Work Text:
Yoshi lights up the third to the last of the fireworks he brought in the beach house he rented for him and the person he promises his forever to. *Boom* and sparkles of different arrays of multihued speckles momentarily brightens up the void of the moonless sky where nothing can be seen, not even stars, which reflects on the irises of his eyes. Darkness engulfs them again except for the dull orange light from the porch meters behind.
“Love, you see that darkness? That was my life before and –” he lights up another fireworks which fleetingly brightens the skies again “-- that’s when you came to me and brightened it up and I want you to be the one to forever be the light of my life, Love.” He looks at the person beside him and sees Yedam, his soon-to-be fiance, smiling at him. He holds his hands and kisses it.
Then unexpectedly, a single shooting star appears.
“Love, let’s make a wish.”
He closes his eyes and wishes.
“What did you wish for, Love?” Yedam asks.
“Hey, you cannot tell anyone your wish or it won’t come true.”
Yedam just smiles again and leans his head on the older’s shoulder while hugging his right arm.
‘Love, you know that I really really love you and I can’t go on living without you. You are the only reason I’m living for right now since I don’t have anyone else but you, Love.”
Yoshi goes on.
“Remember that time when my mom and dad died in that accident and you were the only one who did not leave my side. You took care of me even and got me back on my feet even when I really wanted to give up and stop living. And when that damn company fired me for something that I never did. You always know when I need you the most and mend my broken heart.”
He looks at the person beside him again and tears escape his eyes as he sees the love of his life, his almost forever, fading away. Then it dawns on him that Yedam is no longer there with him.
A week ago he died from an accident where his car fell down a cliff when he was coming home from a party from a mountain resort. Rescuers suspected that he was not familiar with the path so he did not notice the sudden turn and it may be too late for him to step on the brakes.
Yoshi was already sleeping when he received the news and arrived at the scene only to find Yedam’s lifeless body already cold.
Yoshi looks again at the void, tears rushing down his face.
“Love, will you marry me?”
But nobody is there to answer him “Yes”.
Nobody is there to calm his broken heart, and to tell him to go on living again because the very person who knows what to say and will help get him back on his feet is already six feet deep. How will he be able to survive this pain?
His tears are now endless.
“Love, you know what I wished for when that shooting star appeared?” he says out loud because there’s no point of keeping it to himself when he knows no amount of shooting stars matters. He knows there’s no possibility that his wish will come true.
“I wished that I could take you home. I wished that I could cook you breakfast every morning or spend lunch breaks with you. I wished that we could visit again the places where our memories are forever kept or places that we’ve never been to make more. I wished that God would give us another chance to be together and that he would bring you back. I wished that I could marry you and spend this lifetime with you, Love, because you are my one and only.”
Yoshi lights up the last of the fireworks that he brought, the fireworks that were supposed to be the ending scene to his proposal in this beach house that he rented for both him and his supposed soon-to-be fiance on this very day.
The sky sparkles and there he sees Yedam brightly smiling down at him, slowly disappearing like a firework that came to momentarily illuminate his life.
His knees give out and he shouts cries of agony.
And the empty void engulfs him again.
