Danger Zone: A Klance Top Gun AU

Summary:

Over on Twitter, when I got near 100 follows back in March, I asked people if they wanted a specific klance art. I got a sports au request, and my damaged brain decided to do the greatest sports scene in film: the Top Gun volleyball scene. Keith is Maverick, the hothead, hot shot fighter pilot. And Lance is his fiercest rival for Garrison Top Gun, Iceman.

I didn't intend it to be more than a one shot art, but it kinda caught on, and now, well, it's a comic. I'm posting here just to have it all in one place, updates when I can. This story is all art in comic style.

Notes:

I love Top Gun. It's such a fun and unintentionally gay movie that it's impossible to hate. It's also so perfect for klance that I couldn't believe it hadn't been done yet. Anyways, I'm pretty new to fan art and I've never done a comic before, so there's gonna be a lot of trial and error and figuring stuff out, especially at first. I've got the intro and the first 2 pages to start here. After that it'll be a page at a time.

I do have pretty much a full story outlined for this. It's got the classic klance miscommunication, rivalry, unspoken attraction, flirting, angst, hurt comfort, and a happy ending. There will be a character injury down the road, I'll give a tw when that's happening.

Also, as of the time I'm posting this, Top Gun is available to watch on Netflix (US), and Top Gun: Maverick (the long, not really awaited sequel) is about to premiere!

This is a LOT of text, but, Shiro's a talker, what can you do? Anyways, ALL the dialog is from the movie, BECAUSE IT'S PERFECT. Don't worry, I'll start having some original stuff soon... :)

Summary:

Lance should probably learn when it's best to shut up lol.

So, like I said, this is all a big learning experiment for me because I'm so new. You're gonna see me try out new styles, tweaks, whatever as these pages go on. I'm trying to get better at this, and you don't get better doing the same thing all the time, right? I'm sorry if that makes for a bit of inconsistency in the comic. Although it's Voltron and Top Gun, these aren't the sacred texts lol. Also, Lance's face in the last panel might be may personal fav of all the Lance face's I've draw so far. God I love that boy.

Chapter 5: Page Six

Summary:

Shiro is the world's beefiest optimist. Also SPACE HUSBANDS!!!!! Adam is Jester :)

Notes:

It took me a bit of back and forth to figure out the helmets. Mostly I didn't want to include the oxygen masks so that their faces weren't mostly covered. I might have them wear the masks at some times if it suits the scene, but let's just believe in the Voltron magic that most of the time they do not need oxygen.

KLANCE DOGFIGHT!

I am so excited that the next few pages are just going to be Lance and Hunk bff banter while in a dogfight with Keith. It's perfect. I made some executive decisions to simplify the flight suits, helmets, and cockpit. I don't have endless time here people. <3

Chapter 7: Page Eight

Summary:

Keith is proving to be a greater challenge than Lance anticipated.

Notes:

What? New page, who dis? Ok, so I've got no posting schedule for this comic. I loosely have an idea of updating it once a month, but comics are super time consuming and I'm just doing this for grins and giggles, so mostly I do a page when I feel like it. And, even though I just posted a page a couple days ago, I felt like doing another one. I really love this dogfight scene. It's probably going to go on for another 5-6 pages, so I hope you enjoy it too lol

Chapter 8: Page Nine

Summary:

The dogfight continues. And if you've seen Top Gun, then you probably know what Keith is doing :)

Notes:

As I have said many times before, I started this comic so early into my art (and klance) journey that it's become as much about me learning to draw as anything else. When I first started this back in April (?), I sort of looked at every page as a chance to practice everything I was learning at that point. And while it's true that every drawing is practicing, I've recognized that throwing everything I've got at every page is slowing my progress down considerably. I had what I believe is called a "come to Jesus" moment with myself, and realized that at this point (about a year into drawing klance), what I want for this comic is to focus on the storytelling and not practicing whatever new thing I've learned about art on every page.

I like having nice lineart, but I've been trying to find ways to cut back on some details and go a bit simpler with shadows and colors. At one point I considered not coloring it at all, but I, personally, just like the color, so it stays :) Anyway, while design on this comic is an evolving thing, I do have a super fun, very klance story outlined for this that I hope now might go a bit faster (I'm anxious to share it with you all!).
