Excerpt from an exclusive interview with Eddie Munson via Pretty Metal
By Chrissy Cunningham (She/Her)
March 3, 2023.
I walk into a quaint local coffee shop, looking for an all too familiar head of wild curls. One, Eddie Munson, stands and greets me like an old friend, and I suppose we are, in a way, having interviewed him countless times over the last few years. He’s wearing a loose-fitting tee shirt with the collar, arms, and bottom cut away so it hangs off his frame. He pairs it with skinny black jeans, rips in the knees, and chains dangling off the belt loop. Dark curls frame his face where they fall out of the loose way he’s tied it up. He offers to buy me my order, but I decline. We sat facing each other as the sun beamed through the tall window.
Eddie smiles at me and rubs his hands together, a mischievous glint in his eyes as I prepare to ask him some questions.
How are you, Eddie?
Good. Great. You know, considering the influx of articles and speculation being written about me. He laughs.
What can you do, right?
Yeah.
So, I have a feeling you know what I’m going to ask about, or rather who?
He laughs again. Yeah, yeah, I know, you and the rest of the world are dying to know about my girl. Hit me, I guess.
You have a wife.
Eddie interrupts me before I can continue. That I do. I laugh, and he winks.
Can you enlighten us with the lucky lady’s name?
Stephine. Stephine Munson. Best lady I’ve had the pleasure of being in the presence of, no offence.
None taken. I imagine she’s wonderful if she caught your eye. I think I can speak for everyone and say none of us saw that coming. How did that happen? How did she become your wife?
It’s—a long story. And not all of mine to tell, really. But we had been friends, the closest of friends, for—three? Four years? We started dating, and it was amazing. Fit together like pieces of a puzzle. Anyway, one day, I just looked at her—and realized- Yeah, that person, I’m gonna marry that human- does that make sense? I nod. That’s the tl;dr, I suppose.
That’s more than enough. It’s wonderful that you guys have known each other for so long. I don’t know quite how to phrase this next question, so I apologise if it comes across wrong. You’ve always prided yourself in your identity and expressed it as a gay man. That being said, many of your fans feel like you were disingenuous, now knowing you are married to a woman. What do you say to that?
Well, first off, I think you worded that excellently Chris. Second. Eddie takes a breath here. That’s a completely understandable reaction to have to that news; I didn’t expect any different. There are a few reasons I’ve never talked about my partner in the public eye before, and this is one of them. Some people will get it, and others won’t. Sexuality isn’t a definitive thing; there are exceptions to it; Steph is mine. I’ve never loved a woman before, never found any interest in them. But the thing with Steph is that I love her, in whatever form she possesses, I love her soul, nothing's gonna change that. Oh, big deal, I say, and I will continue to say, I am a gay man. Words are just that, words. They don’t need to have an inflexible, rigid structure. If you can’t understand that, okay, cool, but questioning my queerness? That’s a bit much. I am very queer. If you don’t like me being gay, fine, call me queer, but do not erase my experience.
Wisely put. You make a good point that words are words.
Yeah, well, it’s true. Ironic that a community who constantly says that sexuality, and gender, are fluid, always changing, yet are so privy on words and unyielding definitions. God forbid someone identifies as something but doesn’t adhere to that exact definition to a T.
God forbid, right? Switching to a less heavy topic, are we going to see any new songs dedicated to her?
Eddie laughs before answering. I mean, of course, how could I not? Though I could argue most of my work already released is dedicated to her. He gives me a boyish smirk.
So, there have been things in the past we might have overlooked that might’ve hinted at her? Care to share with the class?
He chuckles and shakes his head at me. Chris, you should know better. I would… but where’s the fun in that? Besides, it’ll keep the mystery if I don’t tell ya. I’ll let people draw their own conclusions… like I always have. A soft smile graces his face.
Very true. Well, I best leave you to it then. Thank you for your time. It was a pleasure, as always, Eddie.
Pleasure is all mine, Ms. Cunningham.
As I stood to leave, he stood as well. Giving me a slight hug and a quiet thank you, I turn and leave Eddie Munson to his afternoon.

A series of photos.
The first is of Steph smiling at the camera, clearly having taken it herself; Eddie is partially cut-off as he kisses her cheek.
The second is another selfie; the sun beats down on her this time as she smiles brightly at the camera. Eddie can be seen over her shoulder, arms in the air, and it looks like he’s yelling. He’s in a white tank with a rainbow bandana tied around his neck, hair up behind his head, and wearing sunglasses. Steph has her hair down, freckles on display behind big pink, heart-shaped glasses and a few colors of stripes paint her cheek; blue, pink, and white.
The next is of them both on a couch, Steph nearly falling off Eddie’s lap as he holds her waist and kisses her neck. She looks like she’s giggling with her head thrown back. Her hands hold Eddie’s on her tummy.
The last is of two silhouettes sitting in front of a large window leaning on each other. The sky’s color, just having faded from a sunset, is a pink-hued purple and indigo, and the stars glitter around the top. The apartment around it is dark, basking in shadow. It feels content.
@mspinkbats love you

Transcript of Season 7 Episode 21 of Newby at Night
Original Airdate: June 16, 2023.
…
[Commercial Break]
Bob Newby: Welcome back, everyone. To introduce our next guest, who really needs no introduction. He’s been touring all across the world for his third studio album, recently has been nominated for a Grammy, and has just released a new single. Please give it up for Eddie Munson!
[Audience roars with applause as Munson makes his way onto the stage. Newby meets him at the stairs, briefly shaking hands before the host lends his arm to help Munson up the steps. Newby takes his seat. Munson gives a small wave to the crowd and sits as well.]
Newby: Welcome to the show.
Eddie Munson: Thanks for having me.
Newby: So, how’s the world tour been?
Munson: It's been. Uh, it could always be better. Stressful, but it’s also been amazing. Everyone is just–just so in the zone and so happy. It's a very fun and wonderful experience, and I'm incredibly grateful that I'm able to do it.
BN: That’s fantastic! I’m sure that translates to your shows.
EM: Hm.
BN: And while on tour, you somehow manage to drop a single. What’s up with that? It feels different than anything we’ve heard from you.
EM: Yeah, I’ve just been playing with sounds and noises. I found one that suited the lyrics—so I decided to clean it up and put it out. The lyrics—they’ve been- around for a while, let’s say.
[Newby laughs]
BN: How long are we talking? A year or two? Just popping in on a notebook till it stuck?
[Munson laughs]
EM: No- no, it’s—it’s been around for years. It’s… It’s personal, I guess. No time really felt right to try and make it into something more. It was just something I sang when I felt—lost. Would just use my acoustic and sing it like some sort of self-soothe melody. It’s kinda pathetic when I say it out loud.
BN: No, it’s not. That’s wonderful. You’ve spoken about how much music has helped you in the past. How is this any different than that?
EM: God—You sound like Steph. Ironically it was also her who pushed me to release it.
BN: Ah, well, wives know us better than most, I suppose. Does she like the song as much as you?
EM: Yeah, actually. It isn’t something I only sing to myself, I sing it a lot to her too. Just humming it while we make coffee, and sitting on the couch, when one of us can’t sleep. It means a lot to both of us.
BN: That’s really sweet, really I mean that. Speaking of Steph, how is she doing?
[Munson gives a slight chuckle]
EM: Steph? She’s never better. God, yeah, she’s been ecstatic.
[Munson’s smile is beaming—the audience laughs a bit]
EM: I mean—listen- I love my wife. She’s fucking amazing—pardon my language. Yeah, I don’t know what to tell you.
[Newby and the audience laugh again]
BN: She seems amazing. I know initially, when you guys came out as a couple—the news outlets didn’t take it too well. Now they seem to be more on your guys’ side since she came out.
EM: Damn right. It’s mindboggling to me still how arrogant people are. Like—why we went on the carpet together in the first place was because of convenience, frankly. No- I’m serious, Birdie is a super close friend of the both of us and when we realized that we were going to the same premiere, we were like, “Why not just go together? It feels stupid if we don’t do that.” I mean, Steph looked at me and said, “Are you sure?” I'm like—“Yeah? I wouldn’t have asked otherwise.”
Whole time it was great. I mean, people thought I was drunk or high or something, but really I was just amused—because everyone was confused—I had this beautiful woman beside me, and they had no idea who she was.
Steph didn’t want to do any interviews or anything, so she kind of stood in the background. But this one, one of the last ones that I did on the carpet, they are asking, “Who are you here with?” and I said, “My wife.” And the interviewer didn't believe me. So, I said again, “My wife–this is my wife. I'm here with my wife,” and the interviewer just looks at me and goes, “No, but who are you here actually with?” I just said again, “I'm here with my wife”—didn't believe me.
Eventually, they turned their mic to ask Steph. “Who are you?”—“I'm his wife.”
Yeah—that clip kind of went viral, at least a little bit, rightfully. It's fucking hilarious.
[Newby laughs]
BN: Oh man, that’s rough.
EM: You’re tellin’ me. Then the media shitstorm that followed that. Steph was convinced at one point that if she came out, then it’d just stop. Told her it wouldn’t, at all. Eventually, I texted Chrissy, Chrissy Cunningham, if she was in town and wanted an exclusive. That killed some of the flames, thankfully.
BN: Would it have helped, even just a bit? If Steph had come out sooner? Not that she had to come out at all, of course.
EM: Right, of course. I told her that on countless occasions. But no, it wouldn’t have then, like it still hasn’t shut people up now. Lemme explain. I clarified in that article with Chris about my identity, about how words are just words and such—regardless of that interview, some people will and do think I still view Steph as a man. I do not. I stopped the day she told me she wasn’t.
And, God, not to get into that story because it isn’t mine to share, even if I have permission to, but part of the reason she was so scared to tell me? Was because of the whole gay thing. She was scared I was gonna leave or somehow stop loving her. Even thinking about that possibility breaks my heart in two, because I would never stop loving her. It’s never mattered—in the way of my love. I would love her no matter how she was, who she was, because I love her, her soul.
I asked her that night before bed—she had voiced this fear after she told me—what she wanted me to use. She asked me, “Do you see me as a man?”—“No.”—“Then I don’t care. That’s all I need to know.” Smiled at me, and we went to sleep. I used queer for a while right after, just to make sure she was comfortable. But it was just a word. Just because I used one or another doesn’t mean there can’t be exceptions. She’s the exception for me. I love her. Wife or not.
BN: … Wow. Thank you for sharing that, Eddie. And please thank Steph too. I think I can say that many of us feel, just, honoured to hear your story of love. The way it’s surpassed and has evolved. It’s beautiful.
EM: That’s all her. I love my wife; did I ever mention that? No, but seriously, I do. So, so much. I’m so proud of her. She’s come so far, transition or otherwise. I couldn’t be happier than I am right now.
BN: We’re proud of her too. Thank you so, so much for stopping by and coming on the show tonight. It’s been amazing. Truly.
EM: Pleasure’s all mine. Thank you, Bob. It means a lot.
[Munson stands up and shakes Newby’s hand again, and turns to wave at the audience.]
BN: Of course. Eddie’s new single “Undying & Tainted” is out now—go give it a listen.
—
“Did I do good?” Eddie gestures wide as he makes his way backstage. His beautiful wife walks towards him and laughs.
“Hm… I think it’ll do.” She leans into his space, cheeky and grinning. Their noses brush as Eddie puts his hands on her waist.
“Yeah?” He says. She hums and steps back a bit away from Eddie’s attempt to kiss her. Her hands stay resting on his chest.
“You love me?” He laughs at that, bringing her closer again.
“Yeah. I love you. I love my girl. My Stevie.”
He meets her in the middle for a kiss. Unhurried, sweet, sticky with lipgloss, but full of adoration and love.

Eddie would love her, man or woman, in any and all universes.
