Chapter Text
Camille spent most of her nights dreaming about how and if Richard and herself would get together. In her mind there was no if, (unless they had a bad day at work and had a fight, then she didn’t even want to know him), otherwise it was definitely going to happen. He was on the island nearly two years by now, even he must have picked up on the tension between them and recognised it for what it was, mustn’t he? He couldn’t be that dense, could he?
So until the “if” happened, she contented herself with the how, her dreams ranging from the mundane to the ridiculous, some romantic, some extremely sexual, depending on her mood that particular night.
Richard was striding out the beach to his shack, the tension evident in his posture, his shoulders raised, doing his best to ignore his partner who was about twenty feet behind him, keeping pace with him. He hoped no one had seen them or more importantly could hear what she was saying/shouting at him.
“You were definitely flirting with her, don’t deny it, you fancy her don’t you!!”
He turned abruptly to her, hissing while trying to keep his voice down,
“How many times do I have to tell you Camille that I wasn’t flirting with her!!”
He turned away and resumed his striding. She kept following him, berating him,
“But you haven’t said you don’t fancy her, so that means you do”, thinking she had landed the killer blow.
He turned quickly again, she was closer to him, catching him up,
“For the love of god, I don’t fancy her. But, I’m allowed to if I want to, I can flirt with people or fancy them if I want to, I’m not sure why you’re so bothered by it, you’re not my mother or my wife, I don’t have to ask your permission, do I? I will never understand you. Why do you care?”
He carried on walking, until her next missive, it was whispered and he wasn’t sure if what he heard was what she actually said, so he turned again, except she’d caught up with him and as he turned, he fell against her, both of them falling to the sand in a tumble, somehow Camille ended up on top of him, afterwards he would try to work out how she had managed that as the smaller and lighter of the two, but for the time being he was on the bottom and had to admit, he didn’t really mind. They were both panting, out of breath from the brisk walk and the even brisker shouting. There was no denying his body's fairly immediate reaction to their position, he knew from Camille's face that she had felt it, and the smile grew on her face.
“You know what, I actually believe you, you don’t fancy her. But I think, there’s evidence you might fancy someone else?”
Confident now of her position, she lent down and kissed him, leaving him in no doubt as to her intentions. He reacted more decisively than she’d expected, flipping their position quickly so he was on top of her. After five minutes of kissing, he managed to say,
“Not here, not on the beach”, he stood up quickly, pulled her to her feet, caught her by the hand and resumed his brisk walk to the shack, not five minutes away. As they reached the veranda, he pulled her to him, resumed their kissing whilst attempting to undress himself and her simultaneously. They managed to get to the bed, stumbling as they shed various items of clothing and ……..nine months later baby Daniel Bordey-Poole was born.

Camille stood at the altar, staring at the man across from her she was about to marry. She was wearing a white frothy dress that Scarlet O’Hara would have rejected for being too flamboyant, and had a parasol open over her head, indoors. Her hair was in tight ringlets, flowers scattered through it, reaching down her back. Her groom was well over six foot tall, burly, dark, brooding and holding her hand too tightly. She wasn’t sure how she’d gotten to this stage but it was clear the wedding was to go ahead. She could hear her mother quietly sobbing with happiness behind her, dressed equally as ridiculous as she was.
When the priest stated “If anyone objects to this marriage, speak now or forever hold your peace”, the door to the church slammed open, the congregation gasped and turned as one to look, and HE stood there. The sun was behind him, so he appeared like a god from the heavens with rays of sunlight shooting out in all directions. He had come to save her, she knew he would!
“I object, I love this woman, she loves me and she will not marry this oaf!”
Richard strode up the aisle, his shoulder length locks flowing behind him, he was dressed all in cream, the shirt open to his chest. As he reached the couple at the top of the aisle, he punched the man on his chin, impressive as the groom was nearly a foot taller than him, stunning him so that he fell to the ground in a dead faint, grabbed Camille by the hand, and walked back down the aisle to the sound of cheers from the gathered guests and Catherine’s wails.
Outside stood his trusty steed, waiting patiently for his master and the bride, once Richard had manoeuvred the voluminous skirts and petticoats out of the way, which was no mean feat, he placed Camille on the saddle, jumped up behind her, and they rode off into the sunset. Baby Daniel Poole was born nine months after the wedding that was not.

Camille ran in through the entrance of the hospital, shouting at the nurse on the desk.
“Richard, where is he, is he ok, is he alive?”, tears streaming down her face. He’d been shot less than an hour ago, she hadn’t been allowed in the ambulance with him, Dwayne had run to get the Defender and they’d followed as quickly as they could.
Oh, it was all her fault, they’d had another argument, he was cross with her, distracted, not paying sufficient attention and when she’d shouted “Run!!” at him, instead of doing that he’d turned towards her, the few seconds delay in his reaction sufficient time for the bullet to hit him. He’d fallen with a cry to the ground, as Camille ran to him Fidel managed to get the gun off the shooter and put handcuffs on him quickly. There was blood, too much blood, flowing too quickly, she couldn’t tell where it was coming from, he was unconscious, oh god, he was going to die! She held his hand telling him to hang on, not to give up, not to leave her, that she loved him until the ambulance crew pulled her off him, and bundled him into the ambulance.
The nurse told her where he was, she ran to the emergency room, burst in despite Dwayne's plea to take her time, against the pleas of the doctors and nurses telling her to leave. He was awake, pale, in pain, but alive. She ran to him, grabbing him by the hand and kissing him on the lips, “I love you, I’m so sorry, don’t leave me, I love you”.
“I won’t” he whispered, as she was ushered from the room, Dwayne pulling her out, “I love you too”, she heard from behind her.
Baby Daniel Bordey-Poole was born 10 months later this time, allowing a month for Richard to recover.

Chapter Text
“I’m sorry Camille, I’ve blown it”, Richard said as they got back inside their bedroom. They were undercover as a married couple, Richard and Camille Maxwell, similar names, trying to make it as easy as possible for Richard who had no undercover experience. Which was painfully obvious Camille thought grimly, remembering back to the disaster at dinner. They were tracking a suspected drug dealer, Dexter Grant, had managed to get close enough to score an invitation to his dinner party, sixteen of them around the table. Richard had gotten surlier as the night went on though, ending up mute by the end of it, leaving Camille to do all the heavy lifting, sure that their cover had been blown, no one could possibly believe that such a mismatched couple were married, they might as well have been wearing t-shirts stating “undercover police - please shoot”. She turned towards him, as he cringed, backing up against the wall, waiting for the tongue lashing that was sure to follow.
Dexter Grant let himself into his bedroom, dinner had been odd, he suspected there had been undercover police there, he’d been warned someone was onto him. He’d tried to work out if was a staff member or a guest, wondered had it been that couple Richard and Camille, there was something off about them. But from the sounds coming from the room next door, he’d obviously been wrong. It sounded like an orgy was taking place, they were definitely a couple. He’d quite fancied taking a crack at that Richard, he liked them quiet and moody but that patently wasn’t going to happen now.
So the next day he checked out and moved on to another island, a fact which was completely missed by the undercover officers who didn’t leave their room all day, only answering the door to apologise to the manager for the noise complaints and for room service.
Until an irate Commissioner arrived at their door late that night, to dress them down completely, threatening to send them both! separately! to opposite parts of the globe, as traffic officers! He accompanied them both back to Saint Marie, thoroughly chastened, struggling slightly to walk comfortably, not believing any of their excuses of sickness as to why they had not noticed the departure of their target, especially when Baby Daniel Bordey-Poole was born 9 months later, making liars of them both.
Chapter Text
He’d danced with her, it had eventually happened! They were at her mother’s bar. She’d been pestering him for months about the non dance at Solly’s wake. He’d resisted for months. She’d given him a couple of glasses of one of her mother’s cocktails, telling him it was a new virgin cocktail Catherine was trialling, with the emphasis on the word virgin. He’d blushed like one, but took her explanation at face value.
Just a couple to get him to relax, maybe let down his guard a bit. She’d also changed the playlist and made sure the music was appropriate, nothing with a fast beat but nothing overly sensual either until she’d captured her quarry. It had been easier than she’d expected, but she didn’t know he was tired of being chased, wanted to get caught. He’d pretended, he’d resisted and then he submitted.
They’d ended out on the terrace of the bar where it was quieter and they weren’t under the knowing smirks of Fidel and Dwayne. It had heated up quickly though, the alcohol pulsing through both their veins. Camille was surprised when Richard muttered in her ear was her room in her mother’s apartment still empty, was the bed still there?
She had expected that she’d have to persuade him, would have been happy with just dancing and kissing but instead he was the one moving towards the stairs, pulling her impatiently behind him. She then realised he was the captor and she’d been the quarry all along.
Baby Daniel Bordey-Poole was born 9 months later, Catherine secretly amused, supposed to be unaware as to the location of his conception. She would reserve that knowledge for future mortification if necessary.
Chapter Text
In the end, it didn’t happen like any of the scenarios she’d imagined, in fact it nearly didn’t happen at all.
Richard's transfer papers came in bright and early one Friday morning, he had less than 2 weeks to tidy up any loose ends, pack all his belongings and return to London for his new posting. After a week in the station where tempers were frayed, words were spoken and regretted on both sides, and a very downbeat goodbye party in La Kaz, Camille drove Richard home to his shack for the last time. The Commissioner was to collect him first thing next morning to drop him to the airport and collect the new DI simultaneously. As she parked, the tears started and flowed down Camille's face, Richard was struggling to keep his own in check.
He didn’t want to go, but it was too late now, wasn't it? Did he really care though anymore? Where had playing by the book gotten him, being tossed from one side of the Atlantic to the other and back again, no real personal life. He needed to try, to change something, take a leap of faith. Would she jump with him though, looking at her he thought yes. He reached for her, pulled her across the gear stick and onto his lap. He hugged her tightly, burying his head in the nape of her neck, nuzzling her and just breathing in her fragrance, letting her breathing settle. He lifted his head, stared at her and gently wiped the tears from her cheek and moved towards her, kissing her gently on the mouth.
Early next morning, the Commissioner arrived in his car to collect the Inspector to drive to the airport. He frowned, the jeep was parked haphazardly at the side of the shack. As he walked around the jeep, he saw the passenger door was open, Poole’s briefcase was still lying on the floor. Then his eyes were drawn to a trail of clothing leading to the veranda. He smirked, he did enjoying putting Poole on the spot, maybe he should inform him of the creepy crawlies that might have taken up residence overnight in his clothes.
As he walked around the veranda and peered in the door, he saw Richard wrapped around Camille who was awake, where he obviously wasn’t.
“Am I to assume the inspector no longer requires a lift to the airport?”
Camille just nodded at him, like the cat that got the cream.
“We will need to have a conversation so at some stage about both your plans, but I will leave you rest for the time being.”
He winked at Camille and left. When Camille heard the car drive away, she nudged Richard who she knew was awake but had been too mortified to talk to Patterson, the both of them burst out laughing before resuming the activities of the previous night.
Baby Daniel Bordey-Poole was born nine months later, accompanied by his younger sister Lara, who arrived a full 10 minutes after him. Catherine was thrilled to have the grandchildren she’d always wanted to spoil. Richard was shell shocked, he’d gone from being untouched by female hands to married with a gentleman’s family in less than a year.
Camille was content, she had no need of her fantasies anymore, real life had surpassed them all.
