s snout!”

“Fair enough,” Turtle said.

“Wait,” Umber said. “I think I am missing something. Who’s Chameleon?”

“You know your brother’s crush? Peril?” Kinkajou said. “He’s her father. And he’s a traitor to us, RainWings!”

“Not gonna go to details,” Umber said.

“Hey, mirror,” Qibli said. “Show us Winter.”

“You can’t touch that!” a voice shouted.

Moon looked at Qibli, and they thought of the same thing.

Winter went for Hailstorm, who is currently Pyrite as of the moment, and Winter is planning to get Foeslayer, which meant Winter was the one who came from the future.
