Boot- March 19th

Summary:

The next morning and the start of 'Jasmine Harper's new life, can she find a place to call home.

Continuation of my JAY/ROY Wild West Mail Order Brides arc.

Notes:

Cant_Smoke_Eggs started a series 365 days of Suffering
where they basically write a fic every single day of 2022

The only rule I have is 1k+ words and it has to be at least loosely based on the word of the day. So, a week or so ago I generated a random single word for every single day of the year in a stream call. - Their Rules

Ok, I'm not completely Insane so my rules are different, 500 word minimum and still based on the words on their list but I'm only going to commit to seven a month

Completed words: Jan-7 Feb-6 Mar-4 April-4 May-0 June-5 July-3

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Just as Roy warned there was a little girl shaped bullet that hit the bed early the next morning. With some expert wiggling and only one knee to a kidney (Roy’s) she managed to wedge herself between the two of them.

“Hello Sheʼatʼééd, how are you doing this morning?” Roy asked.

“I’m hungry.”

Jason laughed a little at that pronouncement, he smiled over at the other two people in the bed.

“I guess we'll just have to make you breakfast then, won’t we princess?” he said to her.

“Yep.” The young girl’s eyes lit up at the chance to do something with her new mom.

“Sure thing princess,” Jason said, “let’s get dressed and then we can see what we have to make for breakfast.”

“Ladies, I’ll leave you two to the kitchen, I’m gonna head out to the barn and check on the animals.” Roy said, slipping out from under the covers. He grabbed a pair of trousers and a shirt then he made to walk away from the bed but Lian stopped him.

“Daddy, you forgot something.” she called out.

“Oh, what did I forget?” he patted his chest and waist, amusement coloring his voice as he started their little game. “I got my shirt and pants. What more do I need Sheʼatʼééd?”

“Daaadyy.” Lian whined.

“It looks like you forgot your boots.” Jason said innocently from the other side of Lian.

“Oh of course.” Roy smiled as he put on his boots. The two adults tried to hide their laughter as Lian rolled her eyes and pouted.

“Quit being silly, you forgot my kiss.”

“Oh dear, how could I forget such a thing?” He teased, leaning over the bed to get to her. “I guess I will just have to give you a few more to make up for it.” Roy peppered her face in quick little kisses until she was giggling so hard she could barely breathe.

“I’m gonna head out now, you be good for Jasmine, okay Sheʼatʼééd?”

“Daddy, you have to kiss Momma too.” Lian looked at him with wide innocent eyes. Roy froze a minute, he wasn’t sure if his kisses would be welcome, but how do you tell a seven year old that?

“Ummm,” he looked at Jason with a pleading look in his eyes.

“Yeah, you forgot my kiss too.” Jason smirked over at Roy even as a blush colored his cheeks.

“We can’t have that then.” Roy leaned across Lian and brushed a strand of Jason’s hair behind his ear. Then he gently pressed a kiss to his lips. Roy lingered as long as he dared, slowly pulling away and looking into his wife's eyes seeing his own desire mirrored back at him.  Roy let his hand fall away from his face before smiling and heading outside.

Jason got up and got dressed, then he and Lian went to the kitchen to see what he had to work with.

About an hour later Roy came back in to find Jasmine with a simple pale dress on with a red kerchief covering her hair. Lian was standing next to her on an overturned bucket with her hair covered by a smaller kerchief. Roy fell a little more in love with the woman he married. He’d hoped for a kind and gentle woman for Lian’s sake even more than even a companion for himself. Roy watched as Jasmine showed his daughter how to turn the johnny cakes on the griddle. It looks like Jasmine was exactly the kind of lady he hoped to find.

After breakfast Lian and Roy showed Jay the barn. Lian introduced her to all the animals and took special care to show Jay her horse.

“Daddy caught this one just for me,” Lian pointed to the large stallion, “his name is Winddancer.”

“You tamed a mustang for a seven year old?” Jason turned to Roy in disbelief.

“My people start riding very young, she was actually four when I caught him for her.” Roy explained.

Roy knew it was unusual for such a small girl to ride a powerful creature like the half wild horse.  He tried to build up in his daughter the same connection he had with nature, the one he’d learned with his first family, the one that set him apart from the local townspeople. He waited for the scorn and derision that he’d experienced from the others who found out he still practiced as much of his traditions as he could. It never came.

“As fast as he is you must have been a speed demon to catch him.” Jason said teasingly, a look of awe on his face.

Roy blushed a bit at the praise. He continued on the tour of the rest of the homestead, showing her where to get fresh water, the garden, his workshop and the other outbuildings.

“I got to be honest, Speedy, I did not expect you to have such a large homestead.” Jason whistled at the largess.

“Us, you mean, for us to have a large home, this is your home now too.” Roy said gently.

“Yeah, I guess it is.” Jason agreed. He wanted this new family, this new start more than he thought possible.

He picked up Lian who had started nodding off to sleep a little while ago. Roy reached over and held Jasmine’s hand as they took the tired child into the house for a nap
