Work Text:

Every time a new relationship is formed, it always means that those in that relationship need to somehow combine their traditions, needs, wants and desires. So when Isak and Even have their first own Christmas, it means that there needs to be some compromises. When Even thinks back, he remembers fondly of their road to this day, the day where they have their little family and are going to host their first bigger Christmas party. Like always, all of their friends and their partners and kids are coming, but this time they are going to come on Christmas Eve and spend the whole day with them, to eat and just chill around the Christmas tree.

Before their relationship Isak didn’t have many good memories of Christmas. When his dad was still home, Christmas was the time when they tried to act like a happy family but failed. There may not have been fighting but the atmosphere was rigid and tense. So having good memories from their Christmas together has been very important to Isak, he wanted to create new traditions, new memories to replace the ones he doesn’t want to remember anymore. This is the first year they are living together so it’s the first year they’re making their own christmas. Yes, the squads are coming to hang with them but mostly it’s about them, just the two.

Even would have never thought that Isak would be so determined on things like how the Christmas tree is decorated. Or what kind of a tree they should get. They walk around the trees at the market for a long, long time, because nothing meets Isak’s criteria. Either the trees are too high, too skinny, too fat, too whatever, but nothing is perfect. Even would have loved the first tree they looked at but no, it was a disaster according to Isak. But as a good boyfriend, Even follows Isak, but makes sure that he knows how Even is feeling about this by huffing and puffing and rolling his eyes. Even just wants a tree they can decorate! It can’t be this difficult, can it? But it seems it can.

After almost two hours they actually have a tree. Even is pretty sure it’s the first one they saw, but he knows better than to mention that to Isak. Now they just need to get the thing home. Which is not as easy as you’d think. Traveling with a quite large Christmas tree on a tram is not the easiest thing they have done, and some words are said with a big voice, but they make it. And Even must admit, the tree is perfect when it’s in their living room’s corner. Not too big, not too small, not too thick or skinny.

Even knows how important this is to his boyfriend so he is doing anything he can to make this a good one. And he wants that too, he wants to have traditions and memories with the man of his life. So he might have gone a bit overboard with the gift shopping, just a bit. Isak will be horrified when he realises how much money Even has actually spent on him, but Even won’t mind. Isak is worth every cent. And it can’t be his fault that the perfect ideas just kept on coming and Even had to buy all of them!

Watching Isak now decorating the tree makes Even’s heart flutter. His man, his love, his everything. The boy who didn’t care for Christmas is now making sure that the three has decorations evenly on every side, and that the special ornament they bought is clearly visible on the front of the tree. They made a deal that Isak would do the decorating and he would do the cooking.

Which makes Even think again about the shopping trip to the grocery store that they need to do tomorrow. He is making a list in his head and he knows that he needs to also write it down, because he won’t remember everything. Since there will be so many of them, they need a lot of food. And then there are some things he needs to keep in mind like Sana’s and Yousef’s baby who turned just two and the secret Eva shared with him. He needs to make sure that there are things on the table that a pregnant woman can eat, as Eva is expecting her and Jonas’s first born.

When the time to unwrap the gifts comes, Isak hands a big, clumsily wrapped box to Even. It’s suspiciously light. Even opens the box just to find it full of paper. He starts pulling the paper out and as a grown man, throws it around, just a bit frustrated because he doesn’t find anything else than that damn paper!

“Honey, you may not want to do that,” he hears Isak saying close to his ear.

“Why? Is there some paper I don’t want to lose?”

Instead of answering, Isak just hums and turns a bit red. And that is the exact moment that Even finds the certain paper he doesn’t want to lose. It’s a black and white picture, a weird one, it looks like an X-ray of several spines and heads and he has absolutely no idea what it is.

“Did you get me a picture of baby aliens?”

“No, although I know you love that movie.”

It takes Even a while to realise what he is looking at.

“Is this..Babe..Oh my god. You didn’t?!” Everyone else is looking at either Isak or Even, not following at all and being very puzzled.

“Well one of you better tell us what this is about!” Mags says enthusiastically.

“Babe, do you want to tell them or will I do it?” Isak asks Even.

“WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A BABY!!!” Even yells while waving the x-ray picture. Which makes everyone first stare at them in disbelief and then, when they get it, cheer out loud. They’re getting a puppy.

“ I thought that we talked that this might not be the time for a baby?” Even asks Isak with a small voice. The fall has been horrible and Even is a bit scared he won’t be able to take care of a puppy.

“We did, but then I got a text from the breeder that they’re having a litter and I just couldn’t say no when she asked would we be interested in one. So merry Christmas, babe!” Even kisses Isak and smiles that radiating smile he smiles that makes his eyes squint.

“You're not alone! We’re also having a baby!” Eva suddenly all but screams. Everyone turns to look at her and Jonas who are radiating about the fact that they’re going to be parents. The room is filled with smiles and congratulations. A merry Christmas indeed.
