Chapter Text
Being grabbed as he bolted through the gates at the end of the day Izuku heard several of the students (Not other students, he refused to even think like that, despite how he spent every day at school learning, he wasn't a student, he just wasn't) calling out, “OOOOOOooooooo Kaibyo’s in trouuuuuuuble!” and “Go easy on ‘im Sensei, he’s the only cat I know that gets detentions!” and even worse, “Kaibyo, what did you DO?”
Flattening his ears he growled cause, yeah, he had spent three days in detention last week and it was soooooo embarrassing! He hadn’t meant to run out into a third-year exercise and almost get blown up and, he winced at the remembered scolding he’d gotten from first Midnight and Ectoplasm who’d been running the class - he’d resolved right then and there to NEVER EVER frighten any of the teachers again - but then, holy cow, Aizawa-sensei AND Mic-sensei had been “Not angry at you kitten but…..” and “Just a bit disappointed in your choices, ya dig?” and yeah, people were still laughing at him for getting detention.
“Easy there kiddo, a little less of the claws? You’re not in trouble yet," (‘YET?’) "I just need to send a note to your…. owners.” Izuku could clearly hear the distaste in his voice when he used the word and if he could have he’d have confessed right then and there cause he was on his back and a warm hand was rubbing his tummy and Yamada-sensei was fastening a note to his collar and he was surrounded by wonderfulness cause they always smelled so good…..
The first time he’d realized he could smell emotions almost blew his mind, he’d never been allowed a pet but he’d always heard animals could smell fear but now he knew they could smell everything else as well!
…..and now they smelled of care and concern and hope and cunning and why did they smell like that?
Looking at them with suspicion he got a laugh and his ears ruffled a final time and he was let go, being told “Go home kiddo and try to stay in tonight cause you’re giving me gray hairs!”
******
Izuku took the time to read the note while hiding in his cupboard, letting the busy sounds of the all-night printing company soothe his nerves and was worried and touched and happy and sad and all mixed up because “They want to buy me?” He whispered as he read it, and “Oh shit, if my owners don’t keep me in they're going to either report them for negligence or take me by force so it’d be better to take the offer and oh my fucking gods how many zeroes is that? I’m not worth that kind of money, no cat is but,” he shook his head, “no, I can't, I can't let them spend…”
Putting the collar down he smoothed the letter again, marveling that anyone would want him but maybe it was because he was a cat? Everyone at UA liked him but they didn't really know who he was, they just thought he was Kaibyo and cool and smart and funny and well, he loved them all so much.
He’d never known that UA staff was more family than anything else, and he’d almost fallen off the desk when Nezu had scolded Aizawa-sensei and made him stand in the corner, like, in the actual corner and not let him out until he’d said sorry for not treating himself right and then promised to eat an actual meal, sitting down and everything, and he’d been bright red and looked and smelled REALLY embarrassed but he’d actually eaten real food and Izuku had been so relieved because Aizawa’d been smelling weak and hungry for days and days and worrying him so much!
Or when Kayama-sensei was so angry and upset one day at how some of the older students had been acting and Ryou had wrapped her in blankets and Snipe had made everyone hot chocolate and then they all talked about not just what had happened but also when and how to add a class on discrimination and its impact on the industry so it never happened again, at least not with their students anyway.
And Hizashi the time a great song had come on and he’d scooped Nezu up and they'd danced laughing around the room, dragging everyone else up and the whole room was on their feet before the song was over and even he’d been picked up and danced around and it felt like what he always thought family should feel like.
Settling down he closed his eyes and remembered all the times he’d watched the staff act like the kids they taught, the time Hawks had hung upside down from a tree and Loud Cloud-sensei had thrown water balloons at him and managed to miss with every single one and then had rained on him instead…
And when 13 had come in smelling hurt and upset and had gotten hugs and understanding and no one told them to just grow up.
The very memorable night when instead of all heading home after a late meeting all the staff had instead played hide and go sneak in the dark for hours and then slept in the big room at the top of the main building, the one with all the couches and the AMAZING view.
Yeah, he smiled at the memory of finding that room and how many times he’d now joined one or the other of the teachers for a nap between classes.
Izuku wondered if being owned by UA might be a good thing?
‘I mean, if I send a note back and say they can have me, that the worry of my being out is upsetting them or maybe that my owners have to move? Yeah, they have to move and can't take me with them.’
‘So, what changes if I get owned by UA?’
Letting his mind roam across good food and snuggles and being able to watch the classes all the time instead of just when he got through the gates and pets and listening to Yamada’s wonderful voice and more snuggles and sleeping with Aizawa-sensei in his sleeping bag and pets, so many pets and cuddles and hugs and belly rubs and….
Being kept in at night.
The two things warred for a moment in his head, all of the good stuff and being locked up at night or continue to roam the streets at night and having to run away from UA cause they were NOT gonna let this go now, he'd known it when he almost got hurt stopping that man from attacking Eraserhead from behind the night before so….
UA or being a vigilante.
He wasn't expecting it when he burst into tears but he didn't want to be alone anymore, he wanted to be owned and never ever have to go out at night cause it was so scary and he didn't WANT to die even if he did it helping people cause he’d learned already watching hero classes that living was the main thing, a dead hero saved no one and "Prioritize the rescue!" meant saving himself FIRST and then everyone else and even if he never ever told them who he really was he could just be their cat and it’d be enough for him, he’d be safe and they’d love him cause they already told him they did, each and every one of them had when they petted him or talked to him or scooped him up and set him safe above the stampeding students and….
Lifting his notepad up he sniffled and rubbed his sleeve across his nose and nodded as he wrote a reply to the really kind of threatening and rude letter he’d just read, the one that made him feel all warm inside.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear UA staff
I am so glad you reached out because we are moving and Kaibyo can’t come with us. We were going to take him to the no-kill shelter near us but we think this is better.
Thank you and please be kind to him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Reading it again and again, he thought it was okay? Short but it said everything that was needed so he rolled it up tight and tied it to his collar and changed, shoving his head through the circle and crawled back out through the gap in the wall, never even seeing the fly-sized drone perched on a branch watching him.
**************
Everyone had been in the observation room the instant they’d heard that Kaibyo was going to be tracked back to his home and the ultimatum given, either keep him in at night or give him to UA, and couldn't wait to see where he lived.
A hole in the wall of the print shop nearby was NOT what they were expecting!
And when the drone flew in after the again cat ran off - every arm had ached to scoop the crying child into their grasp, every heart hurt at the lonely sound of a child crying with no hope of comfort - into the late morning sunshine they were even more unprepared for finding a tiny space filled with discarded clothing, the notes that had been sent already, and a jumble of miscellaneous stuff, the kind of things that a kid would keep, big bolts, pretty stones, stacked up paper - and that answered the question of what and why the kitten was a paper thief, they were using it for actual writing on instead of any of the other guesses people had been making whenever he darted off with another stolen page - and art pencils cluttering up the corners and drawings covering the walls of the tiny space.
Drawings of them.
Moments captured in graphite and ink and coloured lines, Shouta and Hizashi leaning on each other, Midnight laughing, Oboro with Nezu on his shoulder as they stand, watching the sunrise, Snipe holding a rifle, head held high as he gave a lecture on gun safety, Ryou asleep on the couch, mouth open in a snore, all of them, even some of the students.
They were beautiful.
And clearly not drawn by a cat!
“Well,” Hizashi said a bit blankly, “you do call him Kid Shouta but Nezu, what do we do now?”
Every eye turned to their Patriarch as he said, “Hmmmmmm, well, I guess it depends upon who wants him?”
The speed two hands raised could have broken the speed of sound and had the rest of the room laughing out loud, even if the idea of a kid as young as the one that had been living alone for who knows how long was seriously not funny.
**********************
Slipping inside the gate - that opened for him which was, ‘Weird, gates never done that before!’ - he pranced along the main path, tail proudly high, dodging any and all student hands that wanted to pet him as he made his way to the staff room where he knew that a few of the teachers at least would be so he could get rid of his note and see what happened next.
Mumbling happily to himself, “If I’m right then maybe they’ll put a collar or harness with a tracker on it so I can’t get through the gates anymore or into the more dangerous training grounds so that’ll be a pest but on the other hand, maybe they’ll have a food feeder thing like the pet store sells, one that puts out fresh food every time I go near it? That’ud be great!”
Pondering as he started up the stairs, “Will they want me to sleep in one of the teacher apartments or in the school building itself, maybe the nap room, or what? Oooooo I don’t wanna be in a crate or something at night but, naaaaagh, Aizawa-sensei'd never cage a cat up even to keep them safe so I’m guessing they might want me with a teacher at night?”
Prancing down the hall he fetched up at the door and gave a stretch before raising himself onto his hind feet and scratching at the door, raking his claws down the anti-scratch pad Maijima had installed so he could get their attention without damaging the actual door.
Shivering at the screech his claws made he chirruped a hello when the door opened and darted inside, leaping onto the counter where, as usual, he was scooped up with the admonishment of, “No feets on the counters yo!”
Curling his paws in tight he started purring as the note was taken off and read, only noticing faintly that everyone smelled odd, ‘Huh, smells like everyone got a shock a bit ago, wonder what that's about?’ but with so much on his mind he didn't pay much attention to smells of past alarm and instead focused on how everyone was reacting to the note.
Relief was the overwhelming scent that hit his nose as, person by person, it was passed through the room, finally ending with Aizawa-sensei saying, "Thank GODS!!! Kiddo, I thought we were going to have to steal you to stop you giving me heart attacks at night!”
Yamada-sensei yelled, "WHOOOHOOOOO Kaibyo’s commin’ home with US tonight!!!” and when other teachers started to protest his being claimed so fast Nezu laughed and said, “You snooze you lose, Hizashi and Shouta got the jump on you all on this. Now, unless anyone wants to fight them for him, I suggest you all simply enjoy his presence during school hours and be grateful that he is safe inside their apartment at night.”
Despite laughing protests and a few tries to get him out of Hizashi's arms, everyone smelled happy enough with the way things were working out and Izuku was thrilled, he already knew they were together but to get to live with them? With his two favorite teachers? Well, it was better than he’d ever hoped for.
He’d been right about the harness, Hizashi carried him down to the support department not much later and Maijima fitted him with a snazzy yellow harness and talked the entire time he worked on it, all about how it would prevent all the doors in the perimeter wall from opening if he got too close so he should stay away from the main gates when school was starting and letting out to prevent chaos and that if he got snagged or caught somewhere it had break-away fastenings so he was to thrash around and he’d be loose in an instant and it had a built-in tracker and he could still get in anywhere except - and he listed off all the more dangerous place in UA, even his very own department because the students were crazy and he wasn't sure if yellow really went with his fur so maybe they'd try red next or perhaps black and "Here you go Hizashi, he’s all kitted out and ready to rumble!”
Yawning, Izuku thought, 'Gosh, Maijima talks as much as I used to do!’ Turning around he head-butted the support hero's chin and got gentle fingers rubbing behind his ears and a soft, “Your welcome Sprocket!”
Being scooped up he didn't even bother to struggle knowing that Yamada-sensei would not only never let him fall but also wouldn't let him go either, he let himself go limp and listened with curiosity as his new life was spelled out for him, not even wondering why they were all talking to him so much because they'd always talked to him and maybe it was more now but then again, he was theirs now so maybe that was just part of owning a cat, you talk to it like a person?
He didn't know but he did love Hizashi's voice so he tried to focus past his tiredness, “Sho and I have a three-bedroom apartment in teacher-block one and we already got the balcony catproofed so you can't fall off, not that we think you would but better safe than sorry, ya dig?"
'Yeah,' Izuku yawned again, 'I dig.'
"Awwwww sweetheart, you seem extra tired today, bet a nap sounds good and I know Shoubug usually has one right around now so how bout we go find him eh? The two of you can catch some zzzzs before lessons this afternoon, I think he’d doin' capture the flag today."
Izuku chirruped sleepily at that, he LOVED capture the flag in heroics, the students were awesome at it!
The gentle rocking as he was carried finally put him right to sleep, Mic now humming instead of talking, knowing the kid was too tired to take it in, he’d tell him more once he had a nap. Knowing that he was actually a whole-ass child instead of a cat, quirked or not, all of them now knew his sleep schedule was absolutely and totally messed up! The kid was active all day long with a few naps scattered about and was also up and about most of the night as well - and don't get him started on the danger the kid had been in for so long - so his being so tired now, especially after clearly deciding that being a pet was the better option than being alone anymore….
Well, despite how his heart wanted to break at the thought of how lonely this kid had to have been to choose being a pet over being human, and what trauma was in their past to make that a logical choice for any child, Hizashi was happy enough to settle the kid down with Shouta, snap a few dozen pictures of them both sleeping, and head off to his next class, content that for the moment at least the kid was safe.
He’d stop in later with Nezu and see if he had anything new on their new kid's history.
*******
Nezu had absolutely NOTHING on his new kitten, and it wasn't for lack of trying!
All he had was a few glimpses of the youngster in cat form dating all the way back to autumn (and it was now early summer so his new grand-kitten had been alone for at least TEN MONTHS) and the location of his first appearance but even using that information there was nothing to link it to, no disasters or mysterious activities or missing child reports or anything at all.
One moment there was no spotted green cat and the next there was and then, a little over six weeks later, UA had its very own spotty menace driving his poor Shouta crazy with worry.
And now to find that Kaibyo was actually a child - best guess somewhere between 9 and 14 - and while it was lovely to have his first grand-kitten safe at last, it was not so lovely not knowing anything at all about them.
HighSpecks was a bitch of a quirk in a situation like this, snarling and snapping at the few facts he had and giving him a headache trying to MAKE facts where none existed.
Getting up to brew himself a fresh pot of ginger tea, he sighed. How best to get the information he needed and yet not stress the child? Trust was already an issue, or rather lack thereof, so for now everyone had agreed to let the deception continue.
Eventually either the child would trust them enough to tell them who and what he was or something would come up and they would have to tell the poor little thing they already knew and go from there.
Either way, for now at least the child was safe at last so he sternly told his quirk to calm down and got back to work, soothing cuppa in hand. A school like UA didn't run itself.
***********
In the end, it wasn't trust but heroics that led to Izuku outing himself as a human, heroics, and a student afraid of the dark.
He’d been watching the newest class of first years - settling into his new life as UA’s, and especially Yamada and Aizawa-sensei’s cat had been fantastic, he actually had his very own room in their apartment, a bit plain but painted in soft greens, a dark green and poofy comforter on the bed, wooden desk, and shelves and dresser and it was strange but not bad to have it.
“This is your room." He’d been told, "Everyone deserves a place of their own and we already know you’re smart so if we have to come in here we’ll knock. If you don't chirp to let us know we can come in, we won't."
It really had been that simple and Shouta had been right, it was nice to have a place all his own and they had never yet broken what they said, always knocking for permission and the one time Izuku had felt too sad to chirp for them, they'd stayed out.
Most of the days he was good with it all but sometimes the guilt of lying to them made it hard to even look at them.
But everything else was so good that he tried to not think about it.
Of course, some of the things in his new life were really really weird but maybe it was just because pro heroes are weird too?
Like how he ate at the table, sitting on a specially designed stool but STILL wasn't allowed to be on the counters.
Or that he could be on couches and desks and windowsills but nowhere near the support department, not even where he used to watch the testing grounds OUTSIDE where he should have been safe.
Well, when the prototype capture device went haywire and tried to kill him, he kinda got the restriction but it was still annoying, he’d LIKED watching things blow up!
Everyone still gave him real person food although the students were still given little packets of treats from none other than Recovery Girl herself - just in case they tried to give him something he shouldn't eat - but now they tasted even better, as did the food in the on-demand feeder that he visited several times a day in the upstairs lounge because it had its own low table up there and in the teacher's room they all just shared whatever they were eating with him.
Remembering the thorough exam he’d had on his second full official day as UAs cat and how it came with a lecture on what he could and couldn't eat, he had been pleased to discover that baring only chocolate and caffeinated beverages, he was good to go with most food, although his taste hit more on meat than on rice.
He was sitting inside training ground Sigma - underground rescue operations simulation area - and pondering his new life when a massive explosion rocked the surface he was on, sliding him skidding and yowling down into the dust-choked rubble into blackness.
*-*
He was only unconscious briefly, like a flicker off then on again but in that time he'd gone from sitting high up in the vents watching the kids work their way through the half-collapsed “Office building” to being half covered in broken bits of rubble in total darkness.
‘Wow, my head really hurts!’ was his first thought, followed by “Where’s Tanaka-san? She was right under me, I must have almost fallen on her!’
Trying to use his nose only had him coughing and sneezing from the choking dust so he curled his tail across his face and tried to breathe through the fur but it didn't help much. ‘Never mind....’ He spread his whiskers wide, focusing on the feelings he was getting through them. ‘Cats can navigate in total darkness using their whiskers!’ he remembered, gently whisking his whiskers across and around what turned out to be a tiny cramped space.
It took him a bit of time to find a way out of it - knowing that he had people already looking for him kept him from totally panicking - and when he did find a way through it was into a nightmare of twisted jagged chunks of rubble that his eyes still had no light to see.
His ears did work though so he clearly heard shifting rubble, distant alarms, and the sound of crying….
…crying?
Following it he managed to creep through the choking darkness and eventually was close enough to almost touch the one he’d been looking for. And despite the choking dust, this close he could smell she was mostly alright but very VERY frightened!
He chirruped to catch her attention but she only cried harder, her breathing speeding up even more and now she was gasping and he was even more worried about her but he just couldn't reach her. Forcing his front paws through the gap he was still too short and she just wasn't hearing him as he meowed and chittered at her so in desperation he did the only thing he could think of, he changed and reached again…
This time he did touch her, managing to slide his hand between invisible chunks of rubble to brush her shoulder, causing her to scream but it broke her from her panic long enough for him to say, "It's okay, it's okay" - feeling the snapped loose harness tangling around his middle he said again, "It's okay, heroes are coming, the teachers are coming, they'll get to us soon we just gotta hang on!"
A tiny voice in the dark and he couldn't not answer when she asked - "W-who are yy-yo-you?” so he said "My name is Midoriya, I’m kinda part of the school," pushing slightly against her shoulder he was relieved when her hand came up to his and gripped it tightly, "I was watching the exercise, you were doing so good, you were soooo gonna win and the prize was super cool too! A passing grade on your choice of assignments? I mean, WOW! Did you know what you were gonna use it on?”
Terror was practically rolling off of her but she managed to say through her chattering teeth, "Y-ye-yeah, ummmm, m-my English t-t-test, I failed it and Yam-Yama-sensei said h-h-he’d help me with it bu-but I HATE English!" and her voice was getting stronger, sobs fading into passion as she reiterated her hatred of the difficult language - "So I don't want help, I just want a passing grade, y’know?”
Izuku laughed and said, "Yeah, I know! But if you use it on that then you won't have it if you fail something really important, like final exams! And I saw the prize, it didn't have any limitations on it cause it was one of the new teacher's assistants who wrote it, the others all know better than that!"
"I mean, think about it, you fail the finals and still pass because a TA gave you a get outta jail free card!” his giggle in the utter darkness did more to calm her than his words did but, she paused because he was right!
"But what if I just fail the test again?"
"Nooooo I KNOW you won't! Yamada-sensei is the BEST so I know if he helps you after school then you’ll pass for sure! And because you were so far in the lead you’ll win by default, I’m sure of it, so all you gotta do is, when the teachers come, hold your head up high and say, "I WON!”
"That way you get rescued AND win, all at the same time!"
It wasn't very much longer before they heard the sound of cement sliding as it reformed around them and she gave a muffled scream and tried to hold his hand but as they were gently lifted into the light he tugged it free.
With how his head hurt, and how hard it was to breathe in the stirred up again dust, Izuku had a wild moment’s thought that he’d just stay human and see what happened but, well, what if his mother had been right, what if they took one look at the real him and....
Well....
Imagining them turning away from him in disgust the way she'd done had tears tracking through the dust on his face, a sob ripping free as he remembered how much it had hurt all the other times beloved people had turned away from him and then he froze in horror, he’d told her his name.
His name.
Midoriya.
No given name but his family name and that he was part of UA but only kinda and he’d only meant to help her, to keep her calm and safe because she was so frightened - he had been too but he could ignore it and focus on her instead - but now, when it was almost all over, NOW he was frightened.
And confused.
Head throbbing as the light levels began to get stronger, Cementos was going so slowly, so carefully to get them to safety, he reached for his quirk in panic, he couldn't let them see him like this, they'd hate him forever but instead of warm fur and pretty green paws he just kept staring at his hands.
His quirk wasn't working.
Why wasn't it working?
Trying to stand, to crawl away, to do anything other than sit in a confused huddle he gave a whimper as he again failed, with a spike of agony to his head, to change.
The sun then blinded him as they were both suddenly above ground and there were Shouta and Hizashi and they were coming to him as Nemuri gathered the crying girl into her arms and he tried scooting back, to evade the hands and he was gasping shuddering breaths in time of the pounding in his head as words finally penetrated the panicked haze....
"….ibyo hey Kitty Kitty heeeey Kaibyo it’s okaaay, we love you Baby you are alright, everyone is safe, Chiyo is on her way and we’ll get you something for the pain can you look at me sweetheart, come on there you are!" - he met Hizashi’s eyes with his own, wincing at the stab from his head - "Ohhhhh there you are Baby, we’ve waited for so long to see you. It was worth the wait, sweet pea, Shou and I have known about you for months. It's okay, don't be frightened, nothing's gonna change…"
He watched as Shouta waved Recovery Girl over with a frantic, yet controlled, gesture. Looking down at the kid clearly in pain, still tangled in the harness and trying to get up, he placed his hands on their shoulders as he kept talking, a veritable flood of words to try to keep them present, and he smiled in relief when the kid managed, "Why are you still being nice?"
He smiled his best hero smile because to let his face fall the way that question made his heart sink would help no one so he said, "Because we love you Kaibyo, as a cat or a kid, Shouta and I love you and nothing you can do will change that."
"Sweetheart," Shout knelt beside them, "Hizashi said it, you’re ours, all our very own, cat or kid you have a place in our hearts and a room in the apartment, and this," he waved to the newly revealed body, "is never gonna change how we feel."
Moving over to let Chiyo in they kept talking, trying to keep the panic at bay until she said, "Okay, you can carry him to the infirmary, I need to get the dirt and debris out of his cuts and scrapes first, then we can do something for the concussion. I know your head hurts Little One, but we need to get you cleaned up first. Now, I’m going to be asking you a few questions as your dads carry you for me, okay?"
Leaning hard into Hizashi as he was carried Izuku did his best with the questions but, well, he never had been able to keep track of things like days of the week and famous political people so he knew he was failing the test, and couldn't help it when he started crying again only to feel marginally better when Shouta said softly, “Hizashi never knows the answers when he gets hit on the head either!”
The squawked "Oi, a little less of the calling out Babe, not nice, not nice at all!" made him sound a bit like a surprised chicken but getting that tiny huff of a laugh was worth anything.
*-*
Helping Chiyo clean all the scrapes and cuts free of dirt and dust and checking him over for any hidden injuries other than the bang to his head, they kept a constant stream of conversation going both to keep him focused and to help keep him calm.
Knowing he was a kid they’d been quietly and patiently paving the way to letting him know they knew but this had blown all that careful prep right out of the water.
Now they were onto damage control so as Izuku yawned and fell fast asleep the instant Recovery Girls quirk hit, they breathed a sigh of relief. Not only would their kid wake pain-free but they now had time to figure out what to do about it all.
******************
In the end, it was both easier and harder than anyone expected, easier because with how chatty Izuku was he had almost an entire year's worth of talking built up and his human form was where he could get some of that out of his system, spending any spare moment asking the teachers all the questions he’d thought of over the time he’d known them.
His room now had not dozens of notebooks but one very high-tech hack-proof notebook tablet that he and Nezu worked on every day as his notes got more and more detailed (and dangerous) and with actual instruction on how to analyze properly Izuku was finally enjoying being human at last.
And sometimes things were harder because some days he spent entirely in cat form, glad that the guilt was gone but the fear of being rejected on those days had every adult in his life simply carrying him around, telling him how much they love him, how amazing he was, how special, how lucky they all were to have him in their lives.
It was working, but as with any trauma, it was a work in progress.
Day by day, week by week, Izuku settled into his new life, coming to believe that his new family not only loved him but would ALWAYS love him, no matter what.
****************
And one day, a few years later, walking into 1A as a hero student (recommended no less) he reconnected with a certain explosive blond who’d gotten the highest number of rescue points any examinee had ever achieved, plus a pretty kick-ass number of villain points.
While it was hardly a match made in heaven, as the rescue heroics team they eventually became after they graduated, they were a formidable force indeed, even if Shouta mourned never having managed to teach Izuku to avoid loud blonds!
