Chapter 1: chapter 1
Chapter Text
He’s standing in a warehouse district somewhere that he can’t quite place. It's definitely not somewhere he's been before. He tries to move his feet but can’t, he's frozen in place. A rip opens in the wall of the warehouse in front of him. The tear starts small but grows quickly. He can see a pair of hands. It looks like they're ripping a hole in reality. Eventually the hole grows big enough and someone steps though. The most striking thing about them is their yellow eyes.
DJ wakes up. He’s panting heavily as he rolls out of bed.
He's had nightmares before, everyone had that, it was just part of childhood but he’d never had one like that. No, that had felt real in a way he couldn’t explain. It hadn’t felt like a dream. It felt like a vision.
He shook the thought out of his head as he shoved the cereal he had mindlessly poured back into the cupboard. An attempt to push the weird (terrifying) dream out of his head as he ate breakfast by pointlessly scrolling mostly worked.
He doesn’t bother to change out of his PJs. DJ doesn’t have class (his Uni is currently on holidays) or work today so why bother?
No work means another day spent working his way through his dad’s possessions.
Currently he was going through his dad’s wardrobe and finding out quite how large the ratio of flannel shirts is to other clothing items. (he has to joke about it or he’ll cry though every second. He doesn’t want to do this but someone has to and he has no other family to help).
Sometimes he wondered how his dad seemed to have no history, like he’d spawned into the universe the moment he’d met his mum.
He's packing one of dad’s books into a book.
Knife clutched in a hand. Blood splatter. Hand stabbing up and down. Scarlett on white. The body of a woman lying on blood stained carpet.
DJ’s mind slammed back into his body.
What the hell was that?
The nightmare had been easy to play off as just a dream. Its not like dreams so vivid they felt real were unheard off.
This was much harder to brush off.
He ignores it. (what's he going to do about it? Tell someone? Oh yeah I had a vision of someone getting murdered?).
He keeps working his way though dad’s cupboard.
He moves one of the large thick old mythology books his dad had been so fond of (both the obvious stuff and then the more and more obscure. Half of it is from cultures that DJ has never heard of anywhere else). This one looks like it's on some kind of weird bible stuff, angels and demon type. There's a scrap of paper underneath.
He goes to throw it in the trash, assuming that it's probably just some stray bookmark when he turns it over. There's a note on the back.
The text reads ‘in the case of my death or disappearance, call if something weird is going on’, with an arrow pointed to a phone number.
The note is signed ‘S.W’. Sam Winchester. His father.
His dad is dead, and there's something weird going on.
He grabs his phone and types in the number.
It can’t hurt, even if it is just another person he needs to tell.
A woman picks up the phone (he hadn’t been expecting that. He hadn’t expected anyone to pick up at all).
“Hello” she says, like she was expecting this as little as he was, “this is Jody?”.
DJ pushes down the freeze response “this is DJ? Uh Dean Winchester Jr?”
Jody lets out a long breath. “Sorry about your dad kid”.
DJ had heard those words so many times they felt meaningless.
Then it hit him. She knew his dad? He’d neither met nor heard of this lady before. “You knew my dad?”
“Yeah, he was a good man” she paused for a moment (DJ waited for her to say more but she never did) “what did you call about kid?”
“Ahh” DJ once again remembered why he hated phone calls “I’ve been having visions”
“So your physics then?”
He hadn’t expected to be believed. “I guess? Its only happened twice”
He could almost hear her nodding though the phone “can you tell me what you’ve been seeing then?”
He told her. He's sure he sounded completely insane.
“I thought something was wrong!” Jody sounded like she’d just figured out the answer to a maths question.
“What do you mean?”
Jody continued “there's been all these demon signs, ones that would indicate a really powerful one but there's no demons left that could cause them. If there's something coming in from another universe that would explain it”.
“What do you mean Demons?” he had no idea what she was talking about “demons aren't real”
Jody laughed “I knew Sam didn’t want you to be a hunter but he really didn’t teach you anything”
Hunter?
Jody continued “look it's going to be really hard to explain over the phone. I’m retired but I’ll give you the phone number of someone else who can help you. Her names Claire, Claire Novak”
DJ nodded despite that being pointless “okay”.
He grabs the nearest pen and a scrap of paper.
He calls the number Jody gave him.
“Hello?” he says “is this Claire Novak?”
A voice much younger than he expected responded “who's asking?”
“My name is DJ, ah Dean Winchester Junior?” he pauses “Jody said to call you”.
“You have the right number” says the voice begrudgingly “but this isn’t Claire. She's currently… unavailable”
That sounded ominous. “Who is this then?”
“I’m Jamie, Claire’s daughter”, her voice was laced with defensiveness, “what can I help you with?”
DJ tells her about the visions.
“Right” Jamie says “i need you meet me in person”
“Where?”
She gives him an address.
“Its a bunker in Kansas” she explains (this explains nothing) “i’ll meet you there as soon as possible, if what your seeing is real we don’t have time to waste”.
She hangs up on him without a goodbye.
He pulls one of the duffle bags they used to use when they went camping out of the cupboard under the stairs.
He has no idea what you should pack to go monster hunting.
He ends up filling the bag with a random selection of clothes, all the cans of food in the cupboard and, at the last minute the gun his dad had never let him touch let alone teach him to use (dad had taught him gun safety but never how to fire it no matter how much he asked).
He calls his job to tell them he was taking leave.
After locking up and telling his neighbour he heads out to the garage.
Underneath its cover his uncle’s 1967 impala is as good a working order as the day it was made.
DJ settles into the front seat, puts the address into his phone and slides one of his own tapes in.
The door of the garage opens in front of him.
Chapter 2: chapter two
Chapter Text
DJ double checks the address he was given for the nine hundredth time.
He knew that Jamie had said that the bunker was hidden but he was having a hard time believing the empty field he was currently driving to contained anything.
That was until he turned around a bend in the road and spotted the concert doors set into the side of a hill.
Outside the doors a young woman around his age, boyishly short hair and oversized tee shirt tucked into baggy green cargo pants. Her boots are stomp-y combat boots and tossed over the top of it is a flannel shirt. There's a knife tucked into her waistband.
DJ slams the door of the car behind him as he gets out of the car. “Jamie Novak I assume”
The woman looks him up and down and immediately throws a bottle of water in his face.
He splutters through the water that went into his still open month.
“What the hell was that for?”
Jamie shrugged “can’t be too safe”.
“Safe from what?”
“Wow” she remarks “you really don’t know anything”
“First of all, rude”
“And in response to your question; that was holy water. Demons can’t stand it so it's a good way to check if someone's possessed”
There's that demon thing again.
“That's the second time in two days that someone has told me that demons are real. It would be amazing if someone could tell me what the hell is going on!” DJ is starting to get worked up, panic mixing into his voice.
“I've never had to explain this to someone before, this is going to be fun” Jamie mutters.
“ every monster you’ve ever had nightmares about, everything that goes bump in the night, it's all real. All of it. And it's the job of people like me to hunt them down”.
DJ has never been someone who believes in ghosts or any of that stuff but there was definitely something going on with his visions and all. He might as well give Jamie a chance.
“Why’d you ask to meet out here? We’re in the middle of nowhere” he asked instead of responding to her explanation.
Jamie points at the concrete doors set into the side of the hill. “This is the entrance of the men of letters bunker” she pauses for a moment “the men of letters being this secret organisation who studied the supernatural. This bunker is home to the biggest library of supernatural knowledge in the world and I need you access it”.
DJ moves until he is standing next to Jamie, staring up at the concert doors. “First of all why do you need me and second why do we need the bunker at all?”
“I need you because the bunker can only be opened by a legacy and you are the only one left in America and i-we need the bunker to kill the damned thing that you are having visions about”.
She handed him a key.
He turns the thing over in his hand. A legacy . Between this weird world of the supernatural and this whole men of letters thing DJ wondered just how much he was missing about his own family history.
While the thoughts were turning over and over in his mind, the key turned smoothly in the lock.
Half of him hadn’t been expecting that to work.
The doors open up to an iron staircase. The staircase leads to a library. As he stands there all of the lights turn on, one after the other.
He stands there frozen for a moment. The place looks massive, functionally endless. Jamie on the other hand doesn’t seem to be impressed at all. She walks right past him, dumping her bag on one of the library tables. (that reminded him, he needs to go get his bag out of the impala).
“Any clue for what we might be looking for?” he calls down the stairs.
“No idea!” she yells back “I'd go get your bag, we might be here for a while”.
DJ enjoyed reading. He didn’t enjoy reading this freaking much.
The table in front of him was piled high with old books and files. Most of them contained nothing useful. DJ wasn’t quite sure what they were looking for, only the vague ‘something that can kill powerful demons’, which was incredibly descriptive.
At least this was also serving as a crash course introduction to the supernatural.
The books ranged from weirdly fascinating to deeply boring to basically unreadable (usually because they were written in Latin or something). What felt like forever into their supernatural lore reading session, Jamie raises her head from the book its stuck in and asks him what colour the demon’s eyes were in his vision.
“Yellow, the demon had glowing yellow eyes”.
Jamie sighed “great, of course it does”
DJ still has no idea what's going on apparently “what? What does that mean?”
“It means the demon we’re dealing with is a prince of hell”.
“I’m going to assume that that is really bad”.
Jamie rolls her eyes at him “no shit sherlock”.
They go back to reading.
Eventually there comes a point when neither of them can stand to sit and read any longer. That's when Jamie decides that the fact that he doesn’t know how to fight is both a problem and a problem that they need to fix right now .
In definitely unrelated news, DJ almost sucks as much at fighting as he did at PE. The frustration on Jamie’s face is visible. Still he eventually gets to the point where is still completely rubbish but at least won’t get himself killed immediately.
Probably.
He's starting to wonder why he's currently doing this. He could have just left this to the people who actually know what they're doing. Deep down in his gut though he knows he never could have done that. Maybe its the desire to learn more about his father, maybe its reckless stupidity. Who knows! Either way hes not giving in any time soon.
At this point DJ was pretty sure they were going to have to read the whole damn library.
Thankfully that horrible idea turned out to (thankfully) not be required.
In one of the lore books (weapons of the supernatural vol. 32) they found a passage on Death’s scythe, a weapon supposedly capable of killing any being in the known universe. In another log they find out about the three different deaths that there's been and the unknown location of the third’s scythe.
They don't’ where it is but hey, at least they now know what they're looking for now.
They pretty quickly come to the conclusion that they aren’t going to find its location in the bunker.
DJ is attempting to help Jamie put together a list of supplies for their super fun supernatural death road trip.
Yellow eyes. Fancy ceiling. Old books. Hands reaching forward. Pages rustling. Book pages worn with age. Words on a page as clear as day. Spell. Way to open a portal. Alternative universes.
DJ jolts back into his body.
Jamie is staring at him with a look of confusion in her eyes. “What just happe-”
DJ cut her off. “I know what the demon’s up to. We need to stop it. Now”.
He can feel the panic rising in his throat. At some point he's stood up, Jamie pulls him back down. “Tell me what you saw?”
DJ takes a deep breath “the demon’s looking for the ingredients for a spell. He wants to open a hole in the fabric of reality, to let his demonic army in from another universe”.
Chapter Text
In the end they decide to take the Impala. The trunk is much bigger and DJ is much less willing to part with it then Jamie is with her car (which may or may not be stolen). DJ is just glad he didn’t unpack his bag.
Jamie moves the stuff from the back of her car into the Impala. DJ though the mix of guns, a handful of knives and a frankly weird amount of salt was plenty of weapons but Jamie insisted on going through the bunker’s archives and armoury ‘just in case’ and because ‘she only had the bare basics and if they were going to piss off a super powerful demon from another universe she wanted to be more prepared’.
At First DJ had attempted to help before very quickly being told to “piss off” because he had no idea what he was doing and was getting in the way. Instead DJ found himself wondering the seemingly endless corridors of the bunker and poking around in random rooms.
Seriously. Secret organisation or not the men of letters couldn’t have possibly needed this many bedrooms.
He randomly pushed open one of many bedroom doors. Most of the rooms were dusty, in a never been used way. This one was different. It was still dusty sure but this one looked like it had been used.
If it had been, the last person to use it fully cleared out when they left. DJ wandered around the room, opening drawers and generally snooping around.
Something that Jamie said when they first met (yesterday? How the hell had he only known her for a day? Felt like way longer), about how the bunker could only be opened by a legacy. He wondered if his dad had been here. He wondered if this had been his dad’s room.
It's in a small box inside a drawer of the desk that DJ finds a small bronze amulet on a leather strap. He turns it over in his hands before sliding it into his pocket. He doesn’t quite know who it belonged to, but something about it is telling him to take it with him.
The room on the opposite side of the hall is much more interesting.
It's been left completely untouched, exactly the same as it would have been when someone actually used it. The bed is unmade, a box of records sits on the desk. The bin is full of old glass bottles. There's a splattering of clothes thrown around the floor.
DJ searches though it the same as he did with the room opposite it. He doesn’t think much of the music selection, it's all old rock, the stuff his dad liked. It makes him nostalgic sure but it's not something he’d listen to on his own. The clothes on the floor are all flannel shirts and band tees so worn out you can’t read what's printed on them any more.
While he's leafing through the draws of the desk (full of old phones and loose cords) he finds a worn out journal. A quick flick though it reveals it to be full of monster lore. DJ shrugs and tucks it under his arm.
In the draw of the bedside table he finds a box. He turns it over and over in his hands. To be honest he's kind of scared to open it. Who knows what he might find.
Whatever he had been worried about, what he finds is not what he expects.
The box is full of photographs. Some are in better condition than others, most are worn, with creased corners and torn edges, like someone looked over them a thousand times.
Most of the photos feature a familiar face. His dad stares up at him. Alongside him is another man, one that DJ had never seen before. The necklace he's wearing in some of the photos is the one currently sitting in DJ’s pocket.
DJ can only assume that this is the uncle he never got to meet. His namesake, the original Dean Winchester.
He doesn’t know much about his namesake (Dad had never been very open about his past. Now he was wondering why that was) only that he was his dad’s older brother who died before DJ was born and that he was ‘the best man’ his dad ‘had ever known’.
He's about to go through the rest of the photos (there's a lot of people in them that he's never seen before, he hopes there's names on the back) when he hears Jamie yell his name.
“DJ get out here! It's time to get the show on the road!”
DJ smiles “coming!” he yells back.
He tucks the box under his arm as he runs out of the room, careful to turn the light off as he goes.
He joins Jamie outside where the Impala is parked (Jamie’s car is missing, he assumes she's moved it into the garage he found).
“So” he says “ where are we headed?”
“I've got two theories” Jamie is studying a map in her hands, comparing it to the scrap of paper he’d written down the spell he’d seen. “the first is that the reapers have it, the second is that Rowena, the queen of hell has it”
That didn’t answer his original question “that doesn’t tell me where we’re headed”.
“Since we can’t talk to either of them immediately, I’ll get Jody to contact Rowena, though we attempt to get to some of the spell ingredients before this Demon does.”
“Good plan” DJ slides into the front seat of the impala and drops the box of photographs into the back seat. As he's sitting down he remembers the necklace he has sitting in his pocket.
He slips it over his head and wraps his hand around the steering wheel. “you ready to hit the road?”
They drive for a while, with DJ driving and Jamie sitting shotgun giving directions and generally insulting his driving ability. (which is incredibly rude of her and he threatens to leave her by the side of the road more than once).
They do eventually need to stop though, for both gas and as he insists that no road trip, supernatural or not is complete without them, snacks.
DJ goes to get the snacks since clearly he cannot trust Jamie to do so.
He takes a stupidly long time to pick (why does this gas station have both a massive range and none of his favourites at the same time? How did they manage that?) so he and Jamie end up paying at the same time.
Continuing this theme of judgedyness, Jamie also insults his snack choices. He tells her to “go pick her own if she's so unhappy with them” and she adds the WORST flavour of chips to his choices.
Eventually though they do pay and start heading back to the car, bickering over the best flavour.
There's a woman in a black suit with a red waistcoat, tie hanging undone around her neck, leaning against the impala.
Her eyes are an inky black.

warnings; a little bit of barely described off screen torture
Jamie has her gun out before anyone can say a word. Her hands are steady. DJ is just frozen in place.
The demon waves at them. “Don’t worry, I come in peace”.
Jamie doesn’t lower her gun “what do you want then”.
The demon rolls her eyes “my name is Mephistopheles, and what I want to do is help you actually”.
DJ is just glad that the gas station is empty.
“And why would a demon want to help us?” Jamie is completely calm. DJ isn’t sure how she's managing it. He, for one, is terrified.
“Because” Mephistopheles doesn’t seem particularly bothered by the gun that Jamie has firmly pointed at her “ I have a rather cushy position under the current queen and I’d rather not have that disturbed”.
“Besides” she shrugs “I’ve ordered too”.
Jamie finally lets the gun drop (slightly). “Seems self-serving enough. Why are you here?”.
“Jeez, are you sure you're not the Winchester here? I've got some information I think you’d want and besides if you want to take down Beelzebub it's going to take more then two newbie hunters even with the scythe”.
DJ finally speaks up. “Beelzebub? Is that the demon’s name?”
Mephistopheles rolls her eyes again “duh”
Jamie finally lets the gun drop completely. She doesn't, however, take her hand off it “what's the scoop then?”
“Maybe I’d be more willing to share if you put that gun away”.
Jamie finally puts the damn gut away. “Fine”.
“That's the spirit” Mephistopheles smiles “First off all I know who has Death’s scythe, and no its not Rowena or the reapers”.
“Who has it then?” DJ asks, wondering how Mephistopheles knew any of this. He figured he probably didn’t want to know.
“Cuthbert Sinclair”
The look of confusion on both of their faces must have been plenty visible because before either of them could so much as ask who the hell that is, Mephistopheles sighed. “You don’t know who that is do you?”
“He's a collector of supernatural artefacts.” she explains “ he used to be the master of spells for the men of letters but he was kicked out. Now he's a collector of supernatural artefacts”.
She pokes DJ in the chest “i think your father and his brother killed him once, got better though”.
DJ raises his hand, cutting them off.
Blood. Blond hair. Knife blade. ‘Tell me where it is!’. Screaming. Golden eyes. Blood pooling on concrete. Knife wounds. ‘Never’. More singular worlds of dialogue. A woman's face. The list of spell ingredients. The bunker doors.
He snaps back to reality.
“What the hell was that?” Mephistopheles says but DJ can barely hear her.
“Jamie do you have a picture of your mum?” he asks, panicked.
The panic must work because Jamie immediately pulls out her phone, and starts digging through her photos. “Here-here you go”
DJ’s heart drops out of his chest. Fuck.
“That's the woman in my vision. Jamie, Beelzebub has your mum. And he's looking for the bunker”.
DJ explains his vision. Jamie looks torn. “We need to go rescue my mum!”
Mephistopheles stops her. “We can’t charging to our deaths! We need to get the scythe first, and since according to DJ’s vision Beelzebub can’t complete the spell since the last ingredient is in the bunker getting the scythe should be our first priority”.
Jamie reluctantly agrees. “What do you mean we?”
“I’m coming”
“Hell no” Jamie snaps “what proof do we have that you can be trusted?”
“You don’t have any” Mephistopheles smirks “but you don’t have any other leads do you?”
She opens the back seat of the car and slides in, tossing the box of photos into the front seat without a care. “Well,” she says, “are we going or not?”
DJ and Jamie have an intense silent argument before Jamie gets into the driver's seat, DJ sliding into the front seat next to her. He moves the shoebox of photos onto his lap.
It only takes about five minutes into the drive for Mephistopheles to ask the question that she had clearly been desperate to ask. “So what was that earlier?”
This question seems to be aimed at DJ “huh?”
“You know that whole Vision thing you had earlier, what the hell was that?”
DJ had no idea how to answer that. “Err I have no idea, I have visions of what Beelzebub sometimes but I have no idea why”
Mephistopheles pushes harder “are you sure?”
DJ shakes his head and holds on the box a little tighter “ I have no idea where they came from”
Mephistopheles let the conversation go and they continued along the highway to the sound of DJ’s music.

Chapter 5: chapter five
Chapter Text
Warning; minor character death
They continue towards the (apparently) invisible mansion of Cuthbert Sinclair. Mephistopheles providing directions from the backseat. Jamie puts up with this back seat direction providing but not with the insults to her driving ability coming from the same direction.
As Jamie is driving DJ takes this opportunity to go though the box of photos.
His father and uncle are in most of them but the rest of the subjects change constantly.
A grumpy old man in a trucker's hat. A mother and daughter pair. A nerdy looking redhead. An angry looking Blonde teenager. Two women in police uniforms. A very confused and vaguely stressed looking teenager. A man in a trench coat.
It's this person that Jamie points out “that's Castiel”.
(they are lucky there's no one else on the road).
“Who?” DJ asks. He thinks he can remember his dad mentioning a ‘Cas’ once or twice but he had never really shared anything of his past.
“He's an angel” Jamie says, eyes now firmly on the road “and he's possessing the Vessel of Claire’s dad, Jimmy”
She shrugged. “That's all I’ve got”
DJ kept shuffling through the photos “I guess we can assume he knew my dad too”
Jamie keeps driving.
Eventually they reach there destination.
Which was a random clump of woods so either Mephistopheles knew what she was doing or she was going to murder them. Both of these things seem likely.
Him and Jamie follow the demon out of the car.
DJ didn’t know much about magic collectors of the supernatural but he was pretty sure that they didn’t tend to hang out in clearings in the middle of the woods. (currently he was leaning towards ‘we are about to get murdered’).
His fears of getting murdered were only mildly calmed by Mephistopheles (he needed to think of a nickname for the demon) pulling stuff out of her bag. Jamie had filled him in enough to know that magic and witchcraft were things.
So if that's what she's doing then the real question turns out to be why.
Mephistopheles (hmmm how about he starts calling her Meph?) finishes setting whatever it is that she's doing. Its at that point that she starts ominously chanting.
DJ has figured out why they drove to this random spot in the middle of nowhere.
As Meph finishes her spell a truly massive mansion appears from the air. (DJ does wonder how it fits but then decides to just stop questioning that kind of thing).
The look on Jamie’s face told him that she was just and surprised as he was.
Meph does a little bow. “ welcome” she says “to the home of Cuthbert Sinclair”.
The door is predictably locked but since apparently Jamie can pick locks (and this guy hasn’t bothered with any more security then the house appearing out of nowhere thing) they make it inside pretty easily.
Meph tells them that Sinclair lives alone; if that's true then this guy has an unreasonable massive house. Hell if he lived with 20 people this would still be an unreasonably massive house.
The place seems to be an endless maze of rooms and passageways, each of them filled with a varied mix of supernatural objects (and the occasional body part, which was more than a little disturbing). DJ is suddenly doubting their ability to find the thing they're looking for among all the random objects.
The upside to the massive mansion is that they don’t run into Sinclair.
After wondering for what feels like an eternity without running into anyone, they do in fact find the scythe.
It's in what seems to be a living room, one that seems more used then any of the other rooms they’ve come across. Based on the perfectly polished glass cabinets and their neat brass labels, this seems to be the place where Sinclair kept the cream of his collection.
Death’s scythe seems like a pretty rare object so naturally they find it pride of place.
The next step is getting it out of the glass case.
This turns out to be way easier than expected.
Jamie just smashes the thing, picking up a chunk of overly detailed carved stone and chucking into the glass.
Meph rolls her eyes at Jamie “now you’ve done it. What is it with hunters and always going for brute force”
“How else would you want to get the scythe?” Jamie snaps.
“Oh, how about you don’t set off the magic alarm and get us all killed!”
Well. fuck.
Naturally this was the point at which Sinclair showed up.
In DJ’s defence, he has no idea what he's doing. When you take that into consideration, that he immediately froze seems like a reasonable reaction. In good news for his heart’s ability to keep beating, that is not the reaction Meph and Jamie had.
Jamie pulled out her gun. Meph it turned out, had a knife.
As you would expect from a magician who collects supernatural artefacts, Sinclair had magic.
Despite the fact that they out number Sinclair two and a half to one (DJ is not going to count himself as anywhere near as good as the others), the fight doesn’t go in their favour.
DJ tries he really does but it doesn’t seem to matter.
Sinclair flicks his hand out, pining Jamie against the wall like a butterfly with invisible force. Jamie starts panicking, hands scrambling at her throat as she seems to choke on nothing (great star wars force powers are a thing too).
DJ doesn’t know how he did it or why he did it but he pulls on something deep down inside him, something he didn’t know was there and pushes.
Sinclair goes flying. Jamie slips down from the wall, breath heavily. DJ is only vaguely aware of all of this. He stares down at his hands, brain blanking on what just happened. Jamie seems frozen too, staring at him with a look of shock.
The only one who doesn't seem surprised is Meph. She uses the momentary distraction of DJ’s apparent weird physic powers (he has so many questions) to drive her knife though Sinclair's back.
“Well” she said, like she hadn’t just killed someone “that was easier than expected”.
Chapter Text
warning; mentioned blood
DJ ends driving again after that. Sure if he has a vision the chances that he crashes the car are high as having images of demonic violence beamed into his brain is not conducive to driving. Jamie however is currently resting after the fight so DJ ended up behind the wheel again. He doesn’t know where exactly he's going, simply attempting to get as far away from Sinclair's house as possible.
Jamie is currently on the phone to Jody, asking about the research she promised to do on finding the location of beelzebub.
Meph is being her normal amount of helpful and once again attempting to make up for the fact that she isn’t in the driver's seat by giving him instructions. Death’s scythe is currently sitting across her lap in the back seat. Neither Jamie nor DJ had wanted to leave the extremely powerful weapon capable of killing God with her but they couldn’t put it in the front seat and it doesn’t fit in the boot so they don’t really have any options.
Jamie hangs up. “Jody’s managed to track down where Beelzebub is hiding out. I’ve got the address and it seems to be some abandoned warehouses because of course it is”
“You do realise there's a reason we always go for abandoned warehouses right?” Meph pipes up from the back “it's because they’re abandoned and no one cares if they hear weird noises”
“That doesn’t make it any less cliché”
DJ slams his foot down on the breaks as images fill his mind.
Light reflections. Clear crystal. Reaching human hands covered in blood. Museum display case. Sign with information. Display case of crystals. Broken glass.
He snaps back to reality to find Jamie and Meph staring at him, the car luckily still on the road as it seems he braked just in time.
“Seriously what the hell” Jamie says “you need to explain what the hell is going on! Between these visions and what you did back at Sinclair's, I need to know”
“I.DON’T.KNOW!” DJ snaps.
“You’re having visions of the future right?” Meph asks.
DJ shakes his head “it doesn’t feel like the future? It feels more like I’m seeing what's currently happening”
“Weird”
“Do you know what these are?” Jamie twists in seat.
Meph ignores her “your father is Sam Winchester right?”
DJ is now more confused than he previously was “yeah, why?”
“Just wanted to make sure I had the right brother”
“Will you stop being cryptic and just tell us what the hell is going on!” Jamie snaps.
DJ feels slightly out of it. He feels like he learnt more about his dad in the last couple of days than he has in a lifetime.
“Azazel, one of the princes of hell in our universe, ran this experiment thing? Trying to find a new king of hell or something. He did something to a bunch of babies, gave them physic powers. Your father was one of them. I don’t have much more information than that, I wasn’t really part of Azazel’s crew”
“What kind of powers?” DJ asks.
“A whole range of things” Meph shrugged “I Think your father had visions of the future? And could move stuff with his mind? By the time I came to the surface he didn’t seem to have them anymore”.
DJ is slightly less confused but he still has one more question. “If this demon gave my dad physic powers then why do I have them?”
Meph shrugged again “the rest of the special kids died and there's not like there's a president for this kind of thing. Maybe you inherited them but yours are slightly weaker or something”.
DJ had no idea what to do with this information.
“That's good to know,” Jamie says.
DJ wraps his hands around the steering wheel. “We can keep talking but we should also probably get moving again”.
They keep driving, this time with Jamie at the wheel.
While driving DJ asks Meph more questions, some of them about how his dad’s powers worked and how to use them. She doesn’t have any answers on that. So he asks about how demons use their powers, figuring that it might just give him a hint. He's still not quite sure what he's doing but he's got a much better idea than before.
When they pull up at the address Jody gave them, it's exactly as Jamie described. An extremely cliche abandoned warehouse/industrial complex that DJ feels like he's seen in a tv show before.
Since Jamie's is the best fighter of her and DJ, she ends up with the scythe. Meph is all taken care of already, revealing that her knife is capable of killing regular demons if not princes.
DJ is the least competent member of the team. Jamie argues that he should ‘stay behind since it's not safe’.
DJ argues back that “if everyone else is going then he should come too” and that “there's safety in numbers plus he has physic powers”
Eventually they agree that there is nothing Jamie can do to stop him coming so DJ arms himself with his dad’s old gun and what Jamie calls an ‘angel blade’ which apparently kills regular demons. He doesn’t have an amazing idea with what he's doing either.
All he can really hope for is that no one dies and that they find Claire in one piece.
Notes:
I don't know if I've mentioned this in the story before but Jamie is adopted. its important to me that you know this.

Chapter Text
Warning; fight scene, past torture, death of villain, death of unnamed minions
The building is, predictably, full of demons. DJ has a very low baseline (of one demon) for what is actually a lot of demons. Who knows maybe demons are really rare and this is a lot of demons. Maybe it's not actually a lot of demons, he has no idea. It's not enough at least that they are an actual threat and between the three of them it's easy enough to take out a few lone demons.
The corridors all look basically the same through. There's no way a warehouse like this normally has this many corridors (although it's not like DJ has spent all that much time in abandoned warehouses before this) and he suspected that Beelzebub had put them up on purpose to make finding him or his prisoners harder.
They keep walking, making sure to check inside every single door they come across. Some lead to empty storage rooms and some lead to more corridors. Claire is here somewhere though and the sooner they find her the better.
“I was expecting more demons,” Jamie commented.
(Well that answers his questions about whether or not this is a lot of demons)
“Most of his army is trapped in his universe” Meph responds “that's why he wants to open a path between universes so badly. All of the demons you see here are traitors from our universe”.
They keep walking through the seemingly endless identical corridors.
DJ pushes against another identical door. It doesn’t open. None of the others had been locked before this.
“Hey guys!” he calls “I found something!”
Meph and Jamie ran over to him from where they were dragging the remains of another demon out of the main corridor. “What is it?” Jamie asked.
“This door is locked”.
Jamie pulled something out of a pocket of her cargo pants “not for long.”
DJ and Meph just stand to the side as Jamie picks the lock open in seconds.
It's Claire.
Or at least he assumes it is because it's definitely the same woman from his visions and one glance at Jamie’s devastated face reveals that to be the truth.
She's unconscious, tied to a chair and bleeding sluggishly from a range of open wounds.
Jamie rushes forward, checking her pulse and cutting away ropes.
“She's still alive!”, the relief in Jamie’s voice is audible.
DJ has no idea what to do and stands there frozen in place as Jamie starts pulling bandages and first aid supplies out of her bag.
Meph steps forward “we don’t have time for that! We need to get her out of here or do you want to get caught with an injured, unconscious person by a bunch of armed demons!”
“If I don’t patch her up” Jamie hissed back “she’ll bleed out!”
“Fine” Meph snaps “just enough for her to not die and then we move!”
It doesn’t take Jamie long to finish.
“We need to split up” Jamie says, “we need to find Beelzebub soon or we’ll lose the element of surprise, and we can’t bring Mum with us so I’ll take her back to the impala and meet up later”.
She tries to stand up, but the weight of trying to carry a fully grown adult proves to be too much and she barely makes it to her feet.
“I’ll do it” Meph says.
“What”
“I’ll do it” Meph repeats “I’m a demon I have supernatural strength, I’ll be able to get her to the car much faster then you would”
Jamie seemed suspicious but something about either the emergency of the situation or the various battles they had fought together meant she agreed.
Meph was right about having supernatural strength at least, as Claire seemed to barely weigh anything to her as she headed out of the room. As they leave Jamie tucks an Angel blade into Claire’s hand.
It takes DJ a moment to fully unfreeze as they follow, now heading in the opposite direction. “How’d you know how to do that?”
Jamie seemed taken aback by the question “the lock picking or the first aid?”
“Both”
Jamie shrugged “I’m a hunter’s kid. If you're going to end up fighting monsters you better have the skills to survive it”
They keep walking.
They come to a door that is slightly larger and slightly fancier than all the other doors. DJ and Jamie share a look as she reaches forward to push them open, knuckles tightening on the scythe in her hands.
“This is it,” she mouths.
Doors fly open.
Inside Beelzebub is lounging on a throne, yelling at a demon, something about how they need to hurry up and find a way into the bunker. As the doors burst open, both of them freeze.
This only lasts seconds.
While Jamie defeats the minion demon quickly, Beelzebub was much harder to take down.
In fact, after that early victory, they barely stand a chance.
DJ decides that they were completely screwed when the scythe flies out of Jamie’s hand and skids across the floor, coming to a rest against the door frame.
Jamie lunges for it of course but doesn’t make it in time as Beelzebub pushes her up against the wall with his physic powers, leaving her choking on air.
DJ briefly wonders if anyone uses their powers for anything else.
DJ himself is trapped, pinned like a butterfly against the opposite wall of the throne room.
He feels a desperation welling up inside him and pushes. He doesn’t know how he does it, but he pushes back against Beelzebub’s physic hold and wins.
Jamie slides to her feet, gasping for air but lunging for the scythe. DJ just collapses to the floor, that sudden burst of adrenaline-fueled power leaving him completely drained. Beelzebub just seemed stunned.
Not stunned enough it seems as they grab Jamie’s ankle and start slowly dragging her away from the scythe.
The door flies open again as Meph charges into the room. She brings her food down on Beelzebub’s arm with all of her supernatural strength and the prince is forced to let go of Jamie's ankle.
Jamie’s hands wrap around the handle of the scythe, and she swings it with all of her might, leaving it impaled in Beelzebub’s chest.
They all stare at the body now lying on the ground for what feels like forever.
It's over.
Then out of nowhere, Jamie speaks up, “what do we do about the spell ingredients?”
Meph smiled “I'm sure Rowena will make great use of them” and snapped her fingers.
“Now” she continued “we should properly get out of here and possibly to a hospital.”
Jamie helps DJ to his feet. He's not sure he has the energy to stand let alone move alone right now.
They make their way back through the endless passageways.

Chapter Text
Warning; mentioned death
DJ is pretty sure that getting back to the car takes less time then it took to get the throne room the first time but isn’t that always the case?
Jamie throws the trunk of the Impala open and pulls the first aid kit out. “Let’s patch ourselves up quick then we need to get mum to Jody’s”
Meph shrugged “sure you can do that. I’ve got to go take the good news back to the queen”
She smiled “I’ll see you around”
Then she’s gone, as fast as she first appeared.
“Hu” Jamie says “I can’t believe I’m saying this but I’m going to miss that demon”
“Agreed”
“Why are we taking Claire to Jody’s and not a hospital?” Dj asked as he wrapped a bandage around a cut on his arm in the front seat as Jamie drove.
“Because hospitals ask questions and both of us have too much of a criminal record for that”
DJ is pretty sure that Jamie is speeding and she doesn’t seem to want to slow down. He doesn’t want to address the criminal record thing.
“Why Jody’s though?” He asks.
“Because one of my mum’s sisters, her names Annie by the way, is a nurse and she can look after mum without actually going to a hospital”
“Looks like I finally get to meet Jody face to face then” DJ laughed, as the thrill of their success and the fact that none of them died or even got seriously injured flowed through him.
DJ stays with Jamie and Jody until Claire wakes up.
He technically had a life to get back to, and there was no real reason for him to stick around any longer, he could leave locking back up the bunker to Jamie, but he still has questions about his dad.
At least it doesn’t take that long.
When Claire wakes up, DJ gets the story, as well as anyone can tell it, because it seems that anyone who knew his dad when he was younger is dead.
Here's what he knows.
His dad and his older brother Dean (who DJ is named after) were raised as monster hunters by their dad John after their mother died. Sometime before either Jody or Claire really knew them his dad died and Dean sold his soul to bring him back and went to hell as a result. Dean was pulled out of hell by an Angel named Cas (Castiel) whose vessel was Claire’s dad. This kicked off a chain of events that led to Lucifer getting let out of his cage and his dad let Lucifer possess him so that they could trap him again. Cas pulled his dad out of Lucifer's cage, without his soul and death eventually reunited the two halves but his Dad came out of it with some serious trauma and hallucinations of the Devil in his head. Things apparently spiralled from there, as these things called leviathan escaped from purgatory via Cas, a demon named abaddon showing up caused Dean to get the mark of Cain. Removing said mark let out God’s evil sister and while trying to stop her Lucifer got out the cage. Lucifer had a kid named Jack, an evil version of the archangel Michael tried to end the world as he had to his own universe and eventually they discovered that their whole lives were a story being told by God, who was pretending to be a human named Chuck, the world ended, Cas was killed trying to save Dean and got eaten by superhell, they turned God human and Jack replaced him and then Dean died by getting impaled on a piece of metal.
And that's not getting into the fact that everyone involved has died multiple times.
It's going to Take DJ a long time to process all of that.
In the meantime DJ has a life to get back to so he and Jamie have to go their separate ways.
DJ promises to tell her if he has any more visions.
On the way he locks back up the bunker, sealing it away forever, this time with the scythe inside it. Hopefully preventing anyone, intentions good or bad from getting their hands on a weapon that is powerful ever.
And then he goes back to his perfectfully normal, boring life.
And while he may have new knowledge of the darker side of the world, he also has new found knowledge of his family history. He understands why his dad never told him but apparently Winchester luck means that it was going to happen at some point.
Still it's good to be home, even if chances are that normality isn’t going to stick.
Sometime in the future.
As the world goes dark DJ finds himself standing on a bridge, a bridge that was definitely not where he died.
Oh. he's dead. That's fun.
There were two people staring at him. He recognizes one of them, the other’s face he only knows from photographs.
“Hey dad” he says “you probably should have given me a heads up about the monsters.”
