Unravel

Summary:

That was the key, you learned quickly. Looking without thinking, letting your heart do the work for you.

Notes:

Prompt was "Nepeta using weird heart powers."

Work Text:

You started out just feeling. Little tugs when two trolls met eyes, like plucking a string and feeling it vibrate. You've always had an exceptional "shipurr's instinct", and at first this reaction seemed like a natural consequence of meeting up with your friends face to face. That didn't stop you from paying attention to it, though, and soon they weren't just fleeting glimpses of potential emotions, they were physical sensations that you could see faint glimmers of in the air if you looked but didn't think.

That was the key, you learned quickly. Looking without thinking, letting your heart do the work for you.

And to your delight, the connections really were like strings that linked you all, intersecting and tangling and breaking but all from the same ball of yarn. Well, you figured out that last part later. Maybe if you'd been a seer, it would've been obvious from the start, and then...but what's done is done.

Most of your time on the meteor was spent exploring these strings and what they meant. Bafflingly, no matter how hard you tried, you could not distinguish between the quadrants the strands represented. Perhaps it was another seer thing that, as a rogue, you simply couldn't understand? Maybe. You don't think so, but you've been wrong before.

Much of what you found was obvious, like the bright, solid rope connecting you and Equius, perhaps the strongest bond that any of you shared. More confusing were the many tenuous lines branching out from Eridan, flimsy but undeniably there. He was always trying to reach out and strengthen them, to give a tug on one to make sure it was sound, but he always yanked too hard and was left even lonelier than before, strings more tattered and worn with every pull. It was painful to watch, and you were heartbroken that you couldn't help, until you realized that you could.

You knew you were a Hero of Heart. You thought it was your destiny.

And all you had to do was unfocus, stop thinking and start feeling, look into your heart and just sort of reach over...and...

Snap.

A ball of yarn is only one string, and everything unraveled around you. With the string went Eridan, then Gamzee, then Kanaya, and by then it was far too late. You were no sylph. You couldn't fix this. You are a rogue. All you can do is take.
