Chapter Text

Sasuke watched as his little daughter was sucking on one of her toys. Naruto, Kakashi and everybody probably went overboard with all the gifts because now she had so many which they had no idea what to do with.

“Sarada, don’t put it in your mouth.” He pulled her hand down and in response, she smiled clapping her hands and giggling. Who would have thought he would be a father to such a sweet innocent girl? Sasuke would do his best to protect her with his life but one thing which haunts him is if she’ll suffer due to his past actions.

Both she and Sakura. Sure his wife tries to reassure him that everything would be fine but not everyone was as forgiving as she and Naruto.

Sasuke then took Sarada's favourite rattle and began shaking it, her eyes gleamed and she put the toy down watching what he was doing.

“See?” She stared at it for a bit reaching out and taking it. Just as Sasuke thought she knew what she was doing when Sarada shook it, she began suckling on the rattle instead. A big grin on her face.

He sighed, ruffling her hair. She’ll grow out of it.

Sakura was sleeping on the sofa, he wanted to give her a break so offered to look after Sarada for the day. It should be a simple task but it didn’t help when she would sometimes go crawling over to her Mama wanting attention.

“Sarada,” Sasuke made sure to keep quiet but also stern so Sarada knew not to disturb Sakura. The girl was standing, holding onto the sofa for support.

“Mama’s sleeping, she needs her rest.”

Sarada looked up to where her Mama was and back at Sasuke. The sofa was really big so without help, she wouldn’t be able to reach her.

Uh oh, her lips were trembling. She really wanted her Mama. He began to panic and looked around the room hoping for some idea. Spotting his cloak which Sarada seemed to love so much for some reason.

He took it off the table and put it on top of his head so it was almost like a tent.

“Sarada look," Sasuke cooed trying to encourage his daughter to crawl over to him.

She stopped pouting, eyes bright and carefully plopped herself down so she could crawl over and sit on Sasuke’s lap. His cloak was comforting, she took hold of an empty sleeve and began putting it in her mouth.

But wasn't very tasty.

“Sarada, not again,” he took and gently pried the sleeve off her but Sarada was determined and kept taking it back. It was almost like a little tug of war but seeing as she was so small he had to be careful not to be too rough. The girl finally got tired of playing and yawned lightly toppling over his lap making herself comfortable.

Her big eyes looked at him, little hands in the air as she spoke.

“Ah aah.”

“Are you trying to say, Papa?” He let out a soft smile letting her hold on to his fingers.

“Ah… aaah.” Nothing but baby sounds came out of her mouth but she was trying.

As expected of our daughter. After all, both he and Sakura were stubborn so it was natural for her to be too and wanting to get it right.

Sarada yawned again and was asleep in no time.

When she opened her eyes, she noticed she was leaning on her Papa's shoulders. Since Sasuke knew Sarada would want to feed when she woke up, he carefully picked up his daughter so as not to disturb her and prepped her food.

But usually, feeding time was spending quality time with Mama so the girl made a fuss trying to get out of his grasp.

“There there Sarada, look I have your food.” Sarada made a pouting face and looked over his shoulder to where she could see Sakura trying to reach out.

Unfortunately having one arm was difficult to keep hold of a baby. Especially when the said baby was fussy.

He pushed out the high chair with his leg and placed Sarada in it. Her arms were folded, well she attempted to fold them. A frown across her features knowing she was now trapped giving Sasuke a 'death glare'

“Don’t look at me like that, you’re just a little cranky from being hungry. Here, open up.” Sarada turned her face around refusing to eat.

“Sarada,” Sasuke warned, she dodged the food again.

He sighed, placing the spoon down. As adorable as she looked Sarada could certainly be devious.

Didn’t Sakura assure him saying she’ll be a little Daddy’s girl? That certainly wasn’t the case here when it was clearly obvious that she wanted Sakura’s attention. Or maybe babies were just fickle in wanting the parent that was busy, hmm that seemed about right.

The doorbell rang and he was tempted to ignore it but knowing only one other person would bother them he decided to go answer. Saving for Sakura to wake up.

“You stay here.” Well duh, where else was Sarada going to go? She still gave him a glare watching him leave.

“Yo Sasuke,” Naruto beamed. Little Boruto clinging onto his shirt sucking on his thumb.

“Keep quiet, Sakura’s sleeping.”

“Eh? Don’t you usually have to be quiet because the baby is sleeping? Not the parent.” Sasuke glared at the blonde. He really was an idiot.

“I’m trying to give Sakura some time off.”

“Oh, what a coincidence. So am I, why don’t we walk around. I'm sure Sakura-chan won't mind.”

That actually wouldn't be a bad idea, except for one thing.

“I need to get Sarada to eat first but she's being cranky.”

“Well, today's your lucky day bas- uh Sasuke. Because I'm an expert.”

Just what he needed. More loud children. Still what else could he do? The sooner Sarada could eat they could go out and he'll be able to keep Sarada distracted for the rest of the day.

“Fine, but you have to be quiet, remember Sakura is sleeping. That includes Boruto too.”

“Okay, okay I get it.” Naruto hushed and looked down at his son.

“You hear that little buddy. We have to be quiet.” Naruto put a finger to his lips and Boruto copied. Not that he really understood what was going on.

“See he gets it.” Sasuke rolled his eyes.

“Whatever, don't make any loud noise.”

“So tell me, how are you going to get my dear daughter to eat?” Sasuke asked as the two went into the kitchen, she still had her arms crossed face turned away.

Naruto gave a smirk, he knew exactly what to do.

“Well, I happen to know a secret. Thanks to Shikamaru that is. Did you know that babies can get quite territorial with their food? All I have to do is give some to Boruto.” Sarada’s eye peeked open, watching Naruto suspiciously as the strange man took hold of her spoon from her bowl.

What was he doing?

“Here Boruto say ah,” little Boruto looked down at the spoon of food. His eyes brightened and he opened his mouth to eat.

Immediately Sarada’s face fell, her arms out making cooing sounds wanting the food. She turned to look at her Papa as if to say ‘are you really going to let this happen?’

“Oh so now your hungry?” He didn’t think Naruto’s plan would actually work but now Sarada was on the verge of tears which wasn’t what he wanted. If she cried now then she’ll wake up Sakura.

“Naruto,” Sasuke growled taking another spoon from the drawer to feed Sarada with.

“What? She’s eating right?”

“You almost made her cry. What if she woke up Sakura?”

“Oh… right. Hehe,” he sweatdropped. “But hey, at least she’s eating now.” Naruto pointed out when Sarada happily opened her mouth accepting the food Sasuke was giving her. He gave a hmp in response watching her happily munch away.

Why couldn't kids be so simple?

“Ah ah,” Boruto pouted pointing to his mouth.

“Oh, you want some more?” He nodded his little head. “Uh hey Sasuke, I don’t suppose-”

“There’s some more left in the cupboard.”

“Thanks, buddy, I swear I fed him earlier.”

After the kids were fed they allowed Boruto and Sarada to talk and play together for a while. Both were making up words that they couldn’t understand but it seemed like they were able to talk to one another.

Sarada was shaking the rattle Sasuke had earlier showing Boruto how to do it. She was a fast learner, he'll give her that.

“Do you really think they can understand each other? It’s like they’re talking gibberish.”

“Shouldn’t you be able to understand them then? Your good at that.”

“Oh haha, this is the thanks I get for helping you out earlier.”

“Anyway, why don’t we go to the park. We’ll be able to tire them out once we get back.”

“Ah.”

“Something wrong?” Naruto noticed Sasuke looking off. He kept zoning in and out. Whether or not the Uchiha noticed though, he wasn't sure.

“I thought I would be able to figure it out by now.”

“Figure out what?”

“How to take care of Sarada. I’m her father, shouldn’t I be able to know what she wants. Keep her entertained without Sakura?” It was hard to feel like he did enough when Sarada would constantly go back to Sakura. She did a lot for their daughter and whilst Sasuke did more than his fair share of help it never felt like enough.

It was an insecurity he couldn't get over.

“Hey, we’re still learning. Even Hinata struggles with Boruto sometimes, I’m sure Sakura-chan does too. It’s not like we just magically know how to be parents.”

That makes sense. If only it was easy to get over.

“Besides, don't like babies have a special connection with their mothers?”

“Connection?”

“Yeah, you know. They have to rely on them more for food and all. I don't know something like that, I read it somewhere.” Naruto shrugged, finger on chin trying to recall where he heard it from.

“Besides, Sarada loves you as much as Sakura-Chan. When she and Hinata-chan hanged out, Hinata said Sarada suddenly started making a fuss. Apparently, she spotted us walking by and she was trying to reach out to you.” Naruto laughed.

“She probably gets that from you, you know pretending not to care but secretly does.”

“You were doing just fine until saying that,” Sasuke smirked, he briefly recalled Sakura mentioning it before and Sarada wouldn't leave him alone for the rest of the day.

“Serves you right! That's what you get for not being grateful. But have you spoken to Sakura-chan about this? If you are that worried, I'm sure she would be able to give you better advice than me. She has plenty of experience and I'm sure she had some troubles too.”

Sasuke didn't consider that. All the kids loved her but maybe there were a few who were trickier to handle.

“Uh Sasuke... where's Sarada?”

What?

He turned around but only Boruto was there. He seemed to be looking for Sarada too.

“Boruto, where did Sarada-chan go?” Naruto tried to ask as Sasuke went frantic searching in the house.

The door was locked so she wouldn't have gotten out and how fast could a baby travel?

Boruto motioned with his hands, shaking his little fist and then waving his hand about. Almost like saying 'she just disappeared' But that couldn't be, right?

“Where is she?”

When Sarada looked around, she couldn’t see her parents anywhere. No Papa, Mama, or even little Boruto who she made friends. She was by herself with nothing but trees in sight.

She gripped the rattle which she was still holding onto, eyes widen looking frantically around. There had to be someone right? Anyone? Sarada tried to make a noise but all that came out were baby sounds which were too quiet for anyone to hear.

Tears started to fall and Sarada screamed crying.

She wanted her parents, this place was too scary and she was all by herself. What happened to them? Did she get lost?

The bush in front started rustling and Sarada froze expecting a big scary monster to appear but instead, it was a strange boy.

“What the-” the stranger came closer and now that she got a good look at him he looked exactly like her Papa. A small version but it was definitely him. Immediately she started smiling, arms out wanting to be carried.

“Where did you come from?” He picked up the baby looking around for any parents or adults. How did she get all the way out here? Sasuke had been training nearby until he heard the sounds of wailing. It was a strange sound out here in the training ground, or rather close to it.

His first thought was that maybe someone in danger but a baby… all the way out here? Maybe there is a chance the parents left her here to hide and come back... unless something happened to them.

Wouldn’t the village be aware of the situation then?

Sarada cosied herself up to him, he was wearing a strange blue shirt which she had never seen before but it was definitely her Papa's scent and that was enough for her.

Awkwardly he patted the girl's head. She didn’t seem to care about stranger danger. But then what baby would?

“Why do I always get myself into these situations?” He couldn’t just leave her here. Perhaps the best idea would be to take her to the Hokage and leave it with him. They could send out posters or ninjas to scatter the area to find any hidden clues.

Guess training would have to wait for a while.

At least that was the plan until he caught sight of the crest on her back and froze.

Was that the Uchiha crest?

She looked up at him giving a small smile, she did look like an Uchiha but that would be impossible. Itachi had-

Anger and frustration swelled up inside the Uchiha. That bastard had killed everyone, how was it possible for anyone to live. Let alone a baby.

Given her age, it would be impossible for her to be related and yet her appearance and crest said otherwise.

Was it some kind of joke? A sick twisted joke someone set on him? No one could be that cruel.

Tiny hands touched his face bringing him out of his dark thoughts. Almost like she knew he needed someone and was letting him know she was right here. She was so small and innocent.

And an open target, if the baby was an Uchiha then Sasuke couldn't just leave her be. He would have to protect her.

At least until he figured out his next plan of action.

Maybe she still had a parent out there worried sick, maybe they were both gone? Regardless something inside told him to protect her no matter what.

Who would have thought a day of training would lead to this.

The girl suddenly made a face, her nose was scrunched up with a look of concentration. Sasuke wasn't sure what to do.

Until the smell hit.

“Don't tell me...”

A look of relief washed over her features and he glared at her putting her at arm's length. Great.

She just giggled in response waving her legs.

This was going to be a long day.

A baby store.

He was going into… a baby store.

Sasuke could already feel eyes on him, it was a small shop but should have everything he need for her. And given how stinky she was now he needed to get her changed as soon as possible.

I doubt they’ll be happy.

All he had to do was quickly go in, get some nappies and other baby stuff and leave.

Simple.

He was thankful to have been paying attention to his mother when she would look after their younger cousins.

Sasuke would do his best to help as much as he could and always paid attention to the details. He didn't really know how to change a baby but he was able to feed them.

Hopefully, the knowledge was still there.

Sasuke looked down at the gremlin.

“Let’s get you cleaned up.” It seemed like all she knew was to smile and laugh. Oh yeah, laugh it up now why don’t you? Tch. He had summoned a clone to do the shopping. Until he got the items there was nothing he could do.

Thankfully not many people were in.

He just walked by briskly along with the clone, holding up Sarada awkwardly. She was mesmerised by all the different items and talking to him.

Not that he could understand a single word.

The woman on the till covered her nose up when they approached but her eyes soften at the baby and poor boy.

“Let me guess, a babysitting mission.” She chuckled lightly checking his items.

“There’s a room in the back there if you want to go clean her up first. If you don’t she’ll get a rash, I’ll save your items here and you can pay afterwards.” Sasuke thanked the woman, taking some of the baby items with him so that he could clean up Sarada.

“Of course, besides you are stinking up my store.”

Once inside the room, he placed Sarada down taking a deep breath. “You better not cause any more trouble.” Again, all she did was giggle and laugh. Perhaps she really was laughing at him finding this whole ordeal amusing.

Why didn’t I just leave her for someone else to find?

It would have been more practical if an adult who knew what they were doing found her.

The smell was atrocious but it needed to be done. Sarada wouldn’t stop moving her legs and arms about.

“Lay still,” she stuck her tongue out instead, laughing again at his expression. She knew what she was doing.

Now that the difficult part was out of the way next came the easy one.

Or so he thought, Sasuke kept switching it around.

Which way is it supposed to go?

He kept looking at the nappy and then back at her. Ah, he'll just have to guess.

He can only imagine how this looks to everyone else. If Naruto caught him like this he would never hear the end of it.

“Not bad.” Finally, she was all cleaned up now, Sarada clapped her little hands. She could be cute when she wasn’t smelling so badly.

“Let’s get the rest of your stuff and leave.” The sooner the better.

He was about to go back up to the till until a baby carrier caught his interest. It may be easier to carry her with.

Sarada had her head resting on his shoulders for now but it will do for later.

The lady had everything ready so he paid for the items anxious to leave.

“Thank you again,” he bowed politely. She did save him. “Come again anytime.”

I’d rather not.

Until he had his own kids at least. Which won't be happening for a long while hopefully.

With one hand carrying the bags and in his arm with Sarada who had now taken an interest in nibbling his clothing.

“It’s no wonder your parents gave you up.”

He smiled fondly down at her, there was still the trouble in finding out where she came from. If she was safe, did Itachi know about her?

Because if he did, maybe it was best for her to stay with him.

“Sasuke-Kun!”

Oh crap.

Sarada’s ears perked up at the familiar voice. Her head peeked out from his shoulder wanting to see Mama but Sasuke had quickly shot up on the roof making a dash for it.

“Sas- oh… I thought I saw him a moment ago…” Sakura deflated, just when she thought they could have some alone time.

“Ah ah aaaah.” Sarada kept whining struggling from his grip. Why did he run away from Mama?

She was right there.

“I’m not letting my teammates see me with you. Sorry.” Why was he apologising to a baby? It wasn’t like she understood him.

He probably shouldn't have run off like that though. At least with her, it must have been scary.

Sarada's eyes were filled with tears which caught Sasuke off guard.

He must have really scared her.

“Don’t cry-”

Too late, she had started bawling.

“Look I’m sorry, I don’t know what else you want from me.” They had managed to make it back to his place without anyone else catching them but she was still upset.

He couldn’t find any injuries so didn’t understand why she was still crying.

And she wouldn't eat either.

All Sarada had wanted however was her Mama. She heard her soothing voice, could recognise it anywhere.

Why did Papa have to be mean?

“I don’t know what-” An idea hit him. There was a 50% chance it wouldn’t work but what harm could it do?

“Look, do you want this?” Sasuke held out his favourite dinosaur plushie. It stopped him from crying when he was scared or upset, whether it would be the same for her was another matter.

“Ga gaa!" Her arms reached out for it and cuddled it. The plushie was a bit... big in comparison to her but she was happy.

He sighed with relief, at least he managed to stop her from crying.

“I wonder what I should name you?” It would be stupid to refer to her as ‘baby’ and he had the feeling she would be here for a while.

A long while.

So far so good, she hadn’t been crying since they came back. Far too distracted from playing with Mr Dinosaur. If you consider drooling and attempting to eat it playing that is. Sasuke would pry it away from her mouth, taking the plush and trying to teach her how to 'play' but she would go back to doing her usual. It couldn’t be helped.

He was still trying to come up with names and figure out what to do with the little one.

On one hand, he knew logically he should bring her to the Hokage office or maybe even Kakashi and they could take it from there. But a selfish part of him wanted to be the one to protect her, she was an Uchiha like him. At least, that’s what it looked like, even if it was impossible his mind kept rationalising. Still, on the slim chance she was, he didn’t want to leave her on her own for the rest to take care of.

They were both in the same boat. And if he couldn't protect his own family he could at least protect her.

Plus if Itachi knew about this baby, there was a good chance he would come looking and perhaps Sasuke could use it to his advantage.

“Kyaaa!” She threw the plushie laughing when it bounced lightly.

Anything amused her. He was sitting on the sofa watching Sarada on the floor.

Maybe she had a nametag on her clothes… okay perhaps not. I mean who would do that to a baby.

So what should he call her?

The Uchiha wasn't even a people person who socialised let alone know how to take care of or even name a baby.

He knew his mother had always wanted a daughter.

His thoughts drifted to her, what would she name the baby? Mikoto did have some baby name lists for him and Itachi. Both boys and girls since they weren't sure of their gender but Sasuke never listened to those types of conversations.

What five-year-old would?

If only he was stronger, he could have protected them.

Sarada then crawled over passing the plush to Sasuke. He was a bit confused until he realised she noticed him staring off into space. Maybe since it stopped her from crying, she thought the same would happen to him. Or cheer him up.

“Uh, thanks?” He wasn’t sure what else to say but Sarada just smiled and crawled elsewhere.

“Now where are you going?” She had been distracted with the cuddly toy since they got here so something else must have grabbed her attention.

And much to his dismay, she was heading right where the photos were.

“Don’t-” she kept going and then tried to stand up using the wall for balance so she could reach her arms out. Unfortunately, it wasn't a stable table so the frame ended up falling when she leaned her entire body on it.

Quick on his feet, he managed to yank her away with one arm and catch the frame before it hit the ground.

Whoever said being a shinobi didn't pay off?

“Be careful!” His tone was harsh. She didn’t pay any mind or cared but kept making grabby hands towards the photo he was carrying. What a reckless baby.

Why did she care so much about it?

“Is this what you wanted?” The photo in question was of the recent Team 7 one. They took this photo about a week about so he wondered why she was so fascinated by it.

“They are my teammates. My annoying teammates and lazy sensei.” He sat back down with Sarada on his lap. “I’m sure you would all get along.” Considering how much hell she was already putting him through.

It hadn’t even been a day yet.

Her hand kept hitting and pointing to Sakura and she looked up at him blabbing away.

“Gah gah!”

Translation: ‘look there’s Mama’

Sasuke’s eyebrows furrowed. Maybe he was starting to go crazy but it seemed like she was trying to tell him something.

“Sakura?” He pointed and she nodded clapping away. Then turned back to look at the photo.

“You know Sakura?” Her small hands were gently placed on the picture and she started baby talking again.

Was it possible for them to be related? Maybe they were cousins...

No that wouldn’t be it, for starters. Sakura didn’t have any Aunts or Uncles. Kakashi had wanted them to get to know each other better so they sat at Ichiraku Ramen taking turns to ask questions.

“So Sakura-Chan, do you have a big family?” Naruto asked eating his second bowl.

“Not really, it’s just me and my parents. My mother was an only child and so was my father.”

“I think they did plan on having another child but it wasn’t to be I guess.”

“Gee, that sucks.”

“It does but who knows maybe they would have been as annoying as you.”

“Hey! I’m not that bad.” He looked at Sasuke and Kakashi for support but they stayed silent smirking.

“You're all mean to me.” Naruto pouted.

Okay so maybe they weren’t cousins or related but that didn’t mean they couldn’t know each other right?

Maybe she was a family friend’s daughter and was able to recognise Sakura because of her hair…

Yeah perhaps not, that still didn't answer the question of why she had the Uchiha symbol on her back.

A baby.

With an Uchiha symbol.

And who knew Sakura?

Nothing was adding up.

Little Sarada stopped talking now turning her head to smile. Like she knew something. Sasuke on the other hand tried to put all the small clues together.

Then it clicked.

Yes, that made perfect sense.

She didn't recognise Sakura, not in a way she thinks that is. But maybe Sakura reminded her of her own mother.

Pink was an unusual hair colour so of course, she would mistake Sakura for someone she knew.

“I get it now. She looks like your own Mama doesn’t she?” Sarada let out a huff annoyed. How did Papa not get that was Mama.

Papa must be really stupid. It was no wonder Mama would tell him off all the time.

He didn't notice she was unhappy though, more like satisfied with his own conclusion. How was she going to get to Mama now?

Notes:

Finally uploaded the first chapter yay. I really enjoy and love writing this.

Everything here is just so cute and full of fluff, there's no 'pressure' for me to overthink or make it the perfect story. Just writing cuteness.

Chapter Text

Time went by and the two had fallen asleep on the couch. When he woke up, Sasuke had almost forgotten that she was there.

I wonder if she's hungry. He made sure to pick a few baby food in case there was something she didn't like.

She really did look cute and innocent when she wasn't causing trouble.

How was he going to manage the rest of the week?

“Well, well. Isn’t this interesting.” A voice piped in.

“Kakashi? How did you…”

“Hmm, I overhead some things in the village. The last Uchiha with a baby. Naturally, I had to check up on my student.” Sasuke wouldn't bother to ask how he got in. Kakashi was a Jōnin.

“You should have told us Sasuke.”

“But… she’s an Uchiha.” It was his responsibility. “Is she though?” He’ll admit that there were similarities in how they look but that was it.

“Where did you find her?”

“At the training grounds.”

“And you think it’s safe to keep her here?”

“I’ll keep her safe, I promise I will.” He didn’t know why he was begging but he wouldn’t let Kakashi take her away. The Jōnin sighed and looked fondly at the sleeping baby.

“You should really let us adults do the job.”

“Says the sensei who's always late for everything.”

“Everyone’s late now and then.” Kakashi ignored the snide remark.

“I understand you may feel personally responsible. But we don’t know where she came from or who her parents are. What if this is a trap?” Sasuke's grip on her tightened.

“I can handle it.”

“Sasuke. You can't just keep a random baby.”

“Even if there is a small chance she’s an Uchiha… I have to take it don't I?”

“And if she’s not?” Said baby let out a cute snore resting peacefully on Sasuke's tummy.

“Well, she’s already grown attached to me. Are you really going to try and pry her off me?”

“I didn’t think you were that much of a soft touch but okay have it your way. I’m making this a team mission then.”

“I told you I can handle it.” He stood up from the sofa heading towards the kitchen still carrying the sleeping Sarada. Those two would only just get in the way.

“Sasuke, you have teammates. If you won’t let the Hokage or Jōnin handle this. Why not count on them?”

“Because I have everything under control and like you said she’s my responsibility. No one else’s.” He really was stubborn but fine, so be it.

“Taking care of a baby is a lot of hard work.”

“I'll manage.”

“Alright, but you know where we are if you need us.”

At most Kakashi will give him a week, but he knew Sasuke would need their help.

Tch he didn’t need any assistance and certainly not from Naruto and Sakura anyway.

What use would they be? Naruto can hardly look after himself, how would the blonde of all people know how to take care of her? And Sakura… well maybe she might know a thing or two but still, he could handle it on his own.

If the baby really was an Uchiha then he would take full responsibility. No question.

This would be a piece of cake.

How hard could taking care of one baby be?

Little did Sasuke know how he was about to find out. Later in the evening, the raven-haired boy went to the kitchen to prepare Sarada her food. He brought it from the baby shop so everything should be fine. She preoccupied herself with playing with his stuffed dinosaur.

Rule number one when looking after an infant. Don’t leave them unattended, even for a few minutes. Especially when in Sasuke’s case, the house was far from babyproof.

He was barely away for five minutes yet when the Uchiha popped in to check on her, there was so sign of the infant. His dinosaur plushie was left in the spot Sarada was at earlier. Great. Now, where is she? And why did she have to be so annoying?

Said little one was happily crawling away into another room, and looking around the place for her Mama. I mean all three of them lived in the same place so, of course, her Mama would be here, she must be really good at hiding though as Sarada hadn’t seen her since Papa took her home.

“Awo gah boo jaah gah apap.”

‘I wonder where Mama is.’

She was a tall woman with pink hair so it wasn’t like it would be difficult for Sarada to find her anywhere. Sarada didn’t understand why Papa was trying to stop her from seeing Mama. She sat down looking around the room, it didn’t look familiar and Sakura was nowhere in sight.

“There you are.” Sasuke picked her up before Sarada could crawl away. She pouted still having yet to finish her quest for finding Mama. “Your fast, I’ll give you that but you shouldn’t be going anywhere. It’s not safe.”

Sasuke didn’t know why he was talking to the girl as if expecting her to understand him. She couldn’t even talk properly, let alone know what was going on. But maybe if he was stern she would get the idea.

And why did it look like she was glaring at him? It almost seemed familiar, just like his own.

“The last thing I need is Kakashi rubbing it in that he’s right.” He muttered under his breath.

“Ai ai goh ooh ji app app.”

‘I’m trying to find Mama.’

“Ah, I see.” No, he didn’t see and Sarada knew that, if he did then Papa would be just as worried as to where the pink woman was. She started making a fuss wanting to be put down so she could go and explore again. Why didn't he get it? “I’ll give you a tour after you eat.” Perhaps it was going to be more stressful than he thought.

Sarada just continued to pout. “Eat.” She turned her head away refusing the food. This wasn’t the stuff her Papa gave her, he knew what she liked so didn’t understand why he was feeding her with this gunk.

“I said eat.” Again she snubbed the food away. A vein twitched on Sasuke’s forehead. Hmm, how did parents make their children eat? The last he could remember was them cooing almost baby-talking to them and trying to encourage them to eat from the spoon.

I can’t believe I’m doing this…

“Here… here comes the food...” His cheeks were tinted red, so embarrassing. And he had to coo? Sasuke the avenger? It really was a good thing that no one else was there to witness this. Especially Naruto.

Sarada peeked an eye open, and while it wasn’t exactly the same she did remember Sakura doing the same thing.

Although his way could have been more encouraging. ‘Ooooh look Sarada, yums yums. Your Mama’s going to eat it all up if you don’t.’ Sakura would then pretend to eat it herself whilst Sarada would put her arms out wanting it. If Mama would eat it then it had to be good right?

That's how her little brain processed it. She giggled watching her Papa attempting to do the same so opened her mouth to be fed. It wasn’t the right brand but she was too hungry to care. Sasuke gave a sigh of relief watching Sarada finally take a bite and start to eat. “You really are a piece of work. You know that.” He stated when she finally, FINALLY finished her meal.

At least he didn't have any trouble afterwards.

All he got in response was an innocent smile.

“And this is my room. Since you’ll be staying with me.” It wasn’t like Sasuke had a cot for her to sleep in so they could share the bed. As long as he remembered she was there it would be fine.

She looked around, the room was very plain and there weren’t any other plushies. Sarada had plenty of them, so she wondered where they were.

And again there was no Mama.

Perhaps she was busy? For how long though?

Sasuke went to sit down on his bed, not really thinking. He had planned to only rest for a bit but didn't realise how sleepy he felt until his head hit the pillow.

Like Kakashi mentioned previously, taking care of a baby was a lot of hard work. Even different than looking after a cat, or dog or going out on missions.

That was going to be another thing Sasuke had to figure out. What would she do if he had to go on missions? Maybe Kakashi will let him bring her along for the easy ones. Would she even let a complete stranger take care of her?

“I’m not… tired…” he muttered with a yawn to no one in particular and dozed off. Sarada looked up at him noticing that he had fallen asleep. She was going to escape knowing sleepy time meant alone time but couldn’t move.

His arms were secured around her so she couldn't go anywhere much to her displeasure. However then Sarada let out a little yawn of her own so snuggled herself onto his shirt falling asleep.

.

Sarada woke up to the sounds of whimpering and sniffling. Rubbing her eyes she noticed Sasuke was in distress.

Papa was still sleeping but he had tears in his eyes.

Maybe big scary monsters were in his dreams. That always made Sarada feel upset and scared and it usually was Mama or Papa who comforted her.

She decided to do the same by placing her little hands on his cheeks. Almost like saying she was there and tried wiping his tears away.

Sarada would help fight the bad monsters. He seemed to calm down a bit more making her happy.

For a few minutes until...

A really bad smell hit Sasuke and he woke up.

“Did you just…” She gave him a grin and he groaned.

Well, it was only natural.

“I swear you're doing this on purpose.” He didn't even notice that he was crying earlier but maybe it was a good thing.

Sarada wondered if Papa cried often in his sleep. As far as she knew he never did in front of her, she slept in Mama and Papa’s bed plenty of times and never did Sasuke shed any tears. The only difference was there was no Mama.

Ah-ha!

That must be it she thought. Papa was missing Mama, that’s why he was crying. Yes, it all made sense now, but Sarada didn’t cry. She missed Mama sure but didn’t cry since she had Papa.

Maybe they got into a big fight and Mama hated Papa.

“Oi!” Her attention was brought back to the present. “Are you going to eat your food or not?” Well, he could have asked more nicely. No wonder Sakura wasn’t here. Sarada scrunched up her nose but ate the food anyway, she’ll be nice since he was obviously going through a hard time and she had to figure a way how to find Mama and bring them back together. Sarada had her own mission.

Sasuke on the other hand was tired.

It hadn’t even been a day, well not quite and he was worn out. No doubt taking care of a baby was much harder than a mission but he’ll be damned if he let Kakashi tell him so. His Uchiha pride wouldn't allow that.

“I should really name you.” He sat on the table in thought, Sarada was in a little high chair he used to sit on at her age. She sat in it the previous day but he never gave it much thought to how weird it was, to see another Uchiha… if that is who she was again.

The fact of how calm and trusting she is towards him too irked him. Something wasn’t right, or was but he couldn’t figure out what.

“How about Yui?” She only blinked at him in response.

“Maybe not, Riku?” Again nothing. Not that he really needed her permission on using a name but maybe a sign or something to how close it was to the original.

“This is going to be harder than I thought.” Who knew thinking of a name, one that would suit would be difficult? The baby just started sucking on her hand watching him curiously. “Akina, Emiko, Hanako?”

“Achoo!” A sneeze, tch.

“I’ll just call you gremlin instead. It matches you.” Gremlin? Well her father would also call her peanut so maybe it was something like that.

“Ag ag.” She smiled. Almost as if saying ‘I like it.’ What a strange baby. “I need to come up with something better.” Should Sasuke meet the parents in no way did he want to say that he named their beloved daughter gremlin but for now it will do. The rest of the day was filled with crying and tears, he had already changed, fed her and kept trying to give Sarada or rather ‘gremlin’ toys but nothing was working. She would stop, look at the item but then slap it away making him sigh.

What did she want?

Unless…

“Do you miss your parents? Is that it?” Of course, that would be it, you idiot. She has no idea who you are and is now realising her parents aren’t coming back.

If they would come back.

They must have left her there thinking she would be safer there.

So far Sasuke did have his own theories on the little one.

One, and as very unlikely that it was. There was another Uchiha out there but kept hidden due to Itachi. As far as the village knew the whole clan was killed but were they wrong? Could have someone escaped? Sasuke kept trying to tell himself that it was impossible, Itachi was ruthless, and cunning but looking at Sarada, he couldn’t deny there were a lot of resemblances.

Or maybe he was getting ahead of himself and wishing it was true. Because if they were out there he wouldn’t be alone. They might be familiar with each other and-

Sasuke shook his head, best not to dwell on it. Besides, it was unlikely he even cared.

The second was that maybe the father wasn’t around due to the massacre but the mother could still be. She might have had Sarada later and left her here to keep her safe. But even then, there was the matter of Sarada’s age.

The girl continued to wail and cry. Sarada thought by now Papa would understand that she was missing Mama and thus be able to take her to Sakura so she can help them. Just because Mama was cross with Papa didn't mean Sarada couldn't see her. Instead, however, Sasuke picked her up and cradled her instead.

“It’s going to be okay.”

She was caught off guard by that. He was trying to comfort her? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Perhaps he was putting on a brave face and not upset her over the fact both her parents were fighting.

If that's the case she'll go along and be happy.

“Ah ah.”

Sarada placed her hands on his face to comfort him back.

“What do you mean Sarada's missing?!” Sakura yelled at the two men. She didn’t think napping for the day or at least until the afternoon would lead to this.

“Why are we here? We should go out looking for her, she’s probably lost and scared.”

“She couldn’t have gone outside.”

“Did you check? Sarada might have-”

“She wouldn’t, not unless she can reach the door. Every where's sealed and there’s no way she would have been able to move that fast.” Sasuke already checked the house and other than the door everything else was locked.

“Besides,” Naruto interrupted. “If that were the case Boruto would have pointed it out or most likely followed after her but he’s still here.” That was true but where else could she have gone if not inside the house? Sakura didn’t want to imagine what could happen to her baby.

Is it part of a plan?

No, they would have noticed if that were the case and who would be stupid to try something in their own home?

“Then what happened, you can't expect me to believe she just suddenly disappeared? How?!”

“Uwaa aaah ah ah.” Boruto tried to explain moving his arms around as if trying to explain what he saw in front of his eyes.

One minute Sarada was there and the next, she was gone ever since she-

“He keeps doing all these exercises with his arms as if he's trying to tell us something but we're not sure what.” Sakura looked down at the smaller blonde watching his movements.

“He keeps shaking his fist and-”

“Fist? You mean Sarada's rattle?”

The two men blinked whilst Boruto let out a grin. Finally! Someone understood him. It wasn't like the action he did was difficult to understand for kids let alone adults so Boruto didn't get how neither of them got it.

“Wait rattle?”

“Of course, Sarada loves it. Although she doesn't really know how to play with it. You remember it right anata.”

“Ah, yeah...” Honestly, that thought never crossed his mind and how would a rattle make Sarada disappear?

“Don't tell me... you two just figured it out?” They sweatdropped and Naruto nervously chuckled.

“Hehe well, we were in a panic and uh-”

“How could a rattle make Sarada disappear?” Sasuke asked. “Yeah, what he said.”

“I don't know... but it's the best lead we got. Naruto you were the one who gave it to Sarada, where did you get it from?”

“Eh, me?”

“Yes, well it was a gift from you and Hinata. I've written it all down.” It was? “She has, Sakura wanted to make sure we 'thanked you' properly and jotted down who got what.” That earned a kick from his wife.

“Hah? I uh well... I don't remember giving her that... are you sure it was us?”

“Of course! It had your family crest on.” Family crest? But Naruto remembered everything he and Hinata got for Sarada. Mainly because it was Hinata who had an idea of what baby girls would want, although he did go overboard with the shopping.

Still, it was manly plushies, and a few other toys but no rattle.

“I swear we never-” Suddenly it clicked and he turned to look at Boruto who was sucking his thumb whilst holding onto Naruto's jacket with his other hand.

“Hey buddy, did you give Sarada a present?” He nodded in response which only made Naruto sweatdrop.

Of course, he did. Well, he saw his parents give Sarada presents so Boruto wanted to do the same and gave Sarada the rattle he had. But again neither really knew at the time how to use it. Both just ended up chewing or putting it in their mouths.

He made sure Mama cleaned it first though since she always would when it ended up on the floor before letting him use it.

“Boruto gave it to her?”

“Okay, and again how exactly does a rattle even make a baby disappear?” Sasuke was getting frustrated now. Their daughter was out there somewhere and could be in danger and yet here they were talking about rattles and doing nothing.

I mean really what a ridiculous thought.

“Well, that's the thing. It was way before we went out gift shopping for Sarada. Boruto wanted this cute rattle in the store and who were we to say no?”

“But the lady was saying all this weird stuff about it. How he needed to be careful otherwise 'you can be trapped in your past' I don't know, I didn't pay attention to all that. I mean it's just a rattle and Boruto is fine.”

“Then... Sarada could be in danger?” Sakura didn't care about the details, she just wanted her baby back and safe in her arms again. Sasuke yanked Naruto by the collar heading out the door, although he did his best to make sure Boruto wasn't in any harm.

“Instead of all this yapping why don't you take us to this lady? Maybe she can answer a few questions. I swear Naruto if this is some bullshit your dead.”

“Hey! Why am I in trouble? Do you think I wanted this?”

It really wasn't fair.

The next few days were gruesome as hell. It almost seemed like every day was something new. On the third, Sarada kept crawling away almost trying to escape from him. Especially when she would pout when Sasuke captured her. The next she was happily playing with his toys like yesterday didn’t happen and he was even playing along in case she would try to escape again.

And the next Sarada would refuse to eat anything.

Was she deliberately trying to annoy him?

As if that wasn't bad enough Kakashi let himself in again grinning away.

“I didn't think you would last this long.” Although he could see Sasuke was clearly struggling to feed Sarada with the evidence of the food being everywhere else, besides in her mouth. Including Sasuke's face. “What do you want?” Sasuke gritted out.

“Just giving a heads up, we have a mission tomorrow.”

“A mission?”

Oh crap! This was bound to happen but what was he going to do with her?

“You can bring her along, it's a simple mission. We'll be helping an elderly lady with her garden.”

That's it?

“If it's that simple, why couldn't Naruto and Sakura just go?” It would be a waste of time too, he needed to train not-

“Haven't you been babysitting her enough?” Kakashi piped in and then swiped the spoon away from Sasuke. He cooed at Sarada and her eyes lit up munching the food.

“Besides, I think she'll like a change in the company.” He spoke amused at how happy she was, Sasuke just tsked annoyed at how easily she befriended Kakashi.

“They're too loud, she'll be scared of them.”

“Now, now. You'll never know unless you try.” Sarada raised her arms wanting to be picked up, she liked this man. He was funny and she recognised him too. He was a friend of her parents although Papa didn't seem happy.

Kakashi picked up Sarada, baby-talking to her. As if she would be able to understand him, Sasuke thought pouting.

“Don't be jealous, I've had more practice than you with babysitting. I've had to deal with you three.”

What was that supposed to mean?

The alarm went off making Sarada stir and whine. Why did it have to be so noisy when she was trying to sleep? She could feel her Papa move slightly trying not to disturb her as he turned it off lightly groaning himself.

All of a sudden she felt him sit up and frowned. What was going on? They usually go back to sleep afterwards and she was far too tired to wake up. Sasuke looked down at her apologetically.

They had to get up early for the mission, Kakashi wouldn’t be there until later but told them that they could meet up and go on without him since the client was expecting them. She was a sweet woman so they wouldn’t have any trouble, although it may take longer given someone had to look after Sarada whilst the other two worked.

It would be ideal for them to take turns but he wasn’t sure how he felt about allowing Naruto and Sakura to look after Sarada. Would she be crying all the time?

“We’ve got a busy day ahead of us.” He placed her on the bed, her little head kept nodding off wanting more sleep but she blinked watching him move about the room finding some clothes for her to wear. He got some of his old baby clothes but decided to patch over the Uchiha fan. If he had to carry her out in the public eye, it would be better for them if she were an ordinary baby. Could pass off as her being on a mission. “Arm.” Sarada raised her little arm so that he could dress her yawning. It was a quick routine he got himself accustomed to and it helped that she wouldn’t be throwing a fit and just obeyed. Like she was used to it.

“And remember. If anyone asks, we’re not related. I just found you.” Which wasn’t partly a lie anyway, and not that he needed to explain it to her. How was she going to answer them, babbling words no one could understand?

Sarada flopped onto the bed when he was done, still completely tired and wanting nothing more than to snuggle into the blanket. It felt so soft, why did she and Papa have to leave again?

“You can sleep in the carrier throughout the mission, it’s not like you’ll be doing anything.”

Which reminds me, I need to pack her food too.

And probably some toys so she would be entertained. At least one of them got to have an easy day. Sasuke was the first one there. Of course, he was, the Uchiha felt a little ridiculous and embarrassed carrying Sarada out. People were staring when he walked by but as she was sleeping peacefully and cutely he couldn’t find it in himself to care too much. Now he had to wait for his loud teammates, just as long as they-

“Yo Sasuke!”

Perfect. He thought hearing the blonde scream running over to them. Sasuke checked on Sarada to make sure she wasn’t disturbed, she shifted slightly but other than that was still happily sleeping. “Sorry I’m late, I was oh!” Naruto noticed the small infant attached to Sasuke, who was slightly drooling and dreaming about food. “I thought Kakashi-sensei was lying when he told us you had a baby…”

Since when was Sasuke such a softy?

“Keep it down, idiot.”

“Who are you calling an idiot and I am quiet!”

“No you aren’t and you’re going to disturb her, do you want her to cry throughout the mission?” Naruto was about to retort but seeing Sarada stir slightly thought better against it.

“Okay fine, I’ll kick your ass later.” He half-whispered and yelled.

“Tsk, as if you could.” The boy hmped grumbling under his breath, restraining himself from starting a fight. He could be mature and leave the fighting for another day.

“So what’s her name?” Sasuke paused for a while wondering if he should say it and couldn’t think of any other names on top of his head to lie with.

“Gremlin.” Three, two, one.

Naruto burst out laughing and Sasuke again told him to keep it down glaring.

“Oh wait, you're serious?”

“How would I know her actual name?”

“I don’t know but you can at least call her something else.”

“Hmph, she likes it.”

“Oh yeah, because a baby really understands what their name means.”

“I didn't ask for your opinion.”

“Because you sound more stupid than me?”

“If you don’t keep it down I’ll-”

“Oh hey, it’s Sakura-Chan. Morning Sakura-Chan!” Sarada woke up then from all the arguing. Her eyes adjusted to the light, oh she recognised him. He was Papa and Mama’s friend who would often bring another baby over her age.

“Nice work dead last!”

“Hey, you were yelling just as much as me. This isn’t my fault.” Sarada watched switching her head over from one to the other when they argued. It was funny watching them and she clapped her hands giggling.

Then a familiar voice broke in. “Isn’t it a bit early to be bickering?” Sarada turned her head, eyes sparkling.

“Sorry, I tried to get here as fast as I could but-”

“Aaah ah ah.” The little girl raised her arms wanting to be picked up. Finally, Mama was here. Now she could help Papa with Mama and figure out why they were fighting. For now, though she just wanted a hug.

Sasuke on the other hand was not amused and was confused as to why Sarada kept fidgeting trying to get out of his hold.

“Stop fussing.” Sasuke tried to calm her down but Sarada kept fighting wanting Sakura to hold her. “Ah ah aam aam.”

“Uh, I think she wants Sakura-chan to hold her.” Naruto pointed although he didn’t know why but with the way she was holding her arms out, eyes pleading to the kunoichi it would be better than having her cry.

“Eh? Well, I don’t mind.” Sakura blushed and went to scoop Sarada up before Sasuke could protest.

“Aren’t you a cutie?” Sakura cooed nuzzling Sarada making her giggle in response. She was too adorable.

Mama's smell was comforting and relaxing but it was weird that again Papa tried to stop them from seeing each other. Did they really have a big fight?

“Fine, have it your way.” Sasuke tsked and stormed off annoyed at how eagerly and happy Sarada was with Sakura. Why did he bother looking after her?

“Oi, oi, oi. Don’t be a jerk.” It was odd how Sasuke was acting and Naruto turned to Sakura who was just as confused.

“Is he mad at me?”

“I don’t know, who knows what that bastard's thinking.”

“Naruto watch your mouth, she might pick up on it. The last thing we need is to upset her parents.”

“Ooops hehe, but I mean... she's just a baby. Does it really-”

“Yes! It does, you should at least try to watch your language when your around those younger than you.”

Shanarooo! Now Sasuke-Kun’s mad at us. Sakura deflated a bit but looking at the little baby who was now playing with her pink locks Sakura couldn't help but melt. Although, I guess I can’t blame him. She's so cute.

The words Kakashi had said before flooded her mind and she was starting to wonder if he had a point.

“Sakura, I need you to keep an eye on Sasuke for me.”

“Eh Sasuke-Kun? What for?”

“You remember the baby I told you about, I think he’s grown quite attached to her.”

“Is that really such a bad thing though?” I mean, if they were related did it matter if he did? Maybe she could help with the void of losing his parents?

...

Okay, that was a stretch but she didn't see the harm.

“Sakura. Do you honestly believe that she’s an Uchiha?”

“…”

No, not really.

“It's an unlikely possibility and even if they are related she can only be related to a certain someone.” Her eyes widen at what he implied.

“You don’t mean.”

“Itachi Uchiha, he’s the only living Uchiha besides Sasuke. I’m sure he’s aware of it but is either in denial or doesn't want to think about it.” And who could blame him? “If that is the case then Sasuke would only want to help her more right? I mean if she's his niece-”

“Then she's also likely in danger don't you think? Sasuke can't look after her, she needs to be safe and he's far too young.”

“I see... it's not fair. She might be the only living relative he has.”

“And she might not be related at all. Either way, you understand what I'm saying right.”

Sasuke couldn't keep Sarada and if he was attached like Kakashi-sensei said he was it would hurt. “Perhaps you could talk to him. See if you or Naruto can persuade him to let us take care of her. It's for the best.”

“Your asking for something really cruel Kakashi.”

“I know.”

Unfortunately, he was right and Sakura wasn't sure what to make of it. “We should catch up with him. Right cutie.”

“Ah ah.” Sarada nodded her head.

“Hey, maybe you can think of a better name than Sasuke bas- Sasuke.”

Well, they could at least make memories.

“Hmm, what about Mayumi?” Sakura suggested to the two boys as the three walked to where their mission was. Sarada was still playing with her pink locks, big eyes wandering and looking about the forest. A butterfly landed on her nose and she gave a little sneeze since it tickled scaring the butterfly away.

She laughed watching the interesting creature fly away in awe.

Sasuke said nothing choosing not to answer, it didn’t sit well with him how easily she got along with Sakura. The two just met as well. Noticing this Naruto decided to speak out. “Why Mayumi?” He asked.

“It was one of the names my parents picked out for me, so it’s the first one I thought of. It’s not like we need to overthink it, it’ll just be easier to have one for her.”

“Hey, it’s better than gremlin.” Naruto laughed looking at Sasuke, but he still said nothing. And instead tsked walking faster ahead of the two. The blonde frowned looking back at Sakura who had a saddened look on her face.

He couldn’t blame her, neither had an idea why Sasuke was acting this way. Although he had a hunch it just seemed out of character for him to blame Sakura for something she had no control of.

It was out of character for him to hate or be mad at Sakura like this at all.

He went ahead to catch up to the Uchiha.

“What’s up with you?” Naruto went in front to stop him from walking.

“What?”

“You, you’ve been acting more angsty than you usually do. It’s not because Mayumi prefers Sakura-chan over you is it? It’s not her fault.”

“I don’t care! They can do what they like and she’s not Mayumi!” Naruto was about to protest with the name but he nudged past him with his hands in his pockets.

“Why you-” He stopped mid-sentence realising both Sakura and Mayumi were looking at him in confusion. Little Sarada had one of her hands gripped on Sakura’s clothing whilst her other was in her mouth. “Uh… anyway Mayumi it is, what do you think?” The Uzumaki turned to Sarada, and she brightened grinning away and making small baby sounds.

“Boo!”

“Waah!” Sarada giggled and crawled over to the other side of the tree where Sakura was already and ‘scared’ her again. She giggled again crawling back to the other side of the tree.

Sakura had been looking after Sarada and keeping her busy whilst Naruto and Sasuke were working in the garden. It was quite a big one, including having a tree planted where there was a swing, since Sarada was far too young to try it Sakura thought of another way to amuse the girl.

‘Why don’t we take it in turns?’ Sakura suggested to the boys. ‘I’ll babysit Mayumi for a bit and then Sasuke and then you Naruto. And the other two can work on the garden so that one of us is still keeping an eye on her and we’re still working on the mission.’

Although it may take a while longer to finish the mission, it wasn’t like it was anything too strenuous than what they were used to and the old lady wasn’t able to look after the baby herself as it would be ‘too difficult’ so one of them had to keep an eye on Mayumi. Well, that’s what she says. When really she was busy entertaining her family who were visiting.

It was strange as they could have easily helped with the garden but they were all relaxing.

And unfortunately for Sakura Sasuke still said nothing to her the entire time, even though he was usually quiet he would still give his opinion or suggest a better ‘tactic’ but he shrugged and went on to do his part for the mission.

“What’s a pretty girl like you doing around here?”

Sakura wanted nothing more than to punch the boy -the grandson- since he had been trying to flirt and kept bothering her when she just ignored him paying more attention to Sarada. Why was he acting as if he didn’t speak to her ten minutes ago? Alas, it would look bad for them so she bit her tongue and resisted the urge to give him her usual Sakura punch.

“Uhhh…”

“Your way too pretty to be a ninja.” He sat on the blanket Sakura laid out in front of the tree, at least they were kind enough to give them something to rest on whilst waiting. Except he was sitting way too close.

Sarada frowned at the strange boy who was acting excessively lovey-dovey for her liking when it should be her Papa there. She was in between the two on the blanket so she put her arms out to Sakura wanting to be picked up hoping he would get the hint and leave.

She did and Sarada clung to Sakura’s clothing giving him a look. “And you’re so good with kids as well, I’m sure you’ll make a fine wife.” Well, that didn’t sound creepy coming from a guy she just met. He ruffled Sarada’s hair.

“Bah!” Sarada removed his hand pushing it away with her small two hands huffing. First, he was trying to steal Mama away from Papa and now he was trying to take her away. Like that would work.

In Sarada's mind, she pictured an evil dragon trying to steal Sakura who was a Princess and her who was also a Princess away from the knight Sasuke and make him angry. Instead, however, the knight was able to beat the dragon and save Sakura and Sarada.

Maybe she did have a bit of imagination but Sakura did read her fairy tales when she was sleeping.

He didn’t think anything of it and put his on her head once more. “Bah!” Sarada again removed his hands frowning.

“Aww look we’re playing.” He cooed putting his hand on her head again. Playing? This wasn’t playing, he was annoying and kept making Mama extremely uncomfortable. “Bah!” Sarada gave him a ‘death glare’ as if that would do anything. It looked too cute seeing as she was a baby but Sarada had witnessed her Papa do it numerous times and figured she could do the same.

“Uh… she isn’t good with new people. She gets nervous when she meets someone new.” That was of course a lie, but it was obvious how annoyed Sarada was. Sakura blamed herself thinking she could sense her uneasiness, wasn’t there a saying that babies could pick up on emotions? It might have rubbed off on her.

“Ah my apologies, I guess she’s used to you.”

Not really. Sakura thinks curious now as to how and why Sarada trusted her completely. It really was weird now that she thought of it. She cooed down at her, smiling hoping it would be enough to calm her down but Sarada was still keeping an eye on the boy. “It’s fine, maybe you can give me some tips.” He got closer and… wait, was his lips getting closer too?

Why the little-

Sakura was fuming!

Inner Sakura was going crazy.

SHANAROOO! SCREW BEING POLITE! PUNCH HIM BEFORE HE STEALS OUR FIRST KISS!

“Baaah!” But was blocked when Sarada raised her hands to his chin. They were too small to reach his mouth but she was still able to halt him from getting closer. With that, Sakura was able to snap out of her trance and punched him.

Hard. It sent him flying to the other side and broke a fence.

“What do you think you’re doing? You can’t just KISS a girl WITHOUT consent!” Sakura was standing up still holding Sarada with one arm, who had a smug little look on her face. It even alerted the other two boys. It was then a mischievous idea popped into Sarada’s mind. Sure it was devious but it always worked with them anyway.

Sarada began crying and wailing and immediately Sasuke was by their side.

“What happened? What’s wrong with her?!” Naruto made a tsking sound. Muttering an ‘I don’t care my ass.’

“Sorry Sasuke-Kun it’s my-”

“It was you wasn’t it?” He turned to the boy who was just recovering from Sakura’s punch.

“I didn’t do anything!”

“Sasuke-Kun it was me! I mean I punch him so it might have scared her-” She tried to defuse the situation by getting between them. Sarada looked up at Sakura frowning, no she was uncomfortable and he tried to kiss her when only Papa can kiss her.

Why was she defending him?

“You wouldn’t have punched him without good reason to.” Sarada nodded her head agreeing with Papa. That’s exactly what happened.

“Ah… well that’s…” She knew she couldn’t hide the truth, but at the same time, Sakura didn’t want Sasuke to do anything extreme. Quite frankly she’d much rather do it herself.

“What did he do?”

“Um…”

“Sakura.”

“He… he tried to kiss me.” Sakura looked down feeling shameful. She knew there wasn't any reason to, but this was supposed to be a simple mission.

Why did it end up like this?

“He did WHAT?!” Naruto screamed. Although he knew he wasn’t one to talk given how he tried to trick Sakura beforehand but he knew better now. Sasuke saw red and lunged at him.

“Sasuke don’t!”

“If you touch her again-”

“Fine! I get it! It’s my fault, I apologise.” He tsked letting go of his collar and glaring down at him, besides the family was coming after hearing all the commotion so doing any more damage would only make them look bad.

“You’re not worth it.”

“What the hell happened here? You, kids, are supposed to be fixing my garden not ruining it some more!” Sasuke just shot them a look. “Then tell HIM to stop harassing girls. We’re done for today, let’s go.” Sasuke took Sarada from Sakura thinking she could use a break and Sarada peeked her head over Sasuke’s shoulder smirking at the boy.

Was it just him seeing this or did that baby hate him?

“Sorry, it’s my fault we’re in this mess.”

“Don’t apologise Sakura-chan. Even Mayumi-chan knew you were uncomfortable, that’s why she cried in the first place.” Wait, that was why?

“Ah, Naruto’s right. She can certainly stir up drama.” Sasuke said as Sarada tried munching on his headband, it was mainly to keep her entertained whilst they waited for Kakashi to deal with the situation.

“And besides we all know Kakashi-sensei won’t take crap from anyone.” Naruto piped in, and Sarada crawled over to Sakura handing her Sasuke’s headband. As if to make her feel better.

“Uh, thanks?” She looked over at Sasuke who shrugged. It was the thought that counts.

~Meanwhile~

“Oh? So are you saying my student had no right to defend herself?”

Yup, they were in real trouble.

Notes:

Sakura has arrived haha, and I finally got the rest of the thread posted here. I'm so happy. Not sure how long it'll take to get the next part out as it's still in the works. Anyway, hope you enjoyed it.

Chapter Text

“You three sure know how to make a scene, or should that be four.” Kakashi grinned behind his mask, and Sarada smiled perfectly innocently with a little halo on top of her head. She was back in the carrier strapped onto Sasuke. She did whine and made a bit of a fuss being separate from Sakura but after she cooed letting her know it was okay. Sarada happily listened to Mama.

“Sorry Kakashi-sensei it was my-”

“Ah, what did we say? Nothing is your fault, I won’t have my students being harassed.” The Jōnin lightly patted her head. Sakura let out a small smile appreciative, Kakashi was like a father figure to the three of them. He wouldn’t tolerate anyone messing with his students.

“I’ll have to brief the details to the Hokage though.” At least to save any other future shinobi and kunoichi from dealing with the family.

“So that’s it for today, right?” Did this mean they could finally go home now?

“My, my, aren’t you in a hurry? But yes when we arrive back at Konoha you can all go home. I’ll probably have another mission for you in three days, so be prepared.” It seemed someone was eager to get some sleep, deny it as he will Kakashi could see taking care of Mayumi was taking a toll on him. Sasuke was only used to looking after himself for most years, looking after another, let alone a baby would be difficult for anyone.

“All right, now we can spend time with Mayumi-Chan!” Naruto cheered, fist pumping in the air. A bit too loudly startling all four of them.

“What?” Sasuke glared at Naruto, he was joking, right?

“Come on, you can’t hog her all to yourself. I want to spend some time with her too you know.”

“She’s not a toy! And I need to put her to sleep, she needs more rest than us.”

“Then she can sleep on the way home,” Naruto said as if it was a matter of fact like the answer was so obvious. That idiot.

“I would like to spend time with her too Sasuke-Kun.” Sakura peered around him smiling at Sarada. She happily baby babbled reaching towards the young kunoichi. Sasuke gave a tsk annoyed again at how easily persuaded she was.

“Besides, she’s your family, right? That makes her our family too, we’re a team now. Right, Mayumi.” Naruto also cooed kneeling down to face Sarada and once again she happily replied with baby sounds. As if understanding and agreeing.

The three of them on the other hand stiffened, although he and Sakura were told about Mayumi, she knew there was less of a chance of her being related to Sasuke. Something Sasuke was still in denial of. Naruto seemed to think otherwise with how alike they are.

“I don’t need anyone’s help looking after Mayumi, she’s my responsibility No one else’s, understand?”

This was the least he could do, right? After being so weak on not being able to save his parents, his family, and the clan. He could protect Mayumi away from harm.

“Sasuke-Kun…” Sakura could see the guilt in his eyes. How vulnerable he was despite trying to glare and make Naruto back down. She could feel the tension, and wouldn’t be surprised if Mayumi could too, it was no wonder he had been overprotective of her earlier.

However, then Naruto started… laughing? Or rather trying not to. What?

“Pfft-” Naruto couldn’t contain himself.

“What’s so funny?”

“Hehe, nothing but didn’t you say Mayumi wasn’t her real name?” It took a while for it to click and again he glared at the blonde more annoyed. That’s what he got out of this?

“Think what you like.” Sasuke turned around about to walk ahead in front of them.

Sarada didn’t really understand what was going on as she wasn’t paying much attention, just turning her head from one person to the other as they spoke until they went up to her asking questions which she happily answered. Of course, she wanted to spend more time with Mama and the ‘idiot’ her Papa kept referring to him as.

Although she was also confused as to why Mama kept referring her as ‘Mayumi’ instead of Sarada. Was it because she hadn’t seen her in a long time and had forgotten what she looked like? Yet Mama was always so happy to see her, maybe all was not lost. Sarada had to remind her she was her Mama.

However, when Papa turned to walk away blocking Sarada from her view of Sakura she started to wail. He was going to leave her again. Weren’t they getting along just a moment ago? Why were her parents mean?

“Haha, looks like your outnumbered bastard- ow!”

Naruto wailed when Sakura hit him on the head.

“What have I told you about your language idiot?”

“Why do you two get to call me an idiot in front of Mayumi? How is that fair?” At least the bickering eased up on all the tension Kakashi thought to himself.

When Sasuke looked back down at Sarada she looked up at him with big puppy eyes and lips trembling almost like she wanted to cry again.

“Why do you even want to hang out with these two?” The Uchiha muttered, he didn’t understand the baby, perhaps she found them fun to be around.

I’m going to regret this.

“Fine!” Sasuke gave in which caused Naruto and Sakura to pause what they were doing. “Oi, seriously? You better not back out of this.”

“Yes, don’t make me repeat-” He didn’t even have time to finish his sentence before Naruto went running ahead of them. “Alright, team outing. Last one to Konoha has to pay for lunch.” The three of them just stood there and sweat dropped whilst Sarada giggled amused by his antics.

“Still lively as ever.” Kakashi mused.

“Does Naruto even know how to get home?” Sakura wondered out loud, he didn’t have the best sense of direction. Sarada looked up at Sasuke and then pointed to where Naruto went as if saying ‘are we going to follow him or not?’ Almost as if she understood what he said and didn’t want to be the last one. “Ah, your right. He’ll get lost if we don’t follow him. Wait up dead last!”

“Sasuke-Kun, don’t say such words in front of… Mayumi…” Sakura gave up seeing as he was long gone anyway. She crossed her arms with a huff, those boys. Did they have to make everything into a competition?

“You should go ahead, otherwise you’ll be the one picking up Naruto’s tab.” It wasn’t like their sensei was going to be coming along. “This is so unfair!” They had a head start, well maybe if she gets lucky, she can beat Naruto since he would most likely get himself lost… oh who was she kidding, they were long gone now.

“Oh, and Sakura.” Kakashi called out to her. “Don’t forget to talk to Sasuke, remember the sooner the better.”

“Right…”

Easier said than done but Kakashi did have a point. The longer Mayumi stayed with him that harder it will be to let her go. She wasn’t sure how she could convince Sasuke to listen to her but perhaps bonding and spending time with the two of them will help.

The two boys and Mayumi were waiting for her by Konoha’s gate. Sarada was just about to nod off to sleep before noticing her Mama, she let out a little squeal.

“Who got here first?”

“Who do you think?” Sasuke replied smugly. “This idiot didn’t know where he was going.”

“Hey! I did too, I was taking a shortcut.” At that Sasuke rolled his eyes. “Sure.”

“I was too!” As the two boys were glaring at each other Mayumi reached out to Sakura smiling away. The two of them were arguing nonstop about the winner before she got here so Sarada was bored. Not understanding what was going on. Seeing this Sakura took it as a perfect opportunity to steal her away.

“Well, while you two figure things out. Me and Mayumi-Chan are going to save our spots.” Sakura quickly picked up Mayumi away from Sasuke, she giggled in response happy to be with her Mama and it was only then did the two boys stop arguing.

“You okay with Sakura-Chan taking Mayumi-Chan away?” He didn’t seem too pleased last time. Sasuke merely shrugged. “I can’t stop her and if I do, she’ll probably cry.”

“Look at you being mature.” Sasuke chose to ignore that remark and walked off. Naruto was glad the two were getting along again.

Of course they ended up at Ichiraku, knowing their teammate there’s no other place he’d rather be. Not that it mattered as it wasn’t like either Sasuke or Sakura went there often. Sakura had already taken a seat with Sarada on her lap, she was again happily chewing on her hair whilst Sakura was trying to pull it away.

Sasuke took a seat next to Sakura and upon watching the scene carefully brushed all of Sakura’s hair behind her back, including the lock Sarada had in her hand so she couldn’t reach it. Sarada gave a little glare at her Papa for ruining her fun. Naruto arrived sometime afterwards greeting Teuchi and Ayame and took a seat next to Sasuke, so he was in the middle.

“Thank you Sasuke-Kun,” a light blush spread across her cheeks, it was an all too familiar scene for Sarada. Her Mama would usually turn a shade darker with whatever her Papa said or did. She didn’t really understand but was glad things were turning normal again. Perhaps they were no longer fighting now. Having nothing to chew on, she looked around fascinated by the place. It was a small place, but the smell was delicious.

“Ah, Naruto how are you doing? Oh, and who’s this cutie?” Teuchi turned to Sarada smiling at her, she hid her head bashfully in Sakura’s clothes. Usually, she was more sociable and loved meeting new people, but seeing so many faces at once can be draining. Besides it wasn’t like her Mama, Papa or the idiot were complete strangers to her.

“This is Mayumi-Chan, she’s-”

“It’s a babysitting mission.” Sasuke elbowed Naruto by ribcage, and he winced. Was he really going to blab about her being an Uchiha? It would be much too dangerous, then again, this was Naruto. It was unlikely that they would believe him. “Ah right, yeah. It’s a mission we’re currently doing. Nothing we can’t handle though.”

“Why am I not surprised, the usual I take it?”

“You know it!” Naruto grinned; his stomach gurgled in response. He couldn’t wait to eat. After Teuchi took in Sasuke and Sakura’s orders, the three were left to themselves.

“So, what should we do after this?” Naruto asked.

“We can always take her shopping?” Sakura suggested. It was more of an excuse to make her try on cute little dresses.

“I have enough clothes for her.”

“Ah ah, a girl needs more than just clothes Sasuke-Kun, and you have to find the right ones not just pick anything. She’ll need accessories too to go with them. Right Mayumi-Chan?” Sarada was still hiding but she peeked up at Sakura hearing her soft voice and gave a little hum in acknowledgement.

“She isn’t a doll.”

“But she’ll look adorable,” was it his imagination or did Sasuke and Sakura sound like two parents arguing about what was best for their child? Naruto shook it off, this was hardly an argument.

“I agree with Sakura-Chan, I think it can be fun. Then we can go to the park.” Although she was far too young to be playing on the playground, they could probably have little picnic and chill. It would be a nice experience for them as a team too.

“That sounds like a great idea Naruto,” Sakura agreed, and Sasuke sighed. There was no point arguing with these two and this was why he didn’t want them to have anything to do with Mayumi, now they’ll never leave them alone… and he was still using Sakura’s name for the baby.

Tsk.

“Here you are.” Teuchi placed the bowls in front of them. “Enjoy.” Naruto immediately dug in slurping on his ramen, Sasuke rolled his eyes at his behaviour. Sakura on the other hand looked down at Mayumi trying to figure out how to eat with her on her lap. Most likely she would try to take away her food and that would be dangerous.

Noticing her dilemma Ayame walked around the booth.

“Here, I can take her. You need to eat too.” Sakura smiled gratefully handing Mayumi over to Ayame. She looked at the woman then back at Sakura then to her again, her eyes grew big and watery as her lips started to tremble.

“Ah, don’t cry now.” Ayame started to panic, she hadn’t meant to upset the little one. Getting an idea Ayame sat at the empty spot next to Sakura. “There you go, she’s right there. She just needs to eat like her other two teammates, see?” Seemingly more calmed down now, Sarada’s hand reached over to grab Sakura’s lock which was now accessible but instead held it in her hand for comfort rather than putting in her mouth.

Sarada gave a big grin to Ayame who sighed in relief that she had managed to comfort the girl before she could cry and gushed on how cute she was. Sakura apologised on her behalf, feeling slightly guilty and was relieved that Mayumi was distracted enough so she could eat. Watching the three Sasuke couldn’t help but find it odd how upset she would get being separated from his teammate.

She’s way too attached to Sakura.

Perhaps there was something more than her looking like her Mama, could they really know each other? Still, he couldn’t quite place how. He was missing something, yet no explanation came to mind.

After Sakura and Sasuke were finished (Naruto still wanted another bowl) Sarada by now was used to Ayame completely forgetting about her lock and kept putting her hands over her eyes playing peekaboo with the woman giggling away. Teuchi had also played and kept Sarada entertained taking her behind the store to give the three of them a break. Well, he is a father himself. With her being distracted/entertained by them it gave him the perfect opportunity.

“Sakura…” This was going to sound crazy, but he needed to know so he could at least cross the idea out. “Do you… know her?” Hearing such a question Naruto almost coughed out his ramen and stared at the two in bewilderment. In what way would Sakura know little Mayumi-Chan?

Sakura seemed just as caught off guard as he did.

“Eh? Where would you get that idea from?”

“I had to ask,” he shrugged like it was nothing. “She seems… attached to you. Too much, the other day she kept pointing at you from the photo we took as team. Like she knew you.” Not to mention she would cry and throw a tantrum if she was taken away from her.

“I assumed that she mistook you for her mother.”

“You think I look like her mother?”

“Oh, that would make sense.” Naruto nodded agreeing. “I mean he’s right; she does cling to you and Sasuke too. If she’s mistaken, you two for her real parents it would explain a lot.” That may be true but no matter how much Sakura wanted to believe the Mayumi was an Uchiha, it just didn’t seem possible. Sure, maybe the two did look like her parents but not in the way Sasuke thinks they do.

“Do you really think-” Sakura held back her tongue, no it was too soon. They… she had to approach this gently on letting Mayumi go.

“Never mind.” Ayame then came back with Sarada.

“You’ve been summoned.”

“Bah, bah.” She reached her small hands towards Mama and immediately snuggled feeling safe and relaxed in Sakura’s arms. Perhaps she was going to find it hard to let her go too.

“Naruto are you sure this is the right place?” It didn’t look like a store, let alone one for babies. For one, there was no door and everything inside was empty. Sakura also had no recollection of such a store being here in the middle of Konoha and considering her and Ino went shopping a lot, if it was here, she would know.

“This was the place, maybe they’ve moved?”

“Ah, yes because that’s common.” Sasuke glared daggers at Naruto.

“I swear it was here, come on. You don’t think I want to help you find Sarada?”

“Boys, stop it! Now is not the time, not when our baby girl is missing.” She only wanted answers. Of how and where Sarada could possibly end up, no one understood what was going on or how she could get out but if they could find whoever sold the rattle to them, maybe they’ll have answers.

Right now, she just wanted to have Sarada in her arms again and never let go.

“Gee, what’s with all the noise.” An elderly woman came down the stairs, she had grey hair that was in a bun and was walking with a stick. Hardly someone who could be classified as an enemy, but they knew better to judge a book by its cover.

“Wait, I recognise you! You’re the one who sold us the rattle.” Although Naruto had tried to look intimidating with pointing his finger at her and glaring it was hard to do so as Boruto was currently sleeping in the baby carrier feeling completely relaxed and exhausted with all the drama.

“Oh, it’s you, I did try to warn you.” She walked away completely unbothered.

“Warn him about what exactly?” Sakura questioned; she didn’t seem the slightest bit fazed that they… broke into her home? Were they breaking in, I mean there were no doors but instead went inside to her what could only be assumed of was a kitchen to grab something to drink. The three followed and Sakura could only get more suspicious. It’s like she knew/expected them to come.

“About the rattle, I told him of the consequences. Whoever holds that rattle will end up trapped in the past.” She poured a glass of water taking a sip for herself.

“Er, yeah but I mean come on. That sounds ridiculous.” It did, Sakura agreed with Naruto and knew there had to be something up.

“What exactly are you saying? Look whatever problem you have with us, spill it out. It’s got nothing to with our daughter.” Whoever needed Ibiki when you had Uchiha Sakura. Sasuke knew it was most likely the stress and worry for their daughter, but he didn’t feel any malicious intent coming from the woman, if he wanted to, he could use his sharingan to get all the answers but didn’t feel the need it was necessary. It seemed more like a mistake. Bad luck?

At first, he was furious and wanted to kill someone however meeting and hearing all these strange explanations. Perhaps there was a mix up and knowing Naruto, he should have paid better attention. Sasuke put a hand on her shoulder giving it a light reassuring squeeze, he wouldn’t let any harm come of their daughter. Not if he can help it.

“What my wife means is, we’re worried of our daughter’s whereabouts. She’s missing and for now the only clue we have is this… rattle.” Her eyes soften, understanding of the two parents.

“I understand, like I said it’s a rattle that leads you to your past.” She then walked over to a cupboard to grab some biscuits and placed them onto a plate, offering them to her guests. They declined but found it weird that despite the circumstances that was given, it didn’t deter her on making lunch?

“But she doesn’t have a past, she can’t even walk or talk.” Sakura tried to make sense of the situation; how can someone go to their past when they themselves didn’t have one. I mean what adult would use a rattle? And who came up with such a ridiculous idea?

“And you two don’t?” They gave a puzzled look. Of course, they had a past. Hell, all three of them did but they didn’t understand what that had to do with Sarada?

“She may not have a past, her parents on the other hand do, so chances are whatever you two have been through. That’s where she is.” She took a sip of her water as the realisation came to the three of them.

Immediately dark thoughts came to their mind, of the war, Uchiha massacre, even the battles they’ve face from the Akatsuki and including against each other.

“Shit.” Sasuke muttered.

Regardless of where abouts she was in the past, it wasn’t one for their daughter to be in.

“Oh, she would look adorable in this one.” Sakura picked out a lavender dress, it had puffy sleeves with a bow. Sakura went to the dressing room to change Mayumi and upon seeing the result noticed the dress was tad bigger than her. Not by much but still noticeable. Mayumi couldn’t stop grinning, finding everything to be fun and amusing.

“Hmm perhaps not,” Sakura went to look for more clothing passing the baby back to Sasuke who was waiting outside the room. He couldn’t believe he let Sakura and Naruto drag him to do this, but Sakura insisted. Saying she knew what was best as a fellow woman and who was he to deny?

Perhaps he needed Sakura’s help more than he thought.

As Sakura was browsing, she came across a two-piece romper suit, the dress part was all red with cute buttons whilst the long sleeve was white with little red hearts over it. This was the perfect colour for her. Again, Sakura went to change Mayumi and it was a perfect fit, it suited her nicely.

Sakura came out to show the results to her teammate.

“Doesn’t she look adorable Sasuke-Kun?” He let out a hmp not caring.

“No, you’re right, she’s missing something.”

“Hey, hey! What about this one?” Naruto showed a very… bright orange shirt with matching shorts.

Very bright indeed.

“No way!”

“What? What’s wrong with it?”

“She is not wearing anything orange.”

“Orange is a great colour, I wear it.”

“My point exactly.”

“Oi!”

“Now, now you two. And I agree with Sasuke-Kun on this Naruto, orange wouldn’t suit her. She’s dark and mysterious like him. Red is more her colour.” Except Sasuke wasn’t wearing anything red, but neither mentioned it.

Luckily for them, it wasn’t like their entire past was filled with horror and Sarada was indeed safe.

If only they knew.

Notes:

I finally post the next chapter, I’m sorry for how long it’s been. I didn’t realise the last one I posted was well last year, but I found some inspiration for it again. As of now adult SasuSaku (and Naruto) are trying to figure out how to get to Sarada whilst she’s happily having fun with their younger selves.

Let me know below what you think ^^

Chapter 4: Genin Sasuke Part 4

Chapter Text

“Any luck with the baby?” Hiruzen looks at Kakashi expectedly, they had talked about it previously on how unsafe it was for Mayumi to stay with Sasuke. If there was a chance that she was an Uchiha then most likely she could be Sasuke’s niece. It was the only explanation they had given how old she looks as there were no Uchiha other than the two. And even then, that was a big if as neither can imagine Itachi Uchiha taking such risks.

Certainly not with him being a missing nin and having to stay low.

“We can’t dismiss it entirely, he’s still a boy.” Homura added.

They had to take every consideration, who knows maybe he never knew he got a random woman pregnant. If word did get out about their potentially being another Uchiha what would happen to her? To Konoha? Would Itachi come back to see for himself? They had to take Mayumi off Sasuke’s hands and keep her low.

“And if she is?” Kakashi asked.

“We’ll give her to an ordinary family. Keep an eye on her, we can’t risk anyone finding out about her being an Uchiha.” Danzo suggested, Kakashi couldn’t help but scoff at that. They had no idea what they were doing and put no thoughts or consideration to how Mayumi would feel. They couldn’t hide the secret of her being an Uchiha from herself, still the main priority now was convincing Sasuke to give her up.

Kakashi figured he could count on his students, the two would be able to change his mind.

Okay, maybe Naruto wouldn’t be the best candidate. If anything, he would probably try his best on finding a way for them to keep Mayumi if she and Sasuke were related. Sakura on the other hand would understand.

Could she find it in her heart to disagree with him though? That would be another thing.

Either way, they were the two Kakashi was counting on.

“Now how exactly are going to pry the little one off him?”

“I have an idea.”

“Ah… about that…” The Hokage doesn’t give an impressed look whilst Kakashi rubbed the back of his head chuckling nervously. Sasuke fully believed she was Uchiha, whether he accepted that she could be Itachi’s daughter or not was another thing, but the boy was determined to protect the little one and unfortunately for Kakashi it also seemed she was as equally as attached to Sasuke.

And Sakura. Kakashi recalls, something didn’t add up. He could understand why she would cling to Sasuke, but Sakura was another matter. Perhaps it was because so far, she was the only girl and therefore the closest ‘mother figure’ she had. Maybe even that was why she was so attached to Sasuke.

“Time is of the essence; I’m doing my best to keep the council off your case because I trust you. Does the boy realise there’s a chance she may not even be an Uchiha?”

“I understand, give it time. Sasuke is a smart boy, he’ll come around. I can tell ‘parenting’ is tiring him out and no he fully believes she’s an Uchiha.”

“Is there a way we can get her back? She can’t stay in our past!” What if she hurts herself, Sasuke wouldn’t even think of the worst-case scenario but then if something did happen wouldn’t they remember it? Maybe she isn’t even with them.

“You’re the boy with the rinnegan aren’t you?” The strange woman approached him, he kept his guard up yet allowed her to stand in front of him. Including tugging his face down (for someone who seemed so fragile she certainly didn’t feel like one) staring right into the rinnegan. As if inspecting it of sorts? Both Sakura and Naruto looked at each other bewildered not exactly sure if they could trust her or not.

“Hmm yes I think I can come up with something.”

“You can?” Sakura asked, voice hopeful.

“Yes, the rinnegan allows you to create portals to other dimensions, yes? I can cast a spell that will allow you to travel back in time however it’s on you on where you want to go. There’s a good chance that wherever you’ll pick she would have moved on elsewhere. For example, let’s say you chose the day in which you were born, she could be in your teenage years. Understand?” Sasuke nodded taking in the information whilst Sakura cursed muttering ‘freaking spells, Gods, aliens.’

Well, they had experienced so many strange things and now their daughter was involved too.

“Isn’t going back to the past dangerous though?” Wouldn’t it mess up their timeline. What if he did something and it changed everything here?

“Don’t be stupid my boy, imagine the chaos that would exists if that was such a thing. As soon as she transports herself to another of your memories then the previous you or whoever she’s with will forget all about her. The same would go for you when you travel back, as soon as you get to your next destination then all memorise will be erased until you find yourself back here.”

Now the three of them were even more confused.

“Wait so you’re saying our daughter will come back to us anyway?” She couldn’t have said that sooner? And who the hell would come up with designing a rattle of all things to bring you back to the past?

For what purpose did it serve?

“Well yes, what do you take me for? An idiot? But it’s only if she still holds it. If she loses it, then she’ll be stuck there.” So, they did have a reason to worry. Sarada wouldn’t understand and who knows what danger she’s in. Although that did give him an advantage, if she won’t go time travelling in a flash it should be easy to get to her.

“Yeah, you ARE an idiot! What kind of person designs a rattle for such power? I mean what grown up is going to want that?” Naruto screamed snapping at the older woman completely annoyed, whilst still holding onto a sleeping Boruto. What was she thinking? What was it with older people and their weird ways?

“You were the one who brought it were you not?”

“Why you-”

“ENOUGH!! We aren’t going to get anywhere by screaming. I just want my baby back; you said you could help so do something now.” Although she did agree with Naruto that this woman was rather… batty.

“Sakura’s right, you mentioned about my rinnegan. I need to get to my daughter!”

“Ah, follow me.” The woman walked into another room; Sakura was about to follow before Sasuke halted her grabbing her wrist. She knew that look.

“I’m coming with you.”

“No, it’s best for you to stay home in case Sarada returns.”

“What? No! I can’t do that. She’s my daughter too Sasuke.”

“I’m the one with the rinnegan so odds are I’ll be the only one she can do this with. Besides, if there is a chance she’ll return one of us needs to be there.”

“Sasuke’s right, I know it’s difficult but think of Sarada. She’ll be scared if she’s the only one alone in the house.” Boruto who had now awakened after all the commotion reached with his small hand to place on Sakura’s. As if he was also trying to comfort her. She smiled softly appreciating the gesture but how was a mother not to worry about their child.

“Fine.” She didn’t like it, yet what choice did she have. Sasuke took her by surprise by grabbing hold of her hand and kissing her knuckles softly.

“I promise I’ll find our daughter; I won’t let anything happen to her.”

She didn’t doubt him one bit.

The shopping had been a successful trip but unnecessary in Sasuke’s opinion since now they had too much clothing for Mayumi. And yet she was smiling away in Sakura’s arms having a fun time whilst he and Naruto were the ones carrying the luggage. How did they get themselves into this situation again? Yet he didn’t have it in him to refuse their proposal on going to the park.

“This looks like a great spot, you two can put the bags down here.” Sakura pointed to a tree with shade, they were right next to the playground equipment, but Mayumi would be too young for them anyway.

“Ee gab!” Sarada agreed nodding. Oh, how generous of them Sasuke could only roll his eyes.

“Finally!” Naruto collapsed onto the grass. “Man going shopping is worse than taking missions.”

“Quit being dramatic. It’s called being a gentleman, you can’t let a lady carry her own bags.”

“What about equal rights?” Naruto grumbled as Sakura stuck out her tongue. She then turned to Mayumi. “Isn’t that right Mayumi, they’re strong boys. They can handle a little heavy lifting.” The girl giggled agreeing with everything her mother was saying.

On the outside, Sakura was laughing having fun but inside dreading on how to bring up the topic of letting Mayumi go. The longer she stayed with Sasuke -with them- the harder it would be for him to give her up. Even if she wasn’t an Uchiha, it wouldn’t break the bond they formed.

Although would that be a simple solution?

To suggest a DNA test to prove Mayumi and him weren’t related. Sure, it would still be difficult to say goodbye but perhaps it would make him see sense in that he couldn’t keep her and who knows. Perhaps her parents were alive and looking for her. She could have been kidnapped and left forgotten or maybe something did happen to them.

Either way, she would be safer with the adults, right?

The three of them were now sitting down the cool grass as Sarada sat in the middle playing with the grass and mud. Sasuke kept trying to take it away from her before she could put it in her mouth. It seemed she enjoyed exploring by seeing what could ‘eat.’ Including Sakura’s hair.

“It’s nice to hang out like this without the stress of any missions.” Sakura commented, it wasn’t like either she or Naruto were opposed to the idea of meeting up outside of missions. Kakashi even encouraging them too, but Sasuke wasn’t really one to socialise.

“Yeah, and to think you didn’t want any part of this eh Sasuke?”

“Weren’t you the one complaining about carrying the bags?” He remarked keeping his eyes on Mayumi trying to pry the grass out of her hands. She had a strong grip for sure.

“Hey-” Sakura sighed, they couldn’t enjoy the peace and not bicker for one day? Good grief.

“So, are you actually going to keep her?” And by ‘her’ the two knew he was referring to Mayumi. Leave it to Naruto to bring up such a sensitive question. But knowing him, he probably didn’t realise that it was one to begin with. Should she stop him before things get out of hand?

“She’s my responsibility, where else is she going to go?” Said baby crawled over to Sakura wanting to be on her lap as she lost interest in eating the grass.

“Hey, I know that, but you told us that your goal was to kill a certain someone right? How can you do that and look after Mayumi-Chan?” It was a valid question, and one Sasuke still didn’t have an answer for. He knew at most that he would have to give up on looking for Itachi if he wanted to take care of the baby. But what if Itachi appears and he wasn’t strong enough to keep her safe?

He couldn’t lose another person, especially as she was a baby who had no fault or idea on what happened. But if he gave her up, there was still a chance that whoever she would end up with not being strong enough to look after her either. If word did get out of her being an Uchiha, he would show up to find her.

No matter what, there was no answer in Sasuke’s mind, but he would protect Mayumi at all costs.

Surprisingly Naruto shrugged not waiting for him to reply.

“Eh? I’m sure we’ll think of something!”

There was that ‘we’ again.

“We?”

“Yeah, we! We’re a team now, Kakashi said so himself. So, we’ll come up with something together on how to look after Mayumi.”

Sakura inwardly facepalmed. She should have seen this coming and whilst she would love nothing more than to keep Mayumi, with them being ninjas and taking on missions. The idea of keeping a baby seemed laughable. Who would look after her whilst they were all gone?

Her own parents?

“Right Sakura-Chan?” Naruto turned to her, expecting her to agree.

“Eh? Well…” What could she say? She knew Kakashi wanted her to talk Sasuke over but if even Naruto was on his side, then it was two against one wasn’t it. Three if Mayumi counted herself with her big eyes looking up at her adoringly.

“It’s… it’s going to be hard work. I even hear taking care of a baby can be more challenging than missions.” Because looking after one is permanent whereas with missions, at least afterwards you can rest up.

“I’ll manage, I don’t need your help.”

“But Sakura-Chan’s right, it is hard work. Which is why you WILL need our help, and we’ll work better as a team.” That wasn’t exactly what Sakura was going for, she sweat dropped. Sakura admired Naruto’s attitude and wanting to keep them as a family, but they were only twelve. It would be too much for them to be parents.

“Even so-”

“Watch out!!” Someone called as a football swung spinning towards them almost aiming for Sakura and Sarada. Sasuke stood up blocking it with ease as Sarada watched. Her eyes sparkled amazed at how effortlessly her Papa was able to save them from the ball.

“You should be more careful next time.” Sasuke told the two boys as they ran up to get their ball back. They both bowed apologetically towards Sakura and Sarada.

“We’re sorry.”

In response there was a gurgle from Sarada’s tummy, and she looked up to her mother expectingly wanting food.

“I guess she’s the only one who hasn’t eaten yet.” Sakura smiled waving her hand to dismiss and let them go. Talk about timing, perhaps speaking to him privately about it would be a better idea.

“Ah, I have her food here.” Sasuke stated ruffling through the bag. He came prepared with bringing extra clothes, food and even a small plushie to keep her distracted if necessary. Sakura continued to hold Mayumi whilst Sasuke found a spoon and scooped up the glob intending to feed it to Mayumi.

She merely looked at it and him blankly, confused as to why she wasn’t eating it he tried bringing the food closer and she snubbed him. Turning her head away refusing to eat.

Oh no, she wasn’t going to make him do that now was she?

In front of them?

Yet Mayumi continued to stare and smile as if waiting for something which confused his two teammates.

“You enjoy torturing me, don’t you?” An ‘angelic’ smile appeared on her face as she clasped her tiny hands together waiting patiently.

“Fine, he- here comes the train…” Sasuke awkwardly said with a light blush. At hearing the Uchiha attempting to ‘coo’ Naruto couldn’t help but burst into a fit of laughter. Which annoyed Sasuke but he tried to ignore him and concentrated on Mayumi.

He’ll kill him later.

“She has you wrapped around her finger, doesn’t she?” Sakura giggled as the girl happily began to eat munching away. Oh, she knew very well of the power she had on him.

She was Papa’s Princess.

After eating Sarada made some motion wanting to be put down on the grass again. The little girl crawled over to her Papa who was right in front of she and her Mama and slightly tugged his hand so she could place it onto Mama’s that was resting on the grass hoping they would get the message. The two found themselves staring at one another confused at what was happening until Sakura felt her face turn red with how close they were.

“What are you two doing?” Naruto looked at them suspiciously.

“Nothing!!” They both said in union pulling their hands away startling Sarada.

She pouted folding her arms.

Her parents were stubborn.

“It’s getting late now. I should go back home.” With all the fun they’ve been having neither realised how quickly the time went. Sakura attempted to pass Mayumi back over to Sasuke, as if he also doesn’t have bags of clothing to carry but he’ll let Naruto do the work.

It was just as much his fault anyway.

However, Sarada had refused to let go of Sakura instead quickly took hold of her sleeve whilst she was back in Sasuke’s arms on the verge of tears. She didn’t understand why Mama was leaving again and not going home with her and Papa like she would normally do. Was she still upset with Papa? Haven’t they made up yet?

What if Papa cries later in the night again because he misses Mama?

Noticing the distress Sakura bent down to her ruffling her hair whilst gently prying her off.

“It’s okay sweetie, I’ll see you tomorrow, okay? We all need to go home now.” Again, Sarada quickly took hold of Sakura’s dress, refusing to let go. She gave her the biggest puppy dog eyes she could muster and wanted to cry. Couldn’t Mama see that they needed her?

“Wow, she’s really attached to Sakura-Chan.” Sasuke had no idea what was up with this girl, they’ve known each other for about a day and yet she wouldn’t leave Sakura’s side.

“What exactly do you want? For her to stay and have a sleepover?” And sure, enough in a blink of an eye Sasuke found his teammates at his house for a ‘sleepover.’ With all three futons spread across the floor. Mayumi would share with the two of them. He didn’t mean it but no matter how many times they tried they couldn’t pry Mayumi off Sakura.

It was almost comical.

“A baby’s strength shouldn’t be this strong!” He thought as he tried to pull her away. Even when they were successful, she somehow managed to snag onto something else. Either her hair, another piece of clothing and at one point somehow, she was no longer in his arms and clinging to Sakura’s leg.

Could she teleport or something?

He finally relented and went with the idea of a sleepover, this also meant Naruto had to join to which he greatly appreciated. It would feel weird and awkward if Sakura was the only one here, given all the stunts Mayumi has pulled. If he didn’t know any better, it was almost like she was trying to push them together.

Perhaps in a way it did make sense the more he thought about it.

With the way they were acting, you could say they did act like parents to her and parents wouldn’t separate so to her it was probably confusing on why they had to go to their own homes now. But Sakura couldn’t move in with them.

Maybe overtime she’ll lose interest.

Maybe…

He looked over the two, she was again in Sakura’s lap watching her speak to Naruto.

“Hey, hey!! Let’s tell each other ghost stories, that’s what normally happens right?”

“In front of Mayumi?” Was that wise?

“Oh, come on Sakura-Chan, she’s not going to understand.” He pointed out as she was looking up at him curiously sucking on her hand. “See?”

“I’d still rather not risk frightening her, what if the story is too scary for you and you scare her?” Sakura teased Naruto knowing what he was like. He made a dramatic pose pretending to be hurt and offended but clasped his hands in a begging motion.

“Come on, pleeease. Just one?” Sakura looked over at Sasuke hoping he would make him see sense, but he merely shrugged not seeing the big deal.

“Only one, I’d much rather get some sleep.” Going on a mission and taking care of a baby at the same time was exhausting.

“Gee, your fun.” Naruto muttered but grateful Sasuke was on his side for a change.

“So, who’s got one?”

.

For someone was eager to stay up late listening to ghost stories Naruto quickly fell asleep after Mayumi with his arms and legs sprawled out on the floor. The two couldn’t help but smile lightly, in a way Naruto wasn’t much different from a child himself.

Speaking of which, the little girl was in the middle between Sasuke and Sakura. He didn’t trust Naruto enough knowing he would hit her in the face. At least this way she was still with Sakura and safely tucked in-between them.

“Sasuke-Kun, can I speak with you?” She knew he would want to sleep but with the two of them being the only ones awake now was the perfect time.

“This is about what you were going to say before isn’t it?” Nothing could get past him.

“Well…”

“You don’t think I should keep Mayumi?” He wasn’t surprised she felt this way, Sakura was smart and thought things through strategically. And in most cases, he would too but this was something bigger, more complicated and with too many emotions in the way.

Sakura knew that deep down Sasuke knew the truth about Mayumi.

That there was a good chance they weren’t related, but…

“It’s just… we don’t know if she’s really an Uchiha-”

“Of course she is!” He was still in denial.

“You may believe so but think about it, if she is an Uchiha that could only mean she’s related to a certain someone. Do you really believe your brother would get another woman pregnant after… what with…” She couldn’t bring herself to bring up the Uchiha massacre. It wasn’t something you could blurt out to make a point but even so why would Itachi get another woman pregnant (even if it was by accident) given he was the one who killed everyone.

None of it made any sense with the image they have of the man and given Mayumi’s age; it was impossible for her to be a baby that ‘survived’ the massacre as Sasuke himself was so young at the time.

Wouldn’t she at least be a little older?

“I knew I shouldn’t have confided in you.” That stung.

“That’s not fair.”

“What’s not fair is you expecting me to give up the only family I have remaining. And given how attached she is to you as well I’m surprised; you’re so easily agreeing to this.”

He had her there, and it wasn’t like this was easy for her either. She looked down at the young one who was still snoozing peacefully.

“It’s not like it doesn’t hurt me any less, of course I feel a bond with Mayumi. I mean she’s adorable, but I also know I’m not ready to take such a full responsibility. And I know you know better too Sasuke. We have no idea who she is, what if she was kidnapped and there’s someone out there looking for her.” Despite how low their voices were, Sarada still stirred feeling the tension and hearing her parents arguing. They hadn’t even noticed she was awake looking up at them worryingly.

“You don’t need to get involved. I told you she’s my responsibility, not yours or Naruto’s!”

He never asked for their help to begin with.

“I know but-” She stopped when Sasuke got up abruptly halting her from speaking. “If that’s how you truly feel, then you should leave.” He wasn’t sure what hurt the most, hearing the harsh truth or that Sakura wasn’t taking his side. And to think Mayumi made a fuss of her and yet Sakura was so willing to let her go.

She felt a pang in her chest but knew better than to argue further. Sakura wanted to help, to make Sasuke realise that keeping the baby was wrong and selfish. Sure, she understood why, but there was no concrete proof of her being an Uchiha. He wasn’t being fair to himself or to Mayumi.

“I’m sorry.” She didn’t know what else to say.

Watching and feeling the warmth from her parents vanish, Sarada rolled on her side quickly trying to reach Mama before she left.

“Am am aaah,” no matter how hard Sarada tried to say Mama nothing but baby sounds came out. She wanted to cry and call for her, hoping that saying her name would bring her back, but the door closed and Sarada had no way to stop her.

.

She hadn’t meant for things to turn the way they did but sometimes she would act before thinking. A habit she hated, with all the running Sakura hadn’t noticed a man in front of her and bumped into him before she could stop herself.

“Oh, excuse me.” The man froze at hearing a familiar voice. He let out a cough but didn’t bother to look at her. “It’s fine, be more careful.” And he quickly vanished before she could get a good look at him.

Odd.

That was a close call. Sasuke thought to himself, he had only gotten here and despite what the woman had said he didn’t want to risk walking around as ‘himself.’ The best thing to do would be to disguise himself and then he could go and ask the whereabouts of Sarada.

Notes:

I know I said this was going to be filled with fluff (and it still will be) but I had to throw in some drama 😆

I'm so happy I finally managed to finish and post this. Hope you enjoy the chapter^^
