Emmet is once again wrapped up in his phone. It is a lot easier to text you in the morning when he doesn’t have to rely on the internet. It’s another slow day on the double trains, a typical Monday. If any challengers had the time they would usually take Ingo’s single battle train instead of Emmet’s due to convenience. Double battles weren’t really favored amongst trainers.
So he waited in the train car, pacing around with his phone in his hands. He was particularly enraptured in this conversation about Combee breeding.

Emmet comes to the end of the train car, spins, and continues his pacing. He taps the top end of his phone to his chin in thought. His insides feel like a bundle of joltiks, zapping his stomach and making it hurt with anxiety. The subway boss really wanted to ask you an important question but he had no idea how to pose it.
He desperately wanted to ask you on a date but how? You were a whole half of the planet away, it wasn’t like he could just take you to a café. If you were here in front of him, he’d have no qualms. He could see your face, judge your reactions appropriately, and be able to conduct his train to its appropriate destination.
But you weren’t here and that was causing his train to instead be run on an endless loop. He told Ingo he was just going to tell you that he likes you but Ingo said that seemed a bit fast.
He hears the train car door sliding open behind him and, with a quick practiced motion, Emmet stuffs his phone in his coat pocket and turns around on a dime. He strikes his familiar pose and speaks the words he’s rehearsed a thousand times.
"I am Emmet. I am a Subway Boss. I like Double Battles. I like combinations of two Pokémon. And I like winning more than anything else. So let's start a great battle in which every Pokémon uses various moves."
It’s a fairly quick battle. The trainer, a young and jittery little boy who reminds Emmet a lot of a Joltik, is obviously not quite ready to battle the boss yet. He panics and loses due to a few reckless moves. It’s over in ten minutes but Emmet is still proud of him for putting up a decent fight. They both recall their Pokemon and Emmet offers a hand to shake. The boy accepts it with a sad smile.
Emmet once again runs through his usual lines.
"I am Emmet. I won against you. But I think I just got lucky. In a Double Battle, if you misread one thing, the rest will be totally different. You know. Please win 20 battles in a row, and fight with me!"
“I will! Next time, I’ll beat you!” The boy says determined.
It makes Emmet genuinely smile.
“Yup! Come back soon!”
The boy leaves. Emmet waits again. He waits for ten minutes. Still no challengers. He pulls out his phone again. There are a couple new messages from you.
Y/n 🐝❤️: Got a challenger?
Y/n 🐝❤️: Talking to you makes
me think about battling again.
Y/n 🐝❤️: Its been a bit since
ive trained my team

It’s a perfect distraction from Emmet’s burning question. You send pictures of what you had on your phone of your different team members. You go down the list in no particular order: Vespiquen, of course, Drapion, Heracross, Scizor, and Yanmega. Araquanid used to also be a part of this team, but now he was Emmet’s. Emmet would repay you with a Joltik later, of course.

Emmet peers at the time on the top of the screen. It’s nearly 12 pm. His gut sinks.

nervous about tomorrow
Y/n 🐝❤️: Besides, I like talking

Emmet’s heart flutters in his chest like a Butterfree. He wrings out his right hand and flaps it, needing to release the small rush your words gave him. He then brings his hand to his chin, closes his fist and pops his knuckles against his jaw. That felt better. He goes back to texting.

Solaceon holds a big fall festival

If you were with Emmet in person, you would have probably laughed at his expression at the moment. His eyebrow raised up and he gasped audibly, his thumbs flew across the text board as he passionately showed his disdain for the lack of public transport.

His double train line is coming close to the end of the track, signaling Emmet’s time for a break. He shoots you a quick text that he’ll be busy with a few maintenance checks as the train slowly comes to a nice stop. Shaking his legs out a bit, he loves riding the trains but sometimes he swears he can still feel the annoying vibrations even after it stops, before walking down through all the cars. He makes sure that no one is loitering and that there’s no litter before walking off to his shared office with Ingo.
“Good afternoon, Emmet.” Ingo greets him. He holds out an extra coffee chp and a take out bag which the younger twin graciously accepts. “How was the double train?”
Emmet takes a long sip from his coffee. Pure black. Just how he liked it.
“Boring.” He replies to Ingo tersely. “Only five challengers. I hate Mondays.”
“Hm. The single train didn’t fare much better.” Ingo messes with his take out box, prodding his fork at some noodles as he thought. “Perhaps making Mondays our day off would be beneficial.”
“That would be preferable.”
Ingo nodded and picked up a pen to jot down notes. Emmet shoveled food into his mouth. Yum. Teriyaki Combusken. He texts you between bites.

Emmet stops mid bite at the sight of the heart you have sent him. He can read between the lines. You're hinting at something. His smile widens and he ignores Ingo's questioning at his grin as his thumbs quickly go to respond before you fall asleep.
