Sunlight - Hozier

I would shun the light, share in evening's cool and quiet

Who would trade that hum of night?

Mushroom had a routine. He would wake up, his cap wet with morning dew, and he would stretch his stem as best as he could while being confined to the earth.

Where he lived, earth seemed to be the only thing around him. Amongst the trees, flowers and other fauna of the forest, mushroom fit right in. He used to have a family of his own, but humans had plucked most of them out of the earth in front of his eyes days ago. He wasn’t too sad about it- after all, he was glad someone would have a nice lunch made with them.

Don’t get him wrong, of course he missed them a bit, but he was a mushroom. Meant to be eaten, or to reproduce and make more of each other.

For sunlight, sunlight, sunlight

But whose heart would not take flight?

In his case, mushroom had never seen the appeal in reproduction. Spreading his spores and all of that jazz had never seem like something fun, but that was due to him having cap for a very particular grub that visited him often.

Although grubs lived underground until they turned into beautiful beetles, this one had been more adventurous- intrepid. He had never been able to stay in place for too long, always seeking adventure even with a body suited more so for staying in one place. Grub’s constant need for adventure was one of the reason mushroom had never confessed his love to his good friend. With his inability to move, he knew that asking his friend to sacrifice his craving for adventure only to be with him was selfish. Instead, he would keep it inside of himself and hope that these feelings would pass.

Betray the moon as acolyte

On first and fierce affirming sight

Of sunlight, sunlight, sunlight

They often met at night. Humans tended to be scarce when Lady Moon was high up in the sky, giving them a good opportunity to talk to each other. Always, mushroom would greet the Grub crawling towards him with joy in his voice. And always, Grub would reply with a joyful Hello mushroom! Hope you had a good day today! And they would carry on with their conversation.

They talked about anything that came up to them. Mushroom would tell tales of humans he saw walking around- how some of them had colourful clothing and shiny objects dangling on them. Grub, in exchange, would tell him about his adventures.

“I saw a really cute bug on my way to you, mushroom!”

“Did you? That’s awesome!”

”Yeah! It reminded me of you, with how pretty it was.“

”Me? Pretty? Don't be silly, Grub!”

”I’m not! You’re the prettiest mushroom in this forest!“

“You haven’t seen most of the forest, thought.”

“That’s alright! I just know there’s not a single one as handsome as you.”

Most often than not, they ended up talking for hours, until both of them were too tired to continue. Grub would curl around mushroom’s stem and fall asleep like that, unknowingly of mushroom’s heart beating at 100 kilometres per hour just millimeters away from him. In turn, mushroom went to sleep not knowing of Grub’s love feelings growing each second for him.

I had been lost to you, sunlight

And flew like a moth to you, sunlight, oh, sunlight

The time where one of them slips up with their feelings is surprisingly during morning. Grub’s adventure had dragged on longer than he had anticipated. Wiggling around could only go so fast, and he ended up making it to mushroom’s place of residence only once the sunlight started peaking through the trees, casting a glow on mushroom’s cap.  In that moment, Grub could think of nothing to compare mushroom’s beauty to. And so, as he aproached mushroom, he did not let the other say his usual good morning. Instead, he cut him off as he wiggled closer to him.

“You’re my sunlight.”

Mushroom tilted his stem at him, the morning dew rolling off his cap before splattering into the ground.

“Sunlight?” Mushroom answered.

Realizing what he said, Grub only hesitated for a second before letting his go of his feelings after so long.

“Yeah, sunlight. Every time I see you, I get..warm inside. I think you are a million- no- a thousand times prettier than Lady Moon. I would take the risk of getting stepped on by a human any day if it meant being able to see you more.” Grub rambled on, not being able to stop himself. His feelings towards his friend were finally able to make themselves known, and he would make sure not to stop in the middle.

“You’re my entire world, mushroom. Every day, I wiggle to you and you tell me about things you’ve seen and It makes me happier. You’re might sunlight, mushroom, and I would wiggle for a million kilometres if it meant being with you.”

Oh, your love is sunlight

Oh, your love is sunlight

Mushroom was stunned. His friend, loving him back? If almost seemed like a dream! He quickly gathered his thoughts, not wanting to let Grub think for a second that he did not love him back.

“Grub..I’ve been feeling the same way for so long! I..When I hear you talk about your day and your adventures, it makes me wish I could move. I’d travel the world with you if I could, but.. I cant.” Mushroom ended his sentence by looking past Grub, to the wide wilderness around them.

“This is the reason I kept my feelings hidden, Grub. Are you sure this is what you want? You’re so full of adventure and I cannot move..”

Grub wiggled closer to mushroom, wrapping his body around his stem in a warm hug.

“I’d give up anything if it meant being with you.”

But it is sunlight.
