Chapter 43: Bells Are Ringing

Chapter Text

Andrea, Rory and Tessa would not stop at me. They kept teasing me all the time.

Did I kiss Jess? No.

Will they ever stop with the teasing? No, of course they won't.

So all I could do was start to make my preparations for California.

Rory and Mom were sorting my room. They made a bring pile and keep at home pile.

But now, we were helping Sookie choose the processional music for her and Jackson's wedding but her first choice sounded a little depressing.

And Mom, Rory and Michel thought the same thing. "Sookie, you can't walk down the aisle to that," Mom simply stated.

"Why not?" Sookie pouted. "It's Ella!"

"It's depressing," Mom told her. "Let's look through the other options."

"I have an idea," Michel piped up. "What is it?" Mom asked him. "I leave," he suggested. "I'm in the wedding so you have to run it," Mom broke the bad news to him.

"Lane and I will come up with some more," Rory suggested. "Okay," Sookie caved. "I have two empty seats because Carl can't come, anyone else you guys want to invite?"

"I've got Lane and Dean," Rory told her. "I have Tessa," I added.

"Then Emily and Richard," she suggested. "Sookie, you are way too sweet," Mom rolled her eyes.

"But she helped me, please ask her, please?"

"Fine," Mom gave in.

My cast was coming off soon so that was a good sign. I can't wait to use my arm again.

"You know what I just realised?" Mom asked us. "Oy, is the funniest word ever."

"I say that all the time," I told her. "No oy is different to oi," Mom told me. "Oi is the scolding thing or shut up thing, that's what you do."

"Then what's oy?" I frowned. "It's just something you smile at," Mom said. "Poodles is a funny word too."

Grandma handed me my coke. "Lorelai, please drink your drink."

"They go well in the same sentence," Mom chuckled. "You'd have a fantastic new catchphrase, like 'Oy, with the poodles already!'"

Me and Rory started laughing. "Dinner's ready Mrs Gilmore," the maid told her.

"Thank you, please inform Mr Gilmore, he's in his den," Grandma instructed her.

We got up and walked to the table. "How was Columbia yesterday?" Grandma asked me. "It was good," I told her. "We know where everything else is."

"Did you have a tour guide?" Grandma asked me. "Yeah," I mumbled.

It was Jess but I wasn't gonna tell them that.

"Anyway," Mom saved me from interrogation. "Sookie invited you and Dad to her wedding."

"When is it?"

"A week from Sunday."

"So a pity invite."

"It's not a pity invite," Mom muttered. "No that's quite alright," Grandma grumbled. "Far be it from me to be included in the first batch of wanted guests."

"It's not a pity invite," Mom repeated. "She wants you to come."

"I don't see any invitations."

"Mom, for God's sake!"

"Apologies," Grandpa interrupted the conversation. "I couldn't get Adamson off the phone."

"Oh, Richard," Grandma called from across the table as he sat down.

"Aye caramba," I muttered.

"Lorelai told me that we are invited to Sookie's weeding," Grandma told him. "When is it?" Grandpa asked her.

"A week from Sunday," she told him.

"So a pity invite," he sussed out. "Aha!" Grandma exclaimed, making Mom jump out of her skin. "Oy, with the poodles already," Mom mumbled.

Me, Rory and Dean sat around the table in Luke's eating our breakfast. Yeah, I'm being a third wheel.

Rory was giving me the puppy eyes. She wanted my pancakes.

"I'm not giving you my pancakes," I stated.

"Evil!" Rory gasped.

"You should have ordered them yourself, you daft idiot," I grumbled.

Dean gave Rory his pancakes in exchange for her eggs. "She'll be the death of you, my friend," I laughed.

"You all packed?" Dean asked me. "Nearly," I said. "Liar," Rory grumbled. "She only sorted out what movies she's gonna watch on the flight."

"Traitor," I grumbled. "Your flight is in six days!" Rory exclaimed.

"I know that," I pointed out. "It doesn't take me six days to pack a bag."

"Bags," Rory corrected me. I rolled my eyes.

"See you later," Rory pecked Dean on the lips. "Get a room," I grumbled. "Third wheel," Rory called after me as I went out the door. I waited at the bus stop and listened to my Walkman, cranking up Blondie.

"BOO!" Rory yelled and I shrieked at the top of my lungs. "Bitch," I grumbled and I took my headphones off.

"I hate you."

"No, you don't."

We sat and listened to Paris' speech that morning. She was campaigning for Student Body President. I signed up to sit on Student Council next year, as did Andrea.

Not that we were keen on politics. Something for the resumés.

"You voting for Paris?" Andrea asked me once assembly was over. "I gave her my word," I pointed out. "Can't believe you're going on Sunday," Andrea pouted.

"We'll be sitting on Student Council, so don't worry, I'll be back to piss you off," I smiled. "So you getting that monstrosity off yet?" Andrea pointed at my arm.

I looked at it. "After school," I muttered. I'll miss it a little, Tessa and Rory made it look nice.

***

"You're not gonna be sad that it's gone?" Mom asked me. "Not really but it looks nice," I mumbled. "So, Vice President?" I looked at Rory.

"Don't remind me," Rory rolled her eyes. "You'd better be on Student Council."

"I am," I told her.

The doctor walked in and smiled at me. "So, Heather, are you ready for this to come off?"

"Ready as I'll ever be," I smiled.

"Wait, which one? This one here?" I heard Dad's voice outside.

"Dad?" me and Rory asked at the same time. Mom opened to door to find a lost Dad.

"Is it still on?" he asked Mom. Dad looked at me and sighed in relief. "Oh thank God, I didn't miss it," he said.

"I can't believe you're here!" Mom gasped in surprise. "I told you I'd be here, you getting sick of me?" Dad feigned hurt.

"Yes," Mom joked.

"Is everyone here?" the doctor asked me. "Think so, unless there's siblings I don't know about," I joked.

"Evil!" Dad gaped. "Yes, everyone's here," I laughed.

"And doctor, if possible, we'd like to keep the arm," Dad chuckled.

The doctor turned on the saw and started cutting the hard cast.

And soon my arm was free.

"Where to next?" Dad asked us once we got back to town. "I have to fix my campaigning platform and help this one pack," Rory pointed at me. "You can't use the arm excuse now."

I rolled my eyes. "The new Hillary Clinton ladies and gentlemen."

"I'm running for Student Body Vice President," Rory told Dad. "If me and Paris win, I'm off to Washington DC for the summer."

"So both of them are abandoning us," Mom laughed. "Heather's in LA and Rory's in DC."

Kirk tapped his glass during the rehearsal dinner. "Who owns the silver Volvo? Because you're blocking me in!"

Everyone groaned, thinking that he was gonna say something else.

"You all packed?" I asked Tessa. "Yeah, are you?" she wondered.

"Yeah, Rory wouldn't stop hounding me," I laughed. "Three more days and it's off to Hotel California, they emailed me the pics of our accommodation."

She pulled out photos and I gasped. "Holy..."

"You have the t-shirt packed?" Tessa asked me. "Yes."

"Polaroid camera?"

"Check."

"Camcorder?"

"Check. Do you have your digital camera?"

"Obviously," Tessa scoffed. "So, what movies do we watch on the plane?" I asked her.

"As much Star Wars on the way, black and white on the way back," Tessa decided.

"Good choice," I smirked and we fist bumped.

The next morning Mom was in a chirpy mood, while I was exhausted and Rory was pissed at Mom eating one of the almond bundles.

"I know something you two don't!" Mom sang. "What," I wondered. "Okay, but first things first, it's not nice to gossip unless it's true," she said.

The phone rang and Rory answered it. "Two more days," Mom cheered. "I can't wait, this is so exciting!" I squealed jumping up and down.

"Paris wants this so badly," Rory told us as she hung up the phone. "Think about it you win, you get a paid vacation," I pointed out.

"Anyway, the gossip," Mom brought the subject back to the table. "Sherry and your dad might break up."

"Really?" Rory asked her. "Yeah, your dad told me," Mom admitted. "Why are you gloating?" I asked Mom. "You're smiling."

"If he was all broken up about it, I'd be sad but he's not," Mom muttered.

"Come on, let's go," Rory tugged on my arm.

***

"Zip me up?" I asked Rory. She zipped up my dress. "Oh my God..Rory?" she joked. "Are you Heather?" I laughed.

We burst into a fit of giggles. "All of your stuff is in the car," Rory told me. She had tears welling up. "Oi, tears, save for wedding, airport and laughing at Jackson in a kilt, promise me?"

"I can't, I'm gonna miss you," Rory mumbled.

We headed over to the Independence Inn for the wedding. "Heather!" Tessa ran up to me in a light green dress. "Today's the day! Today's the day!" we cheered.

"I'm terrified," Tessa grabbed my hands and jumped up and down.

Rory and Dean came over to us. "Can't believe George Lucas and Steven Spielberg won't be here for the summer either," Dean joked. "Remember that little quip once we win an Oscar," Tessa grumbled.

"Wait either?" I looked at Rory. "I'll be in DC," she told me. "Oh congrats!" I cheered and hugged my twin tightly. "Now I'm going to cry at the airport," I pouted. "I'm leaving next week, you're leaving today," Rory pointed out.

"Six hours beside the Hippo," I laughed. Tessa elbowed me hard in the ribs. "Evil!"

"I'm wearing my Walkman in bed," I told her. "Relax, it's a two bedroom apartment," she told me. "I'll still hear you," I snarked.

Tessa rolled her eyes. The two of us walked off. "So, is it true?" Tessa asked me. "Your dad will be around for good?"

"I think so, I hope so," I put a lot of emphasis on the hope.

"Imagine, gone for two months, then come back to see your mom, your dad, your sister, all one big happy family," Tessa smiled. "That'd be amazing," I grinned.

Rory came sprinting up to me. "Sorry Tess, I need my twin."

She grabbed my arm and we started running down the hill. "Rory! Jesus Christ, I'm gonna fall!"

"Sorry but it's an emergency," she said once we stopped at the bottom. "Dad is gonna stay."

"He is?"

"Yep and someone wants to talk to you."

She turned me to the right and I laid eyes on Jess. My face broke into a big grin. I ran over to him and we hugged tightly. "Your cast is gone!" he pointed out. "Yeah, how come you're here?" I asked him, excitedly.

"I moved back here," he told me. "Really?"

"Really."

"Why?" I asked him.

"I just wanted to," he told me, giving me that smile.

I smiled and I leaned in and kissed him. He wrapped his arms around my waist as my hands rested on both sides of his face.

We heard cheering coming from a distance. I broke the kiss and looked Jess in the eye. "I had to say goodbye in person," he explained.

"I must leave more often then," I grinned, leaning back in.

We were kissing for a couple of moments before we were interrupted.

"Hate to break up the moment here but the wedding's gonna start," Rory came over. "I should go," I muttered. "I'll write and I'll call, I promise."

"You'd better," he smiled. Rory dragged me away. "Ah, I got to witness it!" she cheered.

"Oh, shut up."

Rory gaped at me. I pushed her chin up, making her close her mouth. "You'll attract flies."

We walked up and grabbed our bouquets. "He's back," I smiled. "Now you have a boyfriend waiting for you to come back," Rory grinned.

We waited for Mom to come and she walked slowly to the stairs. "I'm going to Washington," Rory muttered. "I'm leaving tonight," I murmured.

Mom didn't say anything as we walked down the aisle.

***

"Are all your bags checked in?" Mrs Sinclair asked Tessa. "Yes Mom," she told her. "And your plane bag," Mr Sinclair handed Tessa the bag.

Rory hugged me tightly and she was crying. "I'm gonna miss you."

"I'll miss you too," I murmured. Mom held onto me tightly. "Have a good time."

"I will," I sobbed. I didn't think I'd be this sad. Mom, Rory and the Sinclairs waved us off.

Dad left again but neither me or Rory knew why. I was upset at that as me and Tessa were walking away from our families.

"I'll be back," Tessa quoted Terminator.

I took a deep breath and said the first quote I could think of.

"Yippee ki yay, motherfucker."
