Chapter Text
Jaune to Joan
Author's Note: This fic will be a trans Jaune (She/Her) fic. The first handful of chapters will misgender and deadname her, but only because this story will pick up before her transition. That said, this fic will be rather dark. It will include torture, it will include Cinder taunting Jaune (soon to be Joan) for her gender presentation. If you crave to skip right to Joan and the development of her realizing she is a her and not a he, then go ahead and read the first chapter and skip chapter 2 and 3. Chapter 4 is where the building of the introduction of Joan officially begins. Either way, hope you enjoy!
Chapter 1
"I'm sorry." She whispered as her arms tenderly wrapped around him.
"I- wha-" Jaune stammered only to be cut short by her lips against his. Hopeless, and completely blindsided, he kissed back. Stupidly, he even let his eyelids fall shut in the moment's serenity. Explosions of the White Fang, the hacked machines, and the students colliding crackled around them, but all Jaune could feel was Pyrrha's lips and the warm way her hands embraced.
"Go, get help." She replied while Jaune was still completely stunned by the embrace and kiss.
"I- no, Pyrrha-" Jaune tried to protest, but found himself kicked into one of the weapons storage lockers before he could protest any further.
"Go." She whispered before kicking it on and launching him into the sky
"No! No! No! Pyrrha! You can't do this! No! I-" Jaune panicked and pounded on the door to the weapons cache Pyrrha had trapped him in. Helpless, Jaune watched and fought with the door Pyrrha's semblance locked with ease. "No! No, you can't! Cinder is mad! She'll kill you, I-" Jaune screamed as he watched Pyrrha turn back and run after the madwoman. She would die! No! No! He- he couldn't let- Jaune's raging stopped as he spotted a loose point in the cage he'd been trapped in. Where the weapon's cache and the door didn't quite meet; a crack, just enough to wedge his sword in. Acting more on instinct than on intelligent thought or any realistic idea of what he could do to help, Jaune jammed his sword in the crack and leveraged it with all his strength.
Pushing and forcing the door, Jaune tumbled right out of the rocketing cache. Jaune was free! He was free, and falling right out of the sky. Terror flashed through Jaune as he panicked for what to do, how to land, where to land! "No, no, no, n- Pyrrha!" Jaune screamed again, spotting the love of his life and the murderous woman drawing a bow, ready to end her.
Jaune had done this before. His first day at Beacon, he remembered flying through the air certain he would die. That day Pyrrha saved him. Maybe now he could save her. Charging up his aura as intensely as he could, Jaune pointed directly between them and prayed. Maybe he could survive the fall- if he couldn't… well, then he'd be giving Pyrrha another chance.
Jaune braced, placed his shield between himself and the rapidly approaching building. With all the strength he simply tensed and awaited the-
The feeling of wet warmth trickled from Jaune's ear and forehead. He could tell that the arm that once held his shield was now shattered in several different places. Passively, beyond the fuzziness of everything around him, he knew it hurt, or that it should. Between his aura and adrenaline, he couldn't quite feel it. To his right, Cinder stood, her bow shattered on the ground as she tried to rub the rubble out of her bright burning eyes. To the right, Pyrrha. She held her shield up and began to lower it- were… were her eyes-
"You fucking brats." Cinder shattered what remained of the bow in her hand only to reform it and lower her aim to Jaune. "I am done dealing with any of you- especially, pesky, little, vomit, boy." Jaune felt sick; sick in a way painfully appropriate for his nickname, though that could easily have been excused away with the fact that the bones of his right arm were completely shattered.
Jaune's head continued to spin and so it seemed did his vision. Cinder, Pyrrha, Cinder, Pyrrha, burning eyes, the beautiful green he fell in love with, burning eyes, burning green… A bow- and arrow- a shield- a sword. An arrow, strung and pointed at- Jaune lurched, trying to take up Cinder's focus, but he already had it. The pain of the searing arrow burned through his chest at what felt like the same moment it had been released. He cried and screamed. The arrow cut through all that blurred the other pain and seared through Jaune's core. Idly, he could hear the familiar clang of Pyrrha's shield as it collided with someone's skull.
"No, no, no, come on. Jaune, Jaune, stay with me. Right here! Stay with me!" Pyrrha's soft voice coaxed as timid hands lifted his head up. "Come on, come on Jaune- Jaune please! Please stay- don't- I- I love you!." Pyrrha pleaded.
"I- uugh… there's ah… an arro- n' mi-"
"Shh, shh, don't talk, she… she did something to it- I- I have to take it out and-"
"You, insufferable BRATS!" Cinder screamed at the same moment the arrow was removed and a new searing pain shot through Jaune's chest.
Jaune was vaguely sure he screamed out his pain again, but aside from that, all he could decipher as his vision grew dark was Cinder drawing another arrow aimed for Pyrrha- one likely to kill her, a blinding light, and then nothing.
